that 2nd period was flat-out horrible. I would really enjoy it if Staal would play with some intensity.

we got hosed on all the bullshit

the penalty shot, the non called penalty shot/penalty (is it really legal to just trip somebody while they are going in with the puck to shoot?), the holding on the other side of the ice during empty net or right before. that interference call how does that work, our guy ended up on the ice, although i didn't really see anything, i thought it was on them.

i hate saying this but i really do think the refs prevented this game from going to at least overtime.

and then some of our penalties were just stupid. stupid. stupid.

The play where Cole got tripped up was totally legal...you can rape a dude if you get the puck first.

Penalty shot was a stick-on-stick play from above, which is a big sticking point in the new rules.

The interference at the end was marginal but it was on Cole, not Staal (who was on his back on the ice).

by far the most questionable call was the osu-miami grade late call on the penatly shot. the ref (I forget which one it was) waited until the shot was saved to put his arm up.

Watching it on TV I saw something that I didn't in the arena...when Craig slashed Pohl on the stick, his stick broke, and those were Fraser's exact words when he was explaining it to Craig. The lateness still sucked, but it's the right call if we're going by the book (high and over top instead of underneath and within a foot of the blade).

Which holding are you talking about, the Commodore one early? That one was ticky-tack but he used the free hand.

video coming

i can't say it was too bad of a night though, i caught the luckiest shirt ever, it was flying over my head, then it bounced off of the small piece of glass in front of the 200's above the side video boards, bounced off the head of the people on the deck, and onto the back row where i was sitting. i was like holy shit

youtube made it look like shit but my FTP isn't working

its close

It's really not close at all, he clearly gets the puck before he makes contact with Cole, and the net is clearly off the far peg before the puck crosses (not to mention Raycroft is dealing with the fact that Cole is crashing into him).

Does anyone know what the deal is with the FSN HD broadcasts? What channel are those shown on? I am in Charlotte right now, and have a feeling they will not be showing it in HD here.

If we trade Grahame, Ward is still the starter and Khabi has entirely too much salary for 1) this team, and 2)his performance.

Health would be the biggest obstacle that the team needs to overcome. In addition to playing later in the season than any team in the East last year, the Canes have played the most games in the NHL. Guys like Brindy, Hedican, Wallin, Cole and others all have injuries that are at least marginally above the typical soreness that an NHL-er goes through every day. Secondly, more motion on the power play would help.
Commodore is growing his hair out. He gets it cut prior to the season and cuts it at the conclusion of said season.

Anything else for me before you cease hockey discussion?

yes, lets trade for khabibulins $6.75 million contract. WHAT A SWELL IDEA!

you're about as fucking retarded as apkaufma who tried to tell me we should buy out Rod Brind'Amour before the last season. Holy shit, what a fucking genius that clown was.

im all for talking hockey, but talking hockey does not involve nikolai khabibulin. unless the words, "worst idea ever" are included.

at any rate, lets say Khabi didnt suck... his salary would put us over the cap and the League would block the move

i honestly just threw a familiar name out there.... if i werent studying macro presently i wouldve looked up something better... for instance i know roenick is rumored to be traded, then i would discuss where i think he would fit in.... same for darcy tucker....

sorry bout the khabi talk

^roenick is a "me-first" jackass that past his prime 7 years ago. He's probably the worst guy in the league for this team. Also, while he's playing well now, Tucker is a total douchebag.

Trade for Khabibulin, Roenick, Tkachuck, Mike Gartner (I bet he can still play!), Numminen, and bring back Tverdovsky. Winnipeg Jets line FTW

agreed there... i dont want either of them in this city unless they are on the losing team that isnt ours.

would leclair fit in here do you think? maybe a recchi like replacement? just curious.... i dont know how his stats look this year or anything.... but seems like he could be a role player

hahah like roenick not playing in the 96 world cup because he was a FA and didnt want to risk getting hurt but still hung around the team and took credit. he says shit that needs to be said at times, but he can do that from some other team.

and again i agree with dammit100, tucker is a cheap shoting prick.

I'd take a trade for dougie weight again. even though we could have had him for far less than that 3.5 million contract.

but a serious name we should look at... wayne gretzky, i heard he was good.

Honestly I wouldn't really consider making any sort of major trade until at least after Christmas, barring a major crisis/injury. Stillman appears to be a huge boost to the PP and to our scoring in general. Aucoin is showing some potential, so maybe keep him for another game or two (though doubtful if Brindy comes back). Actually, Aucoin is doing pretty well with faceoffs.

Look at our lineup (a potential lineup at least):

Stillman Staal Cole
Whitney Brindy Williams
Ladd Belanger Walker
LaRose K.Ads Letowski

Commodore Hedican
Gleason Wallin
Babchuck Wesley

Ward
Grahame

Let some combination of C.Ads, Tanabe, Aucoin, Hutch, and eventually Gleason when Kaberle returns from the IR ride the pine.

What do we have? A really solid 1st line-up there with most teams' first lines. A great, checking and scoring second line. Whitney can dish out sweet passes, Williams has been scoring at a nice clip lately, and Brindy is the MVP of the team. Our third line I think is solid too. Although we aren't likely to see 25 goals out of Belanger like we did with Cullen, he is on pace for 14 goals (he had 17 last year). Moreover, Walker is on pace for a really nice 24 goals and 55 points. Our depth is pretty good. We can predict having one 40 goal scorer (Staal), four 30 goal scorers (Cole, Willy, Whitney, Brind'Amour), and one 20 goal scorer (Walker). That's pretty damn good. Commodore is also on pace for a surprising 10 goals. We have some good scoring depth I think.

On paper our defense is our weak point. We have no true #1 guy like a Lidstrom or Redden to log 25-30 minutes a night. We devy our time up between about 6 second pairing type players and hope for the best. Sometimes the results are great, but lately our D has been pretty sporadic. We REALLY need Gleason to step up his game for us to have a chance of succeeding, IMO. Hedican and Commodore have been our two most consistent players and are producing well. Wes has also been pretty reliable. Slow, but reliable. Chucky has been up and down as predicted. He's a project, but he should be flat out solid in a few seasons, provided we keep him. Kaberle will help our defense tremendously by providing an unheralded, but steady presence and more importantly, a good ability to man the point on the PP. Even MORE importantly, he is always keen on making that outlet pass to lead to an outnumbered rush and a good scoring chance. Nevertheless, if we do make a deal, I would perhaps go for a more blockbuster type thing involving a defensive gem like Pitkanen, Timonen, or Boyle. Heck, maybe even a guy like Brian Pothier http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?name=brian+pothier&hubname=nhl-capitals. Another depth pairing guy isn't going to help us.

Our goaltending has been lukewarm lately (save Wardo's recent performance vs. the Bolts), sure. But hell no do we trade for another starter! Cam is the playoff MVP last year-without Ward the Stanley Cup is elsewhere. He is really, really good and will only get better (he's freakin' 22 years old!). If we trade Ward, we better get a PREMIUM addition to this team-someone like Malkin, Ryan Whitney + package, Michalek, along with a shiny new starting goaltender. Grahame is a hot and cold backup. We only have him for two years-after that Justin Peters SHOULD be knocking at the door to play backup (and play a good one at that).

I think we have a real good team up and down. Do we have a chance gunning against a team like Buffalo, San Jose, or Anaheim in a 7 game series? Probably only a tiny one. But then again anything can happen in the playoffs. What I'm saying (my thesis here) is that we wait a little bit to see how things shakeup with Stillman and Rod the Bod in our lineups before we go doing something pointless and stupid (like trading Ladd).
