^^^ dont get ahead of yourself. we won because we had a size advantage. That helped us get some easy inside shots and some good kick outs.
most teams we play will be bigger than us. i think you'll see this pattern throughout the year. if team is bigger than us, we lose.

We didn't win because we were bigger. We won because we actually played good defense and had multiple ball handlers at all times. A lot of people brought their A games today. No one played poorly. I was able to watch all of the second half and saw a more athletic team than we've had in Raleigh in well... a LONG time. 12/5/2009 10:49:12 PM |

I liked Sid's decision to tell the team to shoot 20/28 in the 2nd half (he def should have done that against nw). But i was really questioning his decision to only allow the team 10/28 in the 1st. 12/5/2009 10:56:14 PM |

CJ Williams and Julius Mays are still playing poorly to me.
I don't know if its sophomore jinx or what but if those two would help would be great.
Great win today....after the halftime score don't think anyone expected that. Javi has made great strides.12/6/2009 1:28:59 AM |

CJ Williams was 3/5 and played solid D while in the game. 7 points isn't bad.
Mays had a poor shooting night, but had 3 assists to no turnovers, was in the game as a part of a something like 12-2 State run early in the 2nd half, and even hit the 3 to give us the lead.
They aren't playing like superstars, but they didn't have bad games overall. We'd want more scoring from CJ, but I'm not complaining when Horner, Javi, and Davis stepped up to take some of the scoring load off Tracy. 12/6/2009 2:10:39 AM |

I dont get why CJ thinks he's Josh Davis. He should be taking more than 5 shots a game. I heard he did well in the NC Pro-Am which had former/current NBA players, John Wall, Ed Davis, etc playing in it. So why the fuck is he invisible in college? 12/6/2009 2:42:23 AM |

Mays has been extremely disappointing so far this season, at least he didn't turn it over though. Josh Davis had a monster game, if he can improve his shot and get some post moves he will be extremely effective. Degand played some very solid minutes tonight, and was actually able to finish...we're going to need good minutes from him if Mays doesn't break out of his slump.12/7/2009 1:40:45 PM |

Except for the fact that he didn't. He had the one good game against Maryland at the very end of the season, but didn't play in the 6 previous games.
In fact, if you exclude the Maryland game, Mays played a grand total of 1 minute during our last 8 games last year.
Don't feel bad about messing that one up though, Lowe did the very same thing at the end of last year.

Still, right now, we need Mays. I'm sure if we go back, some of the same people who are praising Javi and Degand after this totally awesome marquette game were probably saying the same type of things about them that they're saying about Mays right now. I think Mays is going to be a solid back-up. He's definitely struggling so far this season, but his performance in the marquette game wasn't terrible. 12/7/2009 3:20:25 PM |

My main issue with Mays so far is he just looks so slow defensively compared to Javi, and for Marquette, Degand.
It's almost irritating to watch, his step is so slow. Reminds me of watching Cheeseburgers play D. Not saying Mays is lazy like Costner, but its got the same half speed thing going on. 12/7/2009 3:28:03 PM |

We NEEDED Mays until Lowe was willing to let Degand play, but right now Mays shouldn't be playing anything but garbage minuets until he starts playing better. If Degand starts fucking up again, sure put in Mays but until that happens leave him on the bench.12/7/2009 3:35:44 PM |

Mays looks confused most of the time. He's a pretty good shooter and can get to the basket, but he's a poor distributer and doesn't seem to know what's going on.
The best thing we have going for us this year is a more aggressive attitude/work ethic. If some of our freshmen can step up(Davis/Wood) we can be pretty solid this year. All in all our talent isn't that bad this year. 12/7/2009 3:47:06 PM |

Mays' main problem is he doesn't have a position.
He's a point guard that can't pass or dribble and shooting guard that can't shoot. The only thing he's done well this year is taking it to the hoop and drawing fouls. 12/7/2009 3:47:26 PM |

Mays will be fine once he's not being relied on to run the point. So hopefully Degand can continue to play well and keep his academics up.

