"Then there's the fact that probably about 70% of menu options are grayed out."

Thats because they're Pro features. Common usability sense would say don't display the buttons but marketing would say, no display them so users can see what they're missing out on and have to upgrade. (or some bs along those lines)

Quote :
"Oh and there's the handy "Previous Video"/"Next Video" buttons on a player that doesn't seem to have any playlist functionality. Though, maybe they're just supposed to be "Beginning of Movie"/"End of Movie" buttons, in which case why in the world would you want a button that took you to the very last frame of a video?"

Thats a windows user for you. Creating a playlist of videos in a basic video/audio player (quicktime/WMP) is a feature of Windows Media Player. This is not the case in QT. Its not something you expect if you never use WMP.

In QT each video is independent of the other, you can play as many videos as you can fit on your screen side by side (so long as your computer can handle it). Vs. WMP where you add them to a playlist.

Quote :
"You can't drag a video into an open Quicktime instance. You have to launch it completely as new or from an open prompt (since "New Player" is a Quicktime PRO feature)"

Again, thats because of the lack of 'playlist' concept.

Quote :
"It somehow decided to take over my IE so that now any time I click a link to a PNG, it tries to open the Quicktime browser plugin, locks up the browser and has about a 50/50 shot of outright crashing it.

Of course, there's nowhere to actually remove this association anywhere."

Never heard of that issue before and never experienced it for myself (windows or mac) so I can't comment.

Quote :
"If you have a video full screened, then pause it, about half the time you just lose the slider on the bar. Or if you quit full screen you lose the actual chrome of the player window."

I have no idea what you mean. I don't lose anything switching between fullscreen and windowed. The play bar does, however, fade out after a set time if there is no mouse/keyboard input. Reappears when you move the mouse

Quote :
"quicktime is a needless addition of a player with a godawful UI that breaks OS conventions."

What UI are you referring to? Quicktime looks no different than your standard flash/silverlight video player. It has a minimalistic UI that consists of: Play, rewind, fast forward, volume, timeline, fullscreen, and a 'options' button. (QT X)

Quote :
"The could simply add directshow filters and have .mov and all their other gay formats play in windows media player as well as every other player anyone wanted to write for windows, but they have to be faglords and make their own player instead. By comparision, it would be like getting realplayer for OSX in order to play realplayer files."

Actually by comparison it would be like having to get WMP for Mac (back in the day) or Flip4Mac (current) to play windows media files.

welcome to debating with Golovko... get used to it.

while I agree with you Golovko, none of the reasons you mention are reasons to "get rid of it". Flash still has it's uses like you mentioned.

I literally had to sit and wait for everyone of those sites while I stared at a fancy 'loading...' screen and then I had to watch some stupid page intro while all the elements came flying into view. Yes, yes you are on to something here...this is some really awesome web design. I can't wait for everyone else to adopt.

stop being an asshole, read my edit.

i agree with you, but you can't just say because x & y is true, then z must be true too.

i'm a web designer, so you're preaching to the choir, i don't use flash at all in my sites and if i do it's for interactive pieces or animations, never for site navigation, and intros are evil.

BUT YOU CANNOT say because it shouldn't be used for intros & navigation that it shouldn't be used at all. all you do is post your opinions like their fact and you're a jerk about it.

Well stop being a dick with your personal jabs. If you want to have a discussion then discuss the topic at hand..leave your opinions of me out of it.

I also didn't say get rid of flash, I said it has its uses but those aren't one of them. I also said before that if you don't have flash let the browser decide what plugin the user does have to serve their video (in the case of flash video)

Every site you just posted uses flash as a marketing gimmick. In some cases its useful but it hinders usability.

I know its widely used. Thats not what I was saying. I was commenting on VIDEO uses.

and then someone brought up Navigation and I said that its poor design decisions to use Flash for your navigation but it does have its uses (flash). And as you pointed out, it can be used for marketing.

I'm guessing you are on Quicktime 9.x (i'm assuming X isn't released for PC yet?) because I don't see these next buttons anywhere.

I will agree that pre-X quicktime was complete garbage. But I'm really like X as a basic video player.

the actual standalone player. Both it and itunes ignore things like aero and general windows look and feel concepts.

wmp for mac sure, but flip4mac uses the osx equivilent of directshow filters. Its not a standalone player.

I thought X shipped with iTunes (PC) now? I guess its still Mac only.

Your complaints about QT make sense now, I'm assuming you are also using 7.6.4.

Its both a plugin for Quicktime and has a stand alone player. WMP for mac no longer exists just like IE for Mac so this is its replacement. You actually still download it through MS though.

