I hadn't realized how irrelevant we had become. The media constantly harping on how horrible our fans are or how the coaching position isn't that great doesn't help.
I live in KY and guys I work with are all HUGE Louisville fans. I was talking about getting turned down by Smart for half pay to stay at VCU and he says "well, no offense, but he is probably waiting for a better job than State. I couldn't really picture a great coach or flavor of the month picking it as their destination."

Smart and Marshall are fools. You win at VCU or Wichita State, you're a local celebrity who gets a free county club membership and comped meals at Applebee's. You win at NC State, you're a fucking rock star. These guys just don't thin the juice is worth the squeeze. 4/5/2011 11:24:06 AM |

Whoa, no. Not what I said at all.
Here's the reason why we're swinging and missing on coaches:
Great Good <-- fans think we're here Mediocre Awful <-- we're here
We can't get good before we're mediocre. And we're definitely not mediocre. Your definition may vary, but most people say Herb was mediocre. And he was getting 9 or 10 wins regularly during the last five years of his tenure.
Do I think someone like Marshall could get us to mediocre? Definitely. Do I think $2M is high? Yes. But is it the reality we're facing? Possibly. Keep in mind that coaches salaries are going way up. There's no way we could've gotten anybody for less than $1M. So make that your baseline. Marshall was already making that. Then you're asking him to walk away from $1M per in a situation where he can do no wrong for our pressure cooker. Pretty soon you're getting up to that $2M figure.
I don't know exactly why he turned us down or what all happened. But I think $2M for a consistent level of 9-10+ wins every year is probably the best we can hope for. But paying significantly beyond that is just crazy unless it's someone REALLY good. Which we're not getting.

i still say we should hire steve fisher. he is a very capable coach whose only real downside is his age. i think he can come here for 5 or so years and win some games, make a good run in the tournament, and then if he retires when we repeat this process we will have a much better shot at getting an upper tier coach 4/5/2011 11:28:03 AM |

Fuck Herb, why is he in any way relevant to a 2011 coaching search discussion?
Our players are mediocre? Our facilities? Our fan base? Our conference? What are you even talking about? College basketball doesn't take a 10 year process to be good. It takes a good coach and a few recruiting classes, if that. It's not like our players right now are all that terrible either. We have a number of young players with a lot of potential.
If you think it takes 2 million dollars to go from where we are now to mediocre in your arbitrary scale of great/good/mediocre/awful, then you're dumb4/5/2011 11:34:19 AM |

Dear Wolfpack Family,?
I am writing to share with you the status of the search for our new head coach for men's basketball. There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings -- sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is.
The conversations have been candid. We have not tried to sugarcoat the challenge of rebuilding our basketball program. Our absence for 5 consecutive years from the NCAA Tournament was noted by each coach as evidence that the program is in poor shape and will require a special effort to rebuild.
?Finding a coach with the fight and fire to do this job has been a challenge. That said, we will find an excellent college coach who shares the vision of what State Basketball can become and is up for the challenge.
I realize there are multiple rumors surfacing about the nature of the search on websites and in newspapers. Once our new coach is hired, I will be in a position to bring perspective to a number of those rumors. But, right now, we need to remain focused on finding a talented collegiate coach who is a fighter, full of confidence and appreciation for the opportunity to lead our basketball program back to national prominence.
?That will happen in spite of those who believe this cannot occur.
?Wolfpack Basketball is destined for a revival. We will accept no less. Please keep the faith while we continue the search. Your emails and text messages of support have meant everything to me. I am blessed to be your AD.
?In the Spirit of the Pack,?
Debbie

Calm down, not trying to start a fight.
Maybe it's just different definitions of mediocre. Are you calling where we are right now mediocre? I call it awful. Do you call where Herb had us good or mediocre? I call it mediocre.
But right now, you have to admit. Herb-style mediocrity would be a major step up right now. No one is going to take this job seriously when you have fans thinking we can go from averaging 5 conference wins per year to top of the heap in no time.
And I've got news for you, the more the $2M figure gets kicked around in the media, the more coaches are going to expect something near it. 4/5/2011 11:37:00 AM |

I'm always reminded how irrelevant we really are when my family comes to visit from up North, and makes a comment like, "That really stinks you guys got knocked out of the tournament, you were close to the final 4!"
And I'm like... that's not the school I went to.
We really need to get this thing wrapped up, just get someone young and energetic that can keep our current recruits/players and go from there. At this point I'd rather take a shot at a complete unknown/random type coach that could turn out to be a home run than some mid tier guy who has been around with some success but never really gotten over the hump and will just perpetuate the mediocrity. 4/5/2011 11:38:09 AM |

I was telling my gf last night about NC State's history. How we were the frontrunners of the great ACC when it started and we were one of the first schools with multiple championships...yadda yadda yadda. She asked me when we won those championships and I told her back in '74 and '83. And she was responded with..."that's a really long time ago."
She doesn't know shit about sports, but she's right. Nobody gives a fuck about NC State anymore. We just need to find somebody who can coach...I don't care if it's an assistant somewhere. We're irrelevant in college basketball right now and we can pretty much just hope to get lucky. 4/5/2011 11:39:22 AM |

K is a great, great coach. Second best ever if you ask me, behind Wooden. That said, he has a flat awful track record of producing quality head coaches from his tree. Mike Brey is far and away the best.
Shit, Dawkins, who everyone thought was cant miss is gonna get canned after next year likely.
No thanks to any of his assistants. If we hire one of them there is ZERO reason why we didnt hire Archie.
