Is it lost on them that Valvano was a mid major hire? This is the 2nd time they've insisted on jumping straight to a #1 coach and caused us to look like a joke. 4/5/2011 10:27:28 AM |

i was just curious so i did a little research about the last 20 or so NCAA Championship games.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Men's_Division_I_Basketball_Champions
The thing that sticks out about 95% of the coaches who have coached in the national title game in basketball, for the last 20+ years roughly, is they all came with pedigrees; i.e. they learned under legendary coaches or were themselves legendary coaches. It's possible Brad Stevens will go down as a legendary coach, but even if he does, his path to coaching, with no pedigree, is rare to non-existent that it be duplicated again.
I'm thinking we should go after a really good assistant somewhere whose a great recruiter and is just biding his time to take over a program.

yea, we need an assistant from a good pedigree, and hope he's as good as or better than who he learned from. hiring an entrenched a-lister is not the norm, and is probably only going to happen at far more appealing schools than ours.

Geno is 57, Italian, and has coached one of the most impressive dynasties in sports.
How many people can compete with that?
His guaranteed salary is $988,000...so if we offered 2.5 mil or something like that long-term, maybe he'd jump for the men's league.... 4/5/2011 10:42:12 AM |

Smart would have been a short term boost to the program that would have been nice but ultimately fizzeled... he knew that and that he would be canned in 5 years.

I don't think that.
First of all, I don't think there were a lot of good choices. There haven't been any coaching moves where you immediately thought, "Damn that's a good hire." I mean, Smart was the "best" candidate many thought likely to move and he just emerged about a month ago.
We assumed she tried with Miller (somebody with ties and who expressed a previous desire to come here) which wasn't completely out of nowhere. Who else do we know she targeted besides Smart? The Donovan/Barnes talk has been all rumor and no confirmation from either side that there were even talks. And you can be mad about not hiring Marshall all you want, but Yow likely saw he was not worth the money needed to get him here so she passed.
She can't just make up a good available coach out of nowhere. I think she looked at the most likely of A coach candidates, moved to the hottest B candidate, and now has to look to assistants. It's really not all that bad, in my opinion. We could get a really good coach without locking in a ridiculous 10 year 20 million dollar deal or whatever numbers have been thrown around.4/5/2011 10:54:47 AM |

Let me tell you how the Smart deal went down. He knew what VCU would be able to do money-wise. He told State what it would take to get him to Raleigh and we weren't willing to pay it. Simple as that.
If I was Smart, and I knew VCU could pay me $1.2m, I would ask for at least $2m from State. And he's not worth $2m.4/5/2011 11:02:00 AM |

From ESPN.Com Rumors:
Quote : | "Where NC State turns now 9:31 AM ETNorth Carolina State Wolfpack TopEmailComments1NC State's coaching search took a hit on Monday. Actually, it took three; VCU's Shaka Smart, Wichita State's Gregg Marshall and Cincinnati's Mick Cronin all were eliminated from the mix. In one day, the three perceived leading candidates for the Wolfpack job elected to stay at their current schools. Smart and Cronin signed new deals, while Marshall reportedly passed up a $1.9 million offer to remain at Wichita State for a base salary of $800,000 a season.
This comes after other top candidates, like Richmond's Chris Mooney, also passed on the job.
Where will NC State turn now? According to CoachingNewsOnline.com, three remaining possibilities include St. Mary's coach Randy Bennett, BYU coach Dave Rose and Texas A&M's Mark Turgeon.
Bennett reportedly turned down the Utah job, is happy at St. Mary's and is a West coast guy. But he's also a hot name who has done a fantastic job in 10 seasons with the Gaels. While money could make the different, we still have our doubts that this is the job he'd leave Moraga for.
Rose seems to be firmly entrenched at BYU and is reportedly in talks to get a raise to his current contract. His name has already been mentioned in many other places, like Oklahoma, and if he didn't take those offers it's hard to imagine him leaving the Cougars for this job.
Turgeon has already reportedly turned down NC State, but some believe the Aggies coach would reconsider if presented with the right contract offer.

seriously, funk all that. like i've said before, if we're offering $ and the coach still stays back, its ok if its because he and his family like their current situation.. and if he thinks our desire to be great is unrealistic, then he's entitled to weigh his current situation and hedge his testicular and intestinal fortitude accordingly.
..but if he's even the slightest bit hesitant to compete in this neighborhood, we don't need his bitchass.
a couple of weeks ago i had the pleasure of sitting across from Pete Brennan in a business meeting. he showed me his National Championship ring as well as his NC MVP ring: http://www.lib.unc.edu/ncc/mcguire/index.html
we talked shop for about 20 minutes, and spent the rest of the hour talking about ACC tradition. he brought up that State fans should indeed desire to be great again. according to him, State is the main reason the ACC was founded and gained early prominence.
State bball hasn't been worth half a damn during most young people's lives, but if you ever get a chance to talk an old-timer, you'll see why many fans rightfully yearn for a return to greatness.
i've been a State fan since 1983. i moved to the US from India in 1986. i also have 3 degrees from this here State college. you've heard of 'die-hard fans' -- well i am a 'die-never fan', so take my rants and unending optimism with a barrel of salt.
maybe playing third fiddle on Tobacco Road is "realistic". maybe bowing our heads to our less masculine overlords in blue clothing is "realistic". maybe accepting a life at a lower level on the caste system is "realistic".. but if all that is "realistic", then color me red and crown me king of the lunatic fringe, because i think its realistic to compete regularly in our neighborhood, and once in while make a splash on the national scene.4/5/2011 11:08:39 AM |

No, $2M really should be the limit for most anyone to come here.
I'm not so sure he turned it down either, but I wouldn't be shocked. In all honesty this is a tough situation to walk into, and it has nothing to do with Duke and UNC. If we paid someone $2M, we'd expect results. Fast. Making off with $1M in a place where winning the NIT makes you God doesn't seem so bad. Probably Shaka's thinking as well.
