yeah, not sure on that yet. my truck only has liability. however, i have a renter's policy to cover me while I'm in the hotel. I asked to make sure it would cover the contents of my trailer (in addition to obviously the stuff in my hotel room), but I didn't think to ask if it would cover the stuff in my truck. I mean, it would seem to me that it should, and it's USAA so they're usually pretty reasonable, but you never know.

Even if I don't lose a dollar on the deal, it still absolutely fucking infuriates me. I had pretty minimal faith in humanity, anyway, but there went another piece of what little I had left.

I'm sorry to hear your loss! Today my faith was slightly restored. I had parallel parked my car and when I returned, there was a note on my windshield. A guy left it with his phone number stating that he backed into my car and wanted to make sure that he paid for any damages he may have caused. I don't see any damage at all, but I sure as hell was impressed someone went this far to make sure everything is okay. Might reward his honesty/respect with a free lunch at cookout or something.

Was the truck broken in while it was at the hotel? Perhaps the thief was caught on camera?

yeah, in the hotel parking lot. i told the staff at the front desk. they didn't mention anything about surveillance cams. I can ask about that, though. it could have been any time in the last 2-3 weeks, though...i haven't driven the truck in a while.

i was just there a couple years ago... my 1911 and 44 mag were stolen out of my truck. (luckily the morons didn't look in the back seat, it was hunting season and i had a 12ga, Winchester mod 70 and a 30-30 back there under my coveralls) my 1911 was recovered a couple months later and i'm just now getting it back. fought with insurance for over a year, finally ended up buying it back at auction.

That's not excessive.
I've been down range putting up a target with some fucktard screwing around with his rifle pointed right at me. I didn't know what he was doing but I didn't care. Having a gun pointed at you with someone manipulating it is never a good feeling.

No messing with mags/ammo while cold is good because you never know what someone stupid is doing. It's a hell of a lot easier to not touch anything than to have to watch your back and worry about retards constantly.

IMO if you can't handle these simple safety rules for a couple of minutes then you need to learn a little bit of patience.

it's for loading guns. you can load mags whenever. you can show up with all your mags already loaded as long as they're out of the gun.

the "inspection" is really just a glance. they just don't want you bringing anything illegal in there. if you brought some dilapidated looking piece of shit, they might take a closer look to make sure it appears safe. i'm cool with that.

at any rate, i'm sure glad folks who don't like these rules can find somewhere else to go shoot.

these rules sound similar to the rules at the Wake County range, and the range officers there are fucktards with regards to the rules. I had a glock with the clip removed and the slide locked back in my hand while packing up at the wake county range when they sounded the range cold signal. As I stuck the gun back into my holster with the slide still locked back literally one second after the siren, the range officer grabbed my hand and yelled at me "RANGE COLD!!! YOU CAN"T TOUCH A FIREARM!" while he proceeds to put the gun on the table facing right back at us. While he continues to be an ignorant douchebag ranting about the dangers of an unloaded firearm, another range officer runs over, grabs the gun that's now facing up, points it downrange like it should have been, and then starts yelling at both of us about why the gun was facing people. The two range officers proceed to get into an argument about why I got stopped in the first place vs. why a gun was facing a room full of people.

I personally don't like the idea that I can only pack up and go home after the range has gone hot again, and that's what these rules force you to do.

I don't own any guns, but I'm having a little girl in a few months, and that has to change. What do I need to do to get a handgun? I'd eventually want to look at getting my carry/conceal, but i hear there is MORE liability with that... is it really necessary? (i mean i wouldn't be able to carry daily... i work at a school, then i go to the Y, and then sometimes I go to a bar... any of those places guns are off limits )

To find out how to get a handgun you can search google, which will point you to the sherriff's website. Basically you go to their office, fill out the form, wait, go back and pick up the permit (costs a couple bucks, go ahead and get a few so you don't have to do it again), bring the purchasing permit to a gun store, find the gun you want, fill out another form and give the permit to the salesman, shell out $3-600 for your gun, walk out with the gun, stop by Walmart and buy a $30 digital keypad lock box from the office supplies plus some ammo, break free CLP, hoppes #9, and a basic cleaning rod with brushes, go home, get back on google and look up how to clean whatever gun you bought, clean said gun, and lastly bring the clean gun and ammo to the range for some practice.

A concealed handgun permit (CHP) is only necessary if you actually plan on concealing a handgun off of your own property. The only other reason to get one is if you want to do away with having to apply for purchasing permits as the CHP can take the place of a purchasing permit.

For home defense only, a shotgun is the way to go. A good pump action 12 gauge can be had for ~$200*. The difficulty will be finding a place to go shoot/practice, unless you have access to private land that's safe to shoot.

