Did anyone else notice that a couple of months ago we cut Keary Colbert, and we just drafted Jonathan Stewart?

That's right - out with Colbert, in with Jon Stewart.

Still say they should have taken Brohm....wanted them to for 2 years now.

I would have picked Otah were they were at....took Brohm with that 2nd 1st round pick. Then later in the 3rd round could have picked up Slaton, who will probably as good of a pro as Stewart. I mean we didn't even pick the best RB at the time at 13.....

^i disagree...if you read the pro commentary on stewart, there are two common comparisons...larry johnson and ladanian tomlinson. he isn't a soft back that is susceptible to injury and i'm really happy with that pick.

i did want a qb too though...but i'm still a big believer in trading or signing a qb and not drafting one. wait for a qb to establish value and then sign a proven guy...it's just a high risk position for a huge draft pick.

We didn't even pick one late....so I guess they are content with having Jake who might not be 100% and isn't even good when he is and a guy who has played less than half a season. Wow. This is why this team will never get to the top....

I wasn't a fan of our 1st round picks but there is definately potential there. The most appaulling thing about today was our REFUSAL to take a DT before the 6th round. Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoeatu are starting and we're taking TE depth over DeMario Pressley.. seriously?!?

Homer glasses or not, that's just plain retarded.

QB isn't a need position for the Panthers. They have Delhomme who is what he is, Moore who has shown flashes of being somewhere between decent and good, and Basaenez is still floating around as well.

I don't understand how the solution to your issue of thinking you only have Delhomme and Moore ("a guy who has played less than half a season") is to draft a late round QB who hasn't played at all.

There are several experienced DT's in the free agent market, which was probably a factor in not selecting one earlier.....Besides, there were several games last year that we would have won (with almost the exact same D that we will put on the field this year) had our offense not been anemic, which would have put us in the playoffs. So it's only logical that they concentrate on the offense.

Now we've got good depth @ o-line, the power back that we need, and proven receivers to play opposite of smitty. If jake stays healthy for the majority of the season, we set ourselves up for a good playoff push.

I never understood all the QB talk....what sense does it make to draft another young QB when we already have two (one that came in and one 2 of 3 games last year)....if anything they should look to pick up a vet in FA.

Speaking of a Veteran DT, the Panthers signed DT Darwin Walker to a one-year deal.

I feel good about that signing. He's only 30 and should have a couple good years ahead of him. Holding out for a contract, getting traded for a 5th rounder, and then ultimately getting cut should be a humbling experience for him. Hopefully he'll take this oppurtunity to get his career back on track.

^ Very good call. I was kinda freaking out yesterday at the FO's refusal to draft a DT but apparently they were on the phone with Walker all weekend. I feel much better now.

Say what you want about giving up all that for Otah, I am glad the panthers are investing in the rungame. We all know that DeAngelo wouldnt have been able to carry the load, so this years draft kinfod makes up for us picking him in the 1st round 2 years ago...

Build the rungame and that feeds the D (time off the clock) and our passing game...

I would have preferred we took Otah at 13 and Forte/Smith/Choice later in the draft to compliment D-Will, but clearly Stewart was our guy. We haven't missed on a 1st rounder lately so I will trust in the FO that he's worth the price we paid.

I'm concerned about his durability but it's not like we're going to ask him to be a workhorse and shorten his career. There is a long list of teams that have made that mistake.

^ I think he was drafted to be a complimentary back and he'll continue in that role with the addition of Stewart.

I agree, but I think they could be a hell of a 1-2 punch, plus we picked up toefield...he might turn out to be a steal.

If we make the playoffs next year, I think the Otah trade will be looked upon favorably (i.e. we'll only be giving the eagles a 21-32 pick, hopefully 32 ) if not, it won't....and if we don't make the playoffs, fox/hurney won't have to worry about not having a 1st next year

foster was pretty impressive when he was Davis' change of pace back, he just wasn't an every down guy. I think DeA is much the same in that respect.

Looking at last year, SF gambled that they'd make the playoffs with the addition of Joe Staley and it backfired. Whereas CLE made out pretty well trading up for Quinn despite him holding the clipboard all year.

I knew that the Panthers must have wanted Otah pretty bad with the fact that they gave up next years first for him, but I found this quote out of the Observer pretty interesting.

"The Panthers called the Chicago Bears about acquiring the 14th pick and did the same with every team beneath that spot before finally striking a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 19th selection."

Can't imagine what those other teams would have wanted to move up. I like the pick, lets just hope that the pick the Eagles got doesn't come any earlier than 25th.

don't worry

the talking heads on philly sports talk radio aren't happy with the deal either.

of course it's for different reasons, and wanted philly to be more proactive this year in getting immediate contributors (above and beyond a punt/kick returner), as opposed to trading picks for the future.

but these tards are never happy with anything.

And I didnt realize that Otah was from the county i live in now, until the story in the paper yesterday..

^Philly is going to be cheering against the Panthers next year with a fierceness

Quote :

true that and i hope the panthers dont suffer the same fate

however, the panthers over the last 6 years have basically had a record between 7-9 and 9-7, with a couple 11-5 seasons...never really really great, but never really bad...if we miss the playoffs this year, Philly will probably get the 15th pick...somewhere in that range...if we make the playoffs they'll probably get the 20th pick or something...so while this might backfire, I don't think we'll finish poorly enough under any circumstances to give them a top pick...I mean we finished 7-9 with DAVID CARR starting multiple games for us and Deshaun Foster as our starting RB...we should be able to at least finish 9-7 this year, which in the NFC, probably at least means a wildcard...and who in the NFC South really scares anybody? Atlanta, Tampa and New Orleans...none of them really jump out as a team thats going to win 12 games...this division should be up in the air like it always is

imo, it hinges on how effective deuce mccalister is coming off the latest knee surgery. If he can't take the brunt of the carries for NO, we've got the inside track to the division title.

and this has to be the year the worst to first trend ends in the NFC South....Atl is not going to win the division.

Among the undrafted college FAs, we signed the Boise QB who has this listed under his accolades:

Quote :
"Helped rally Boise State to a 70-35 win over Idaho going 4-of-8 for 75 yards and touchdown in relief of starter Jared Zabransky"

http://www.broncosports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9900&ATCLID=521840

He knows how to rally his team to victory!

Here are the rest of our FA signings from today, not counting former one-year Wolfpacker Darwin Walker, who should give us some nice DT depth

DE	Casper Brinkley	6-2	259	22	South Carolina	Thomson, GA
TE Chris Conklin 6-3 249 21 Wingate Graham, NC
CB Cortney Grixby 5-8 165 22 Nebraska Omaha, NE
FB Breyone Evans 5-11 238 22 Massachusetts Bristol, CT
S Joe Fields 6-0 201 22 Syracuse Houston, TX
DT Brandon Jenkins 6-4 281 24 Mississippi Memphis, TN
WR Damon Morton 5-10 176 22 Colorado State Riverside, CA
QB Taylor Tharp 6-1 203 Boise State Boulder, CO
CB Darren Toney 5-11 185 24 Arkansas State Lake Village, AR
P Dan Zeidman 6-0 201 21 Idaho State Spring Valley, CA

So the last place team from teh previous year has won the South every year, sure.

But until this last year, there had been an NFC South team in the NFC Championship game as well, so I think that with the end of one streak might come the beginning of a new streak

Go Panthers.
