so what's the best antivirus to use now that I've got Windows 7 installed? I figure now would be the best time to say goodbye to the ncsu symantec that I've been using all these years.

Eset NOD32. I've tried 6 others, they all either fucked the system, or hit me with warnings/notifications 30 times a day.

I've been getting a different BSOD every day for a week. I can't figure out what's going on. My 8800 was at like 80C and I forced an nTune installation which might have had something to do with it. Since I've uninstalled that and used rivatuner to crank my fan to 100% after cleaning it KMPlayer still crashes with 720p content, but GOMPlayer went through 2 hours of lost @ 720 last night.

None of the STOP errors came up on any windows 7 googles, they were all mad old like win9x or NT.

I went with eset. I went ahead and did the 30-day trial of NOD32 v4. If it's what yall like I may go ahead and buy it.

I'm liking it so far. I haven't installed all my programs yet, but it seems faster than my Vista 64 installation, which even I thought was faster than XP.

Installed this yesterday and it is pretty sweet so far, but I haven't even begun to install applications and I tried to backup using the XP backup tool but it got to the step where it wanted me to make a floppy and since I don't have a floppy drive I just kinda went without it and tried to restore from the backup file, 7 didn't like that too much. I need to spend some more time with it and figure out an easy way to backup/restore.

I'm running 4. V3 doesn't support (officially) Win7.

And your overclocking is not Windows problem. Amazingly, since I stopped "tweaking" my hardware, I have never had stability problems.

Oh, no I didn't overlock it (not since I quit wow), just used the software to force my fan to run at 100%

my 6400 *was* overclocked though, at interestingly enough i think it's reverted back. But it's been at 3GHz since I bought it like two years ago

Anytime I hear my hard drive make a random click I jump into paranoia mode thinking my drive is going to die.

It turns out the click was my new 1.5TB storage drive spinning down and back up. I learned that even in the "high performance" power profile, your hard drives are still set to turn off after 20 minutes of inactivity. You have to manually change that in the advanced power settings.

Are you running just the basic antivirus, or the smart security package with the firewall, etc?

We use v4 of Eset Smart Security at work. It's just as lightweight as v3 and the firewall is more configurable. I'd recommend it.

I'm bitching about small stuff here, but the one thing that catches me more than anything else is the new context menu when you right-click an item on the taskbar.

I'm so used from Win95 to Vista, that if you want to quickly close a bunch of windows you just right click, move your mouse up about 2 pixels and click on close.

In Windows 7, that distance increased. I don't know if I'll ever get used to it

it's amazing how many minute trivial nearly meaningless aesthetic changes get people the most upset, myself included

I'm forcing myself to use it as is for two weeks before trying to change anything and odds are I'll be used to it by then and it won't be annoying (RABBLE RABBLE CHANGE IS BAD)

when you think about it, really, most of the stuff is muscle memory that you have gotten used to for years and years, it really makes no difference for 'show desktop' to be one place or another, it's just as easy to click it on the right corner as the left corner, you've just got to remember to do it that way now

also the new pinning and quicklaunch changes are welcome imo, it is so much neater and cleaner when multiple windows are open, and the hover overs that display all windows of that type as well as displaying the actual window are great.

what does piss me off is the 'All Programs' bug where if there are more than 70 items, all programs goes totally blank, even though they're still all there in the 'start menu' folder. might be isolated to upgrades only but I dont think so

To begin with I never clicked the button before, it was always Win+D.

The only reason I really like the new position is because it is now a hot-spot for blanking out all my windows and showing the desktop. It's very helpful to temporarily show any gadgets that are running in the background.

I understand your point, but I think it'd still be very easy to get used to.

Libraries, I actually really like them. It is nice to consolidate different directories under one main heading but have different physical locations. I previously accomplished this by creating junctions, now it's not really necessary.

