As a developer, I would never use an excuse that piss poor. If the OS gives you the ability to 'pause/resume' your app you should take full advantage of it and leave the whining of multitasking to the users. If you don't know what you're doing you have no business getting apps to market. Between Push and 'pause/resume' it mimics multitasking to a degree except when it comes to apps like Pandora/radio which is really the only good use of multitasking on such a device.
I cant view apps/content side by side. Even if I could I wouldn't want to because the screen is small enough for one window at a time. That leaves us with audio. If audio apps could run in the background much like the iPod app then thats all that is really needed for multitasking. Push/'pause resume' takes care of everything else.

^what other apps besides audio apps will you benefit from with multitasking that 'pause/resume'/push doesn't already address?
and location service apps just drain the battery plus there are apps that update your location without the app running...so thats not it.

When you can link something from apple.com on OS 4.0 then we'll talk. Until then its all just speculation and rumors.

I'm actually with Golovko on this to a certain extent. The problem with your game not saving state is ultimately the developer's issue, not Apple's.
Like, it'd be nice if Apple's OS supported multi-tasking, but it's been 3 years and it hasn't changed, so if you're the developer, you need to fix it. 3/16/2010 1:56:11 PM |

^thats what I'm saying. If you are going to develop for a certain platform, know how it works and develop features accordingly.
Let the users bitch about the lack of multitasking.

I mean i use backgrounder/multitasking daily for pandora, games, GPS app if I'm in my car (takes too long to load if i completely shut it down, my run-meter app for workouts, logmein, and various other apps that take too long to load/or don't save your settings on close.
How many of you actually use multitasking on the iPhone regularly so you have the legitimate experience to criticize/praise it?

forget the game, it's just a pain in the ass to have to find/re-open up apps after getting a call...or after wanting to jump to another application do something quick (send text, update status etc). i can only imagine how much of a pain in the ass that would be if I wanted to use my iPhone for turn-by turn (like the droid does). like i said before, this thing is just a collection of applications, and it's starting to get on my nerves. if 4.o fixes it, then that'll be great. if not i might have to jump ship
i dont know about the droid, but on the Pre you can cycle through your running app windows with a swipe, just like you swipe through Safari windows on the iPhone. If you don't see then value in that outside of pandora and audio apps then i can't help you with that.3/16/2010 2:27:41 PM |

Can't swipe between applications in Android because Android has support for multiple screens in an instance of an application. Can hold down the Home button and get a pop-up task switcher, though. It even includes apps you've recently closed. 3/16/2010 2:30:17 PM |

I found a jailbreak app that does almost exactly that for the iPhone. Swipe your finger and it shows all running apps and lets you switch to them or close them.3/16/2010 2:46:59 PM |

^ multi-tasking is pretty much exactly like apple from what I read. Native apps have background / push but developers have no access to it "for the time being". Supposedly they may eventually open it up but that's a big if. Did I miss something? 3/16/2010 6:31:12 PM |

Actually the way that MS is handling multitasking is exactly what you were talking about on the top of the page. Rather than having a Pandora app, Last.FM app, etc, all of them plug into a Music hub. That music hub can then run in the background.3/16/2010 7:25:52 PM |

kinda possible with "Notifier" with jailbreak. it puts a notification icon in the title bar next to the battery icon for each different type of notification.

exists with a jailbreak through "QuickScroll 2", nothing through the app store tho.
i'm really liking Circuitous app manager for backgrounder, get a nice little popout dock showing all of your backgrounded apps.

That's not how it is all the time. The side bar pops in and out, and in regard to the background image that's just personal preference. In no way is it ugly or unusable. I've seen far worse UI's on android phones or some jailbroken iPhones. I don't see how a background can ruin a UI unless it completely prevents you from seeing the icons. I for one got really tired of the black background. The iPhone UI hasn't changed in years. It's boring and bland.

This is something I disagree on. A background image (photo not solid color/gradient) makes the home screen look cluttered and unusable. You have too many color variations in the image that it makes it harder to quickly and easily recognize icons. The example above makes it near impossible to read some of the icon labels because the text is almost the same color as the background.
A background image works for desktops because the primary method of running apps isn't distracted by the image. (Start menu in windows or the dock/finder in Mac OS X).
In reference to the side bar for background apps, that is a poor implementation for a UI. A better UI would have been to slide down (out of view) the 4 icon tray and slide up (into view) the background apps tray.

You can change the font/color/highlighting of the fonts to make them fit, or just turn off the text like i did. I know what the icons are, so I don't need the words.
Anyway it all comes down to personal preference. If you like looking at a black background each day then to each his own. I personally got bored of it and like having a background. It doesn't make it unusable for ME and that's what matters. Plus everyone who sees my phone loves the background and theme.3/17/2010 12:25:31 PM |

So I just dropped my iPhone and the screen is pretty busted. It doesn't look like the glass is cracked, but the LCD is pretty messed up. I vaguely remember somebody on here saying they fixed iPhone screens (and searched but couldn't find it) do they/you fix the glass or the LCD?
