But 8 out of 15 coaches in the ACC have won at least a P5 conference championship. Gott has won 2 SEC regular season championships. Can he reciprocate at State? I'd be thrilled if we made us a consistent Top 5 in the ACC behind UVa, DUke, Louisville and UNC. And a consistent 5 or 6 seed in the NCAA? A top 25 program nationally. Doable

that's not at all why we lost. their defensive matchup zone is what killed and confounded us. the press was somewhat effective for them...but we beat the press with ease against syracuse and clemson a few games ago. that was a much bigger issue earlier in the year.

I was disappointed in how we handled duke's press. I thought we had gotten over our issues with it after looking terrible against it when we played West Virginia because we improved after that. But we did not look good against it against Duke, along with having no clue what to do against their zones. Duke reminded me of how I have read jimmy v used to coach, throwing multiple defenses at us.

It infuriates me when we're going against the press and we're still in the backcourt and whoever catches the ball dribbles once then picks up their dribble. I mean, I know guys like Kyle or Lennard are bigs and aren't used to bringing the ball up court. But god damn guys. If you keep your dribble, you might be able to occasionally bring the ball over the timeline yourself. When you immediately pick up your dribble, that's when you get trapped and have to waste a timeout or turn the ball over.

Duke's press didn't cause us to turn the ball over much IIRC. It was designed more to get us totally out of sync on offense. They tried to do the same thing to Notre Dame, but ND had seen what Duke did to State and had a gameplan for it.

If we'd simply had a big in the middle of that zone that was a realistic option to shoot the jumper or drive to the basket then I think it would've opened up Cat & Lacey to play more like they had been in recent games. Washington might have been that big, but then you've gotta hope he's having one of his good games and then you live with all the other things he does on the court that make you face palm.

Overall I thought our ceiling this year as a NCAA-T team. We've gotta start beating teams that we should be beating (Wake/Clemson/BC) to make a legit move up in the standings. Hopefully that comes next year with the addition of Henderson and another year of development for Cat/Anya/Freeman/Martins/Abu/Washington.

It didn't matter what we did in the Duke game...we still were going to lose the way they were shooting/clicking on offense. The only difference was whether we were going to play well enough to make it a 10 point game or a 30 point game. We were cold and settling for jumpers, so it was a 30 point game. Sucks...but that's the way it is.

I grew up during the Les era and was in middle/high school during the shitty part of the Herb era. Got lucky and saw us to go the tourney most of my college years at State...but those Lowe years were miserable.

Basically...+1 for credibility for making us relevant again and being really fucking excited about the NCAA tournament. It blew chunks growing up and not having a team in the tourney...and likewise being out of college, of drinking age to go out to bars and watch the tournament, and then not having anyone to cheer for.

I like our team, I like our players, I generally like our style of play, I like winning more games than we lose, I like beating UNC and Duke way more often than we have in my lifetime, and I FUCKING LOVE BEING IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT.

Lowe was hired at the end of my freshman year. I lived that shit. +1000 for it not being that bad.

Next year should be the best year. After that, its gonna depend on what we can get out of these 2015 and 2016 classes. 2016 is gonna have to be a good one, but I have faith that he can get us some good pieces to keep it going.

^^^ pretty much this. I lived through the days of the Les Robinson invitational (8/9 play-in game) and Herb's crappy NIT years before finally figuring out how to scrape the bottom of the barrel and get into the NCAAs. not beating the tar holes, Duke, anyone of consequence really. now we've got a coach with the place turned around, consistantly making the NCAAs, beating our rivals. feels good, man yeah we still have a ways to go, but Gott has shown he's the right man for the job; no fear of our rivals, no "kissing their rings". we might be still living in the past like Indiana, but we're on the right track, and hopefully the Curse of Jimmy V will fade away now that demented dean is in hell where he belongs.

I was in school from 2002-2006, so I got spoiled. March was always my favorite month until the Lowe years.