I'm somewhat hoping there will be a way to 'unofficically' just upgrade your RC when it breaks, I know you could port Beta to RC through some hacks even though it wasn't particularly supported

^^From what I've read, I'm not sure that Windows 7 with ship without DX11. But, after using the windows 7 beta for almost 6 months now, I'd say that it's certainly ready, otherwise.

really? i got great performance out of vista, much faster and more stable than xp. i don't think it crashed a single time that i had it. and going from 2gb to 4gb of memory made it even faster.

im still liking windows 7 a lot. i can't seem to get it to connect to my mac though. i enter my username and password, but it says the domain is invalid.

remote desktop on 7 is lightning fast, too.

yeah from the moment i installed it i had constant weird problems.. like once or twice a day everything would just freeze for a minute or two..then go back to normal. other times it would just lock up for no reason in the middle of doing little or nothing. also undo didn't work right when i had two instances of excel open..same version of office worked in win 7 and XP. the indexing service took a ton of resources for me.. it'd use 50% of processor and have the fan on for hours if I didn't manually force it to close. also had trouble getting a lot of programs to install even though they worked fine in windows 7

oh well.. back to win 7 and i'm happy

anybody have the track pad drivers for a macbook pro? i don't have my OS X DVD's with me.. I found the drivers for everything else but i still can't right click right now so that's getting annoying

I just ordered 6 gigs of RAM to replace my current 2 gigs, but don't plan on going to a 64 bit OS until 7 ships. From what I can tell, I should be able to create a ram disk out of all the memory vista 32 bit can't address and do exactly this.

^Why? If you have a capable machine, you should go ahead with Win7 x64. I've been running x64 on every machine I use (two desktops, one laptop) and have yet to have a single 64bit related issue.

I may, but I've already mentioned some of my personal barriers to switching right this second in this thread. When I switch it's going to take a lot of work, and when it gets released for reals I'll probably want to do a clean install.

^the only personal barriers you've mentioned are multi-mon support and your NAS, neither of which have anything to do with 32/64. And you don't lose or break any 32bit software by running with x64. So I'm still waiting to hear what this magical hangup is?

There isn't one. He's just like a lot of other people who think setting everything back up is going to be a bigger pain in the ass than it really is.

Those are the main ones, yeah. I also didn't say it has anything to do with 32/64. It has to do with moving to a new operating system; I'd feel the same way about doing a format and reinstall of the same OS, much less an OS I might as well wait around on while it gets a little better. I don't want to dual boot and switch gradually, unless windows 7 makes it much much easier to move the beginning of your partition when you're finally ready to get rid of the old one.

So, in summary
1) General things I'm not crazy about (multi-mon and NAS)
2) The overall hassle of starting from scratch (program installs and configuration)
3) I would have to start by dual booting, and Win 7 would go on the latter half of my disk. I did this exactly with Vista and it was a huge pain in the ass once I was ready to get rid of the XP partition on the beginning of my disk.

Migration isn't terribly difficult, but it's definitely not an hour or two process. It took me ~6 hours to fully backup and then restore all my data moving from B1 to the RC. Though 60% or so of that time was simply file copying back and forth from my backup disk.

I did install the x64 version on my test partition. Seems OK. I'm having a problem with sleep mode (that I also had in the other versions I've tested). Basically my computer locks up after it turns off the monitors but before it goes to sleep, and I have to do a hard reset. It's apparently a pretty common problem (from searching) and I found a utility to analyze sleep problems which indicated there were a lot of failures with USB devices. Unfortunately, disabling the sleep options for USB stuff resulted in a BSD, so I guess I'll just turn off sleep mode entirely for now

yea, sleep mode seems to be flaky. i also had a really long delay upon initial install, but it went fine.

i have to say how damn impressed i am with the fact that EVERY single device i have plugged in was recognized and ready to go out of the box. i didn't have to install a single driver!

I installed win7 rc1 on my unibody macbook in a bootcamp partition and it doesn't seem like the Aero interface is working. nothing seems transparent and I can't get any of the peek functions to work. Is there something I need to do to make this work? (the comp is 2.4 C2D, 2GB ram)
