no...they're releasing it under the name Wii Play which actually will release at launch in most regions except the US. It cost the same as a normal game but comes with an extra controller..no nunchuck though.

The news came about from the company's annual sales conference last week. President of Gamestop, Steve Morgan said, "The great thing is there is a lot of demand. But launch is one day. And really the key to this business is what flows are the launch. We did learn a lesson last year. I think the lession is caution and optimism at the same time."



That does not say "We're not doing preorders" its saying that They're going to take their fucking time and make sure they can deliver pre orders on time to everyone who does.

The day the gamecube was released I went down to my local Circuit City and bought one. no waiting in line, no pre-orders, no hassle at all. I even managed to get one of the "cool" black ones instead of the purple ones.

I have a very similar story with the DS Lite(although admittedly the demand wasn't as high for that) The majority of me believes there will be a similar situation when the Wii is released. I guess the only thing that might hurt availability of the Wii would be people desperately wanting a PS3 and then "settling" for a Wii when they can't find one. I still don't expect shortages though. I don't see the lack of pre-orders being an issue at all.

The lineup for GC and Xbox were pretty damn good IMO. GC had Super Smash Bros. Melee (not on launch day, but out within a month), Rogue Leader, and Tony Hawk 3. Xbox had Halo, which I'm not a big fan, but whose popularity is undeniable and Oddworld, which didn't sell well, but is nonetheless a good game.

As someone once pointed out, a system launch only needs one killer app with a few lesser titles to cover must-have genres like sports and racing. After that, a really good game every few weeks to a month is important to maintain momentum. The only thing the Wii lacks for its launch IMO is a really good party game.

Sega desperately needs to put out another Samba de Amigo for this system. The hardware's already there.

2 things:

1) only problem with having all your awesome games at launch is you lose steam too quick. if they put out zelda, mario, kart, ssb, etc all on day 1 what are they gonna release next summer or next xmas? better to hold off than to have to make similar sequels (which will sell well but probably not as quite as much).

2) to clarify, ps2 was unarguably terrible when it came to launch titles. gc was alright, but i dont think any of those titles (save maybe smash bros but even that is hit or miss with a lot of people) were system sellers in particular. xbox was my favorite with doa3/halo/oddworld (which i also liked), but there werent a ton of games for a while.

I didn't mean to imply that Microsoft wouldn't benefit from PS3 shortages, I just meant that I think Nintendo launching so close to Sony will have a much greater chance of picking up buyers that can't get a brand new PS3. I would think that most people that want a 360 already have one. Or can go out and buy one now. I don't see a ton of people waiting for the PS3 launch and then buying a 360.

I have no issues at all for the 250 dollar price tag or the cost of the controller. Nintendo is a buisness, if they call sell out of a product if they sold it at 250...then why sell that product lower? They're making profit right out of the gate...Good for them.
