Quote : | "N.C. STATE A squad already boasting a formidable frontcourt duo in Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley made itself stronger at several positions, including up front. “I like their class, especially because of J.J. Hickson,” Oettinger says of a five-freshman contingent.
6-0 Javier Gonzalez Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack returns virtually intact, other than a gaping hole at point guard. Two sophomores, Farnold Degand and Marques Johnson, acclimated to the program while sitting out last season as transfers from other Division I schools – Iowa State and Tennessee, respectively. Johnson does not become eligible until the conclusion of the fall semester.
Gonzalez follows in the footsteps of former Pack great Chris Corchiani, who likewise came to Raleigh from Miami two decades ago.
But, while Corchiani was a nationally known prep star, his successor comes with modest credentials. Oettinger does not even think Gonzalez can cut it as a starting point guard in the ACC. “I really thought he was more of a mid-major prospect,” the evaluator says. “He does everything pretty well, I don’t think he does anything great.” Oettinger describes Gonzalez as athletic, quick, and a solid ballhandler and defender.
Konchalski points out that Gonzalez moved south from Elizabeth, New Jersey, a good proving ground. “He’s a tough, competitive kid,” he says. “He’s quick and he defends and he competes.”
One ACC assistant insists Gonzalez is a good shooter, with the skills to be an immediate factor. Well, not immediate – the point guard is out until around Thanksgiving with a torn ligament in his right thumb.
6-9 J.J. Hickson Like Duke’s Singler, FSU’s Alabi, and Georgia Tech's Gani Lawal, the burly Hickson already has attracted notice before playing a single regular season game in college. “J.J. Hickson is a major, major, major get,” Konchalski says. “He’s really good. He’s a horse.”
Oettinger says Hickson is strong, athletic, quick, and dangerous around the basket. The post player possesses a handsome range of offensive moves, including a jump hook and a jumpshot effective to 15 feet. “He’s going to be a tough matchup as long as he’s going to be in college,” Oettinger predicts. “He’s going to be a lottery pick.”
An ACC assistant describes Hickson as “a pro-level athlete” with impressive scoring and passing abilities. “It will be interesting to see how they use him, because McCauley and Costner play pretty well together,” he says.
6-7 Tracy Smith Smith came from Detroit to play at Durham’s Mt. Zion Academy, and emerged as that notable program’s best player. Smith had a great reputation early in his career, according to Konchalski, but failed to live up to his billing until he lost 60 pounds following his junior season in high school.
Oettinger says that, with the weight loss, Smith’s athleticism emerged. “Suddenly he became a much better player, because he always had good skills.” The scout describes Smith as a natural power forward who can shoot or drive. “He’s a big-time player,” Oettinger says.
An ACC assistant lauds Smith as a skilled, faceup power forward. “When he’s motivated, he has talent,” the coach says. Another assistant says Smith has an effective mid-range offensive game, but expects he will move inside “once the lefty (Costner) leaves after this year.”

Ehhh I don't know if Hickson is going to be among the top 10-12 or so freshman that leave after one year.
Costner may leave, but what position will he play in the NBA? I think he's an ideal college player, but will be an NBA role player. Kind of like Sean May or Hansbrough. 11/4/2007 7:50:42 PM |

I don't know. I think we'll get one more year out of Costner too. He and McCauley seem to be really good friends and I think he's enjoying his time here. According to the Technician he was one of the two athletes who organized the athlete talent show for charity they had in Stewart a week or two ago. I don't think people who plan on peacing out in a year care much about anything going on not related to their sport. Read, I'm referring to Hickson. Of course all of this is provided we don't make a deep run in the NCAA tournament. If we make it to the Elite 8 or Final Four, basically far enough for Costner to get the exposure necessary to be considered a lottery pick, then I would agree with you in saying he's gone.

This was not a stupid post. He is talking about transfering, not going to the NBA.
How is that dumb? Of course it is possible that Horner may get ticked off if his minutes go down and want to transfer, but that will not happen.