Quicktime X is 10.6 exclusive. The latest PC and OSX <10.6 version is still the 7.6 series.

According to the flip4mac website the free "player" edition allows playback of wmv through quicktime (via plugin). Thats not anything like quicktime on the pc.

oh here ive got an iphone question

i was skiing with my iphone in my pocket, and i guess my perspiration affected it, and I started getting the "charging is not supported on this device" messages, even though no charger is plugged in. I turned off the phone, and submerged it in a bag of rice over night...there were still messages the next day. did the same thing the next night (last night), and i'm still getting the messages, though less often.

any ideas or is it hosed?

Quicktime for windows is, and always has been, a piece of shit. It's a disgrace that Apple let that product out its doors. That said...

Quote :
"At this point the international symbol for "Next" is a button that either looks like >| or >>| except in Quicktime when it uh... takes you to the last frame of a video?
"

To be fair, that symbol actually means take me to the end (and its reverse, take me to the beginning), that just happens to effectively move you to the next item if there is another, hence the association with "Next"

Quote :
"Uh... no. If you have WMP or VLC or any other player open and drag a video into that player window, it starts playing immediately. It has nothing to do with a playlist.
"

This is an apple convention that shouldn't have carried over to windows. On a mac, the convention is that the window is the movie. Remember that the menu bar on a mac is detached from the window, so dragging a movie file onto another movie's window has no real meaning. So on a mac, quicktime player is the application, and the window is the movie, under windows, the window is Windows Media Player and the playback section is the movie. The convention should not have been carried over, but Apple's windows software has always sucked.

The reason why I brought up Adobe Flash wasn't so I could watch Hulu videos on my iPhone for free (although that would be nice) but rather there are sites that I access frequently, even my dentists' site) that are severely gimped due to no flash support. Also with adobe flash (if I am understanding correctly) I could stream things like audio broadcasts from nhl.com as well as Brad & Britt in the morning since they both have their own pop up window to play instead of utilizing something like Real Player or Quicktime.

^yes, that, sites like dentists, my employer's site, LOTS of clothing/accessory/gear/etc manufacturers. that last one is the problem i run into the most w/ not having flash. when i'm out shopping, i like to know how many other colors/sizes/shapes/types of whatever it is i'm looking at comes in.

yeah not having flash on the iphone is a big issue. I'm not saying it should get flash per say. I'm simply saying it's a big let down when i really need to go to a site on my iphone and once it loads all there is is the little flash symbol.

This is why i will NOT be buying iPhone. Even though I would likely not use such applications, the intent is enough to disway me from purchasing. If it is the "children" that people are worried about than what about not buying your kid a fucking iPhone or creating parental controls.

Quote :
" I have spoken with Apple, and the following are the new rules:

1. No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)

2. No images of men in bikinis! (I didn’t ask about Ice Skating tights for men)

3. No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)

4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes – I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic)

5. No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned

6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing!! (I doubt many people could get aroused with the pic above but those puritanical guys at Apple must get off on pretty mundane things to find Wobble "overtly sexual!")

7. No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but …) "

What is the next step, the iPhone is going to proxy block access to any risque' websites from being accessed while online???

I think they're doing all the pervs a huge favor and preventing them from wasting their money.

Just read the comments in any one of those 'boobs' apps and see for yourself.

Hell, I've given some thought to creating one of these lame apps, publishing it under an alias, and putting boobs in the title. Charge $0.99 = $profit!

Quick question:

A buddy of mine wants to sell me his 1st gen iphone. If my current provider is already at&t, is it as simple as upgrading my plan online and place in my old sim card? I won't be using the 3G network so I don't have to get it activated in store.

Do you already have any sort of data plan on your current service? I wouldn't let AT&T know you plan on using an iPhone unless you just really feel like paying $30 more per month or you think you're gonna use a lot of data. If you don't plan on using it a lot, especially since you aren't on 3G, you might be better off not officially upgrading your plan and just swapping out your SIM.

I don't have a data plan with At&t for my current phone. But if I'm going to get a plan to use for the iphone I'll probably use it quite frequently. I've also seen 1st gen iphones that have SMS text messaging or is that something available for jail-broken versions?

Basically what I'm trying to do is buy the phone, upgrade my plan online, and use all the features that the iphone offers without at&t knowing that I have one.

Anyone on here have a 2G iphone. I'm trying to get my picture MMS working. I added a source from http://cydia.ifoneguide.nl and then downloaded "Native MMS iPhone 2G" app from Cydia. everything seemed to have installed fine but I don't have a "cellular data" tab in which I can put my carrier information.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
