^ i dont think her role in the show is to be defined as the "fat ugly chick". if that's what they were going for, then they could've made her appear much worse. i think you're whining a bit too much about an irrelevant person in an irrelevant side plot 3/13/2009 2:42:32 AM |

that was outstanding - the best of the season. but yea...... ^^ i don't know what happened there at the end. guess they'll have to clear that one up next week.
The new boss fit in great, and reacted perfectly to all the strange Scranton-branch stuff that was thrown at him. Some great lines:
"it was my understanding that I was not going be managed" "what gave you that idea" ".... it was my understanding"
"i think i thrive under a lack of accountability"
"excellent segue into what is really my only point, which is I don't need to be managed"
It's hilarious that he thinks Jim is a weirdo and a slacker. It was great how he put Jim on the spot about the Assistant Regional Manager business.
btw, where is the opening credits they used a couple weeks ago that showed all the characters? I liked that one - now they're back to the original 3/19/2009 10:13:38 PM |

or
since he is quitting they will discuss his moving to be with her and the season will end cliffhanger style?
or
none of the above 3/19/2009 10:26:10 PM |

no, it will be resolved by next week. Maybe with even something as lame as a misunderstanding - when Michael said "i quit" he just meant "i quit with this meeting" or something

well, i guess it depends on how you count them. If you count the two 1-hour episodes as 2 30-minute shows (which they were obviously written and filmed so they could be broken up in syndication), then this was episode 20 (not 21) of 29.
if you count the 1-hour episodes as a single episode, then this was 18 of 25, i believe (i think they scheduled 4 1-hour eps this season) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Office_(US)_episodes#Season_5:_2008.E2.80.932009 3/19/2009 11:31:16 PM |

If they want to make a case that Jim isn't just another Roy then they need to get married soon - or at least set a date.
And quit? He'd be fired for a tenth of those antics. That's one of the reasons I'm just not that much into the show anymore. The awkward situations have just gone too far.3/20/2009 8:25:17 AM |

^^i agree in some respects. Personally the way the show started out and the way the british version was done was the awkwardness was so effective because one could relate to how they would feel if that occurred in an actual office environment.
the antics portrayed in the past few seasons makes it possible to have that connection with the show. i'm not saying the show has gone down hill or i choose not to watch it based on this transformation, but it is a negative transformation in my opinion and a style to which i wish they would return. 3/20/2009 9:24:33 AM |

Imagine that. Successfully suspending disbelief during a show where they ask you to buy into the idea that people can have super powers.
I must have missed the Office episode where they set the precedence for super continual employment despite what you do powers. 3/20/2009 10:45:47 AM |

Michael Scott should have been fired in season one - how have you been watching the show up to this point?
I do like the fact that someone is finally challenging his job - it makes it seem more realistic when he can't get away with all this crap
maybe they'll be ready to fire him but Michael will find some way to blackmail one of the higher ups 3/20/2009 11:00:44 AM |

Well, they've at least tried to cover their bases on that one over the seasons:
1) His first two bosses in the series, Jan and Ryan, both had serious issues of their own that could be blamed for shortcomings in Scranton and elsewhere. 2) Michael is, apparently, an excellent salesman. 3) At least lately, his branch has been the only successful one in the area. Even if he does run the place like a man-child, it's making more money than anybody else, and you don't mess with that.
I agree it's still not very realistic, but the story has addressed the issue some.3/21/2009 2:45:39 AM |

^This was one of the more realistic episodes this season.
Behavior you would expect from Michael. Response you'd expect from an authoritative figure.
Here lately they've had Michael doing things that felt way over the top and completely out of character, even for him - complete with responses by his superiors that were equally baffling. In that one episode where he quit I kept waiting for Michael to defaecate on David Wallace's desk and for him to just sit there going duuuuuurrrrrrrr, here's a raise.

Michael Scott has been doing things like that since episode 1 of season 1, it's what I hate the most about the show, and I think it was a LOT worse in season one, if any of you have even actually seen it considering how long ago it was and how short a season it was
I watch the Office for pretty much everything but Michael Scott, a lot of the other characters are great and funny, but the show is getting pretty old and tired, and we really almost never get to see the warehouse guys at all anymore, a little variety in characters would be great and I think they've needed to do something to shake it up and get some fresh blood in the show
and whoever commented about some new 'pam/jim' drama, looks like you just got it
but I still don't see this stuff lasting more than a few more episodes before it's back to the same old same old3/27/2009 5:47:17 PM |

^^ it all depends on how the "michael scott paper company" turns out. So far, it's actually quite the opposite of "jumping the shark" - i mean, this is practically the most real thing that has happened in years. There is no way Michael still deserves a job at Dunder-Mifflin.
The show has been getting stale for several season, simply because of the premise itself - a documentary crew films at a paper company in small-town Pennsylvania..... you can only make that interesting for so long. I'm more than willing to see how this plays out, because it's about time for them to try something different.
it would really be jumping-the-shark if they found a way to re-hire Michael. 3/30/2009 1:29:53 PM |

I don't think so. They had three episodes that centered prominently on the fact that the Scranton branch was the only successful one in the company. People weren't sure how that happened under Michael's management, but it was still the case. They even sent Michael on tour trying to help other branches.
All they need to do to explain a re-hiring is to have Scranton's sale's drop off in his absence. Given that the new boss has put the borderline-retarded Kevin on phones and crossword enthusiast Stanley in charge of productivity, I don't think it's too much of a stretch.
Last successful branch goes under, corporate panics, tries to return to the status quo ante, asks for Michael's return. Michael, meanwhile, figures out that starting his own paper company is actually really hard, so he doesn't need much convincing to return -- he'd just have to demand more space from the old boss, as well as Pam being rehired as well. The whole storyline could easily be resolved in a few episodes without resorting to anything that even registers on the craziness scale for this series.3/30/2009 2:11:49 PM |
