The 17-85 is a soft lens and doesn't offer the lens resolution unlike the 70-200 that you have. The 17-40 will have improved optics and better image performance than the 17-85 as well as a constant f/4 aperture. If you are shooting on a cropped sensor I honestly wouldn't advised in the 17-40. Look at 3rd party glass such as sigma and tonika as they have similar zoom ranges for cheap.

For a cropped sensor for canon, look at the 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens, basically its the 24-70 L lens for cropped sensors and has IS! But it also costs a cool grand. If you want something on the cheap, tonika has the 16-50 f/2.8, but look at reviews for it, I don't know anyone who has shot with it before. Tonika and Sigma wide angle zooms are pretty decent for half the price, but both of them don't have the build quality like the 17-40 L or any L lens for Canon.

If I still shot mainly on a 1.6cf body, I'd definitely would look at sigma and tonika offers first. Shit, if I was doing a lot of travel photography for myself, I'd look at the super zooms like the 18-200's just to save weight and/or to be lazy (which isn't a bad thing, specially if you just need something better than a p&s, but don't want to carry 50lbs worth of camera stuff on trips). Even the super zooms offer pretty decent glass for what they are. Would I use it for professional job? no, but if I'm just capturing the moment on a hike among family, I'd use it and make some small prints or something.

Cody, if it's the wireless, I <b>think</b> you can set the shutter to bulb and hold down the release. I've got both the cable and the wireless remote, and the cable works better for me.

i guess i'll go ahead and be the first one to post July 4th pictures... i'm sure everyone has some. i ended up getting a cable release instead of trying to shoot with the remote; it was an excellent decision as the thing was super easy to use. for my first fireworks shoot, i was decently pleased with the results. i wish i could see more foreground, though.

I straight up forgot to pack my tripod, so I stuck with shorter long exposures and hoped for the best. these are from the fireworks show at lake Norman. From my dock I could see about 5 or 6 different places shooting them off. I've never seen so many boats on the lake at once. Working on stitching a panorama.

No, just straight up handheld, manual focus, 2", f/16 for most. The keeper rate was low . I was propping the camera up when I could for other stuff. I've been poking around on flickr and I've seen some nice faster shutter pictures - but generally at nicer fireworks shows.

cool man. that's impressive stuff for a 2" hand held shutter! i think i shot most, if not all, of my shots around f/11. since i had a tripod, i just left it on ISO100 and used the cable release on bulb setting for the shutter.

It's actually the novatron 240 and it has a slave already I just need something to trigger it. I have a d40 so the on camera flash will not work, sadly. Someone said I could get a sb600 and a slave??

Oh god, you got me started on a big rant in there... lol I showed some of those sites to my wedding/portrait instructor and man, he was grinning and grunting at most of the shots that he looked at with disgust. Then got like a 90 minute speech of what they did wrong or failed to look for.

If the strobes are capable of serving as an optical slave then you can trigger it with any flash as long as it is nearby and in the line of sight. This can be tricky and very limiting. If the strobes do not have this capability then you need to invest in some pc cables and jacks, or some radio or ir triggers. The transmitter doesn't work if there is nothing to transmit to, by the way (read: receiver). Do a little bit of research on your gear and figure out what it can/cannot do.

What? What are you trying to say? A slave is a mode that the strobe functions in, and is called a slave when it is operating as such. Are you trying to say that it has the ability to function as an optical slave, or what? Do you even know?

Well it has an infrared receiver. The sb800 can trigger the strobes wirelessly. I was told the sb600 cannot unless it has SOMETHING else but I can't remember what. I was also told, or read rather, that only the d70 and d200 can trigger the strobes with the on camera flash. I have the d40.

Someone in the strobist flickr group said I could buy a cybersync which I put on my hotshoe to trigger them.

The link you posted above is a radio transmitter, dear. That will do you no good if your flash has an ir receiver. The sb600 cannot act as a master, the sb800 can.

This isn't that difficult. Google would solve all of your problems, as well as reading your user manuals.

what are you shooting? a cable could be the easiest solution.
you can use a pc sync cable, but the d40 doesnt have a pc jack, so you'll need a hotshoe adapter. Everything you need to know about this is on Strobist.

or you could buy an optical trigger that will trigger the strobe when it sees a flash. as long as you can disable preflash (redeye) you'll only need the receiver. these can plug into a jack on the strobe, or act as a hotshoe.

From what I've read and have been told it sounded like all I needed was the radio transmitter since there's a receiver on the power box that the strobes are plugged into. Do I need to get a receiver as well??

I was hoping I could avoid a cable so there would be less chance of tripping, getting tangled, etc.

So crap, does anyone know if the novatron 240 can receive radio signal? I know it has an ir receiver but don't know otherwise... I'll google it. But it sounds like the optical trigger is my best bet??

It's that but the older version and it has an infrared receiver for sure. I used the sb800 without problem but I dont have that flash anymore so I'm looking for an alternative.

It looks like this except where the chord is plugged in is an infrared receiver, I don't think it can be removed.

that CORD with the coils is a pc-to-household CORD.

the thing you posted two posts up is an optical trigger that IS a hotshoe, so hotshoe flashes go on it, and it is the receiver, it catches the flash. you ought to be able to use your pop up flash to trigger it. but it has the same drawbacks that Ronny mentioned for IR - it has to be able to see the flash.

It seems to be the cheapest most reliable option at this point. Is it right?

I am borrowing a small studio set up to play around with. A friend is letting me shoot her this Friday but the person I am borrowing the sb800 from needed it at the same time. So I was looking for a cheap option I can use in the mean time to play around and LEARN lighting because it's important.

Oh and I have a slave, an infrared one, I just need a trigger!! So I'm opting for the cable at this point even though it's not wireless like I had hoped it is reliable and cheap.

What you see there is a cross-section of an "optoelectronic" fiber. It's a light-sensing strand MIT is developing that it says could capture an image. Led by Associate Professor Yoel Fink of MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the research is still far from yielding any real-world applications, but the project just hit a milestone, namely using the fabric to take a rough snap of a smiley face.

In the future, the group can see the fibers used in multiple ways, including being weaved into a soldier's garment. Since the fibers can capture an image, he could observe his surroundings through a heads-up camera feed instead of having to swivel around.

The fibers also one-up cameras as they have the potential to be far more durable. "We are saying, 'instead of a tiny, sensitive object [for capturing images], let's construct a large, distributed system,'" Fink told MIT News, "While the current version of these fabrics can only image nearby objects, it can still see much farther than most shirts can."

Well, sci-fi-ish project or not, he's got a point there.
