Play of the game... great steal results in an easy costner to fergi MISSED layup. Would have gotten em in it.

other potential play of the game... great block by costner, takes one dribble and lets the ball go and essentially gives it to miami

I love how Javi makes every 3 after the whistle or the play is dead.

He did that like 3 times today....when the game is on he is lucky to catch iron.

I hate to say this, I really do...but I miss Herb kinda. I love Sid to death, and I watch our team faithfully. But it seems like he's not being a leader to them. It's like they see him as "one of the guys" and have a hard time taking Sid seriously or just listening to him. I think that's the biggest problem with our team and it clearly shows the most with the team's inability to click and work together.

I honestly had no thoughts we were gonna win this game after seeing that Wake Forest match last Saturday, but I was so optimistic about it. I really hoped being optimistic no matter the outcome would help me deal with the inevitability of this L, but I'm still pretty fucking disappointed and somewhat depressed.

^ i honestly don't, and that's not just sour grapes.

this season sucked, but a poor showing in the tourney year after year, and 8-38 against duke and unc? he had to go. sidney is looking to pretty definitely not be the answer, but herb and nc state were done.

I liked Herb, and hated seeing him go, but the situation had become untenable. The majority of the fanbase hated him, and nothing was going to change their minds. It was best for all involved parties that he move on.

As for Lowe, if I were evaluating him based purely on watching this season's games, I'd say can him. But he showed potential last year, so I guess my jury's still out on him. He sure didn't look like the right coach for us this year, though.

AT LEAST WE GOT RID OF GAVIN. NOW THE STARTING 6 CAN BE THE STARTING 5 AND GEL AS A TEAM.

but seriously, I think next year will be one of the better years we're going to see for a while. I hope they can break .500 in conf

the real point in all of this is unless we have a good coach call up our idiot of an AD and tell him that he's interested in the job, no one needs to be fired before lee fowler is, b/c left up to him he'll fuck it up again.

^^^ Yeah, basically. I've never been one of OMFG JED CLAMPETT FIRE HIM WE SUCK AT EVERYTHING types, but that basketball coaching search has got to be one of the most clumsily handled things I've ever seen. The fact that every goddamn thing we did got leaked to the press showed that Fowler can't keep the athletic department under control.

^^They should be at least within enough games to keep it interesting. Probably finish about like last year, with me hoping they could win the last 6 or whatever to have a chance.

I really think it's because he had all these freshman kids and has a hard time being a father to them (not trying to say anything about his son here). He needs to find some way to get them to listen to what he needs them to do. He needs to motivate them without punishing them (a la Hickson) and/or "talking about the positives (a la UNC and down by 30 at halftime)."

When he had Atsur, an already experienced PG running what he wanted, we did okay with little talent off the bench. You can't say Sid's necessarily a bad coach overall, but he definitely needs some talent on the freshmen.

i don't doubt that he knows basketball (nba flavor, at least), but the dude has got to learn how to handle kids, b/c right now he has no idea.

At least based on how he acts during games (I obviously have no knowledge of what goes on during practice), I sometimes wonder if Sidney gets that these players do not make more money than him. They're kids, and he can yell at them if he needs to. He doesn't ever really seem to get pissed during games.

So what part of not knowing how to deal with the two freshman who played regularly led to the complete regression of two of our best players?

^^ That's what has me really befuddled about this season. There were so many things that this team did badly that I can't, as an outside observer, confidently identify what's wrong. It seems like there are a bunch of people saying "oh, it's just our guard play." The PG position was certainly an issue, but anyone who thinks that was the only problem is simplifying things. And there are a disturbing number of people simplifying things.

We really need to start setting up a Bruce Pearl hire.

He really strikes me as a guy who would love to follow in the footsteps of Jimmy V.

The thing is, last year when we didn't have Atsur in the lineup we were bad, but we weren't embarassing and we obviously weren't bottom of the ACC, nine-game-losing-streak bad. We returned four starters and yet somehow were not just worse, but remarkably worse.

That's the most frustrating part of all this -- we know for a fact that there are four guys who, a year ago, played together successfully and yet now they all suck. Who is to blame for that except the coach?

I mean it makes sense. If you were to build a team position by position, fantasy style, you would end up with a team much like state. Very good C, a PF who may not be quite as skilled, but hustles and makes up for his inabilities, a SF who can make plays inside or out (I'm talking about Costner here), a SG who can shoot from outside pretty well, and can drive on most defenders, and a PG who can pass it around a little and not turn it over too much. Oh, and Grant coming off the bench wouldn't hurt either....

the talent on this team was way too good to be 4-13, which is why they should have had a decent shot at challenging for the ACC tourney.. the only think I can think of is coaching, or players just being too damn ignorant to follow the instructions, in which case they should be benched.

I know I am known as a Herb dick rider or whatever but there were still plenty satisfied with Herb. I thought we wouldn't be able to get anyone better and you know what I was right. Apparently I wasn't the only one though because our season ticket holder numbers through the last of the Herb years were still very high and attendance was good. Our tickets/seats the last two years have gotten better and my rank or giving level hasn't really changed.

I think that Hickson single-handedly destroyed any chemistry the team built last season. He slowed down the offense, he forced shots, and when he had to dribble on the block you were in for a wild ride. McCauley played limited minutes because of him and was never able to get into a groove offensively all season long. To me he looked timid because if he made a mistake he knew J.J. was going to come in to replace him. Costner hated playing with him because if he looked inside to him he knew Hickson wasn’t going to kick the ball back out.

I for one hope Hickson leaves for the NBA. I think that Costner and McCauley will be able to find their chemistry again and Tracy Smith is a guy who can provide a spark off the bench if either is in foul trouble or just having a rough night.

Many of you may not agree with me on any of these points, but I think we all agree that Marques Johnson has to go. How was this guy considered an upper tier recruit at one time? I think he would struggle in NC State intramurals right now.

our fans make me sick
JJ isnt the reason our team didnt have chemistry
why anyone would want a good kid to leave early just baffles the shit out of me

now, i will agree that johnson should have his scholly yanked. that guy shouldnt even be on the practice squad.

Since I've been here:
05-06 #4 seed in ACC, Lost in ACC Quarters, Lost in 2nd round of NCAAs
06-07 #10 seed in ACC, Lost in ACC Finals, Lost in 3rd round of NIT
07-08 #12 seed in ACC, Lost in ACC First Round, no postseason

I'm hoping there's nowhere, but up for next year. Only thing worse would be to have an NCAA violation have us ineligible for the tourney for the next couple years. It could happen.....