Mays needs to develop more before he'll get starting time at PG or SG. He's not getting enough assists or points. Just remember that Javi struggled a long time before coming around. I think Mays will hit his stride eventually too.
Other thoughts - glass half full version, I know the team is ready to make a title run OK?
1) State scored 52 points in a half to overcome an 11 point deficit, on the road, against a decent Big East opponent. I wasn't sure that this team would score 52 points in a half all year. I also wasn't expecting any decent OOC wins, especially on the road.
2) Davis and Wood - gotta love both these kids. One is starting, the other is our best spark off the bench. Very impressed with both.
3) Horner - So far the message to all the Horner haters out there: Fuck you. I repeat, fuck you.
4) Hustle, intensity, chemistry - Win or lose... gotta love watching this team. Kudos Sid. Kudos.

Horner is definitely looking solid this year. Shooting over 50% and looking confident.
Sure, given we're off from UNC's and Dukes couple of 4/5 star players.
But if you look at our players and their national ranks out of high school, really not that bad. All top 150. End of the day these guys should be able to play well at the college level. Plenty of other teams are/have done a lot with way less talent.

haha this is by far the gripiest, whiniest and most irrational post since the marquette game.
first of all, marquette most likely does not qualify as a "very tough" big east squad.
2nd, even if everyone loved sid and we were undefeated and ranked top 10, there would be things to complain about. no team is perfect, one of the fun things about following sports is playing coach and identifying the team/coach weaknesses.
3rd, well there is no 3rd i guess, the rest your post was old man "get off my lawn" level gibbierish. who cares that we werent on the court, if we were 0-7, are we supposed to giving the guys props for "trying hard?" in the context of this being a weak year for the acc, yea maybe we're average or even above average talent wise. in a normal year we'd be bottom barrel. compared to last year we're worse - athletically and otherwise better, but worse in talent
Our talent and athleticism is a lot better than Virginia or even Maryland (coaching is WAY worse than Maryland). But a couple 4*s and a bunch of 3*s isnt that hot in the ACC. It's like a #25 recruiting class in football. I'd take that every year in the ACC, but it's mediocre to bad in the SEC
look at the guys getting minutes for Miami. I'm not talking UNC or Duke here, but a fucking football school:
Adrian Thomas 4* Dwayne Collins 4* James Dews 4* DeQuan Jones 5* Reggie Johnson 4* Malcolm Grant 1* Durand Scott 5* Cyrus McGowan 4* Garrius Adams 3*
Even VPI, who I'm sure most people think is entirely the product of Seth Greenberg yelling at people has Delaney, Jeff Allen, JT Thompson and Dorenzo Hudson - all 4*s. 12/7/2009 9:10:41 PM |

1* means not evaluated. I think most players with BCS offers (especially ACC) get automatically bumped to 3 as long its before the spring signing period. rice and mcclinton were 1s or 2s, so was josh davis
looks like he was known actually, another 4*: http://hsnewyork.scout.com/a.z?s=403&p=8&c=1&nid=1962396
fuck up on my part. he did a year of post grad and transferred from villanova. scout apparently was too lazy to slam the star button again after the PG year

Gonna throw this question out there and would like a decent explanation:
Howell, although recently hurt and possibly out of shape, and Painter, athletic but raw seem like they could be super talented. Why play them the least of anyone on the bench when Sid could be getting them into non-conference games and getting real game experience, crucial for depth during ACC season. Wood and Davis, although with certain skills of their own, are getting much more PT...and playing well for freshmen...but the fact still remains.
Anyone guess why Howell and Painter would not get more PT? 12/7/2009 9:47:44 PM |

because you don't play your 2nd best players when you're about to lose a game just so that they get real game experience

Painter is just getting his feet wet but seems to be playing a little bit better each time he plays. He struggles defensively which is why he isnt playing as much. Davis and wood play much better defense.