I don't have any serial numbers written down anywhere. The Rem 700 was bought at Dick's sporting goods about 15 years ago. The Saiga was from Fuquay Gun about a year ago...I might call up Clay and see if they happen to maintain any record of stuff like that.

lesson learned: I guess I'll record the serial #s of all my guns. Of course, once I move into my house, I'm going to get a safe, anyway.

also, a rider on your homeowner's/renter's insurance to cover guns is very cheap and it'll cover the gun in fire, theft (no matter where it's stolen from), and everything else. even covers damages to the gun if you were to drop it out of a deer stand or something (there's a deductible, of course).

Keep in mind, in NC renters or homeowners will only pay out 10% of the total coverage amount toward guns. So you think you're covered for 15k but really only 1500

it was pretty affordable through Farm Bureau for me.

i scheduled them for enough to replace them with accessories, scopes, etc. and then when they were stolen they just paid me exactly what i had them scheduled for. when they were recovered, i just paid them back what they paid me for the ones i actually wanted back.

speakin of shotguns, I've been hellbent on a rem 870 police for a while but I came across the H&R Pardner 12ga (870 clone), and everything I've read has been positive...i.e. no frills, ugly as sin and built like a tank. And less than half the cost. Anyone have any experience with these? Of course I'd love a saiga 12 but in the meantime I need a workin' man's 12ga around the house

I picked up a Maverick 88 (similar to Mossberg 500) as a general use 12 ga to keep around the house and on the tractor when I'm on the farm. I was looking for a no frills shotgun that would still be reliable. I Have shot 3" buckshot and plenty of 2 3/4" birdshot through it with no problems, and have no complaints other than the rattle of the for-end (more noise than my 20 ga. 870) .

While at the store I asked to hold the Pardner Pump, and I was told that the only one they had in stock was defective and that they wouldn't even let me hold it. I went ahead and got the Maverick, and has proved to be a decent shotgun. With a 28" barrel and the mossberg accuchoke, it can do anything you want in the field. I'm sure that the available defense model with the 18.5" barrel would function just as well as mine has. I have also come to prefer the safety location/cycle lever more-so than the remington 870.

What about carrying a gun in your car? what is legal/not legal? I would assume it would be considered concealed if it was out of sight... what about in the trunk?

My buddy has one and I've shot it multiple times. It always went bang. You're right about the fit and finish though, it's quite a ways from that of the 870 But it'll get the job done. My Mossberg is kinda the same way.

It's my understanding that as long as your firearm is not accessible or within reach, you are good to go. So if you do not have a C/C, behind the seat, under the seat, in glove box etc is a no no. Better be safe and keep it in the trunk, truck box or hatch of your vehicle. If a police officer stops you, you don't have to immediately tell him that you have a firearm in your car unless he asks.

YMMV, but this has been my experience.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up, I'll check one out. I've never been taken with mossberg, but I've never owned one so I have almost no real reason other than the feeling I get when holding one in a shop. The plastic trigger guard just irks me for some reason, more than it should. Makes me think that if they'd cheap out on that, they'd cut corners elsewhere. Definitely open-minded about them though

I bought my mom mid-80's model marlin 30-30 last year, and in the time it took me to get her surprise to her, her partner went out and got a new 336. I had fallen in love with the one I got her and almost decided to get her something else, but given where they live (middle of nowhere, virtually no law enforcement presence) I felt more comfortable having two lethal rifles around.

Within 10 seconds of holding the new one, I decided I didn't like it. Furniture felt and looked cheap, had plastic on it where it shouldn't have, didn't even like the sights on it. I, of course, kept this to myself as they were proud of it but my mom still takes me aside when I go home to tell me that she likes the older one MUCH better. The new one shoots well enough, but for whatever reason I shoot better with the older one. At the end of the day they're both fine rifles but compared to each other there's just something missing from the modern 336

You'll spend about an hour going over handgun safety, 3-4 hours going over legalities (including home protection, and open/conceal carry), and then the remainder of the class going over handgun fundamentals and operation as well as cleaning and maintenance.

For carrying in a car, a handgun would be considered concealed if it is easily accessible and concealed from view. The Attorney General has determined a locked glovebox or console would not be considered concealed as long as the key is not in the locking mechanism. As long as the gun is not within reach of any passengers in the vehicle, it would also not be considered concealed.

^^ I like my Mossberg just fine. I really don't notice the plastic trigger guard at all. It's your run of the mill Sporting Mossberg 500 with 24 inch barrel. I have an 18 inch barrel that I keep on it most of the time unless I'm shooting skeet and random clays. The build and finish is better than the H&R and a tad below the 870 (There is some play when you move the forend from side to side that's it), I'd bet my life on that thing firing every time though.

compactness for HD, 14+1 rounds with no external mag. The saiga is long and tall (unless you put a drum on it), and while the semi-auto option is a game-changer i feel like the dimensions might become a liability in a HD situation

don't get me wrong, I'm sure I'd be happy with either. can the saiga shoot 3" shells? the KSG only chambers 2 3/4"
