i've always wondered the same thing. i would love to buy a t-shirt before the end of the game that ended up being wrong.

By the way I believe this is the first time a team has ever replaced their coach during the season and then gone on to win the Stanley Cup

The Devils have done the midseason coaching change with great teams a number of times, but I don't think they ever won the Cup after doing it.

LOL at calling Nicklas Lidstrom a choke artist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Devils

Quote :
"During the 1999–00 season, New Jersey was in the midst of a late-season swoon. Despite having one of the best records in the league, Lamoriello feared another early playoff collapse and made the controversial decision to fire head coach Robbie Ftorek and replace him with assistant Larry Robinson. The move paid off, as New Jersey defeated the Florida Panthers, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers to make the Stanley Cup Finals. In the Finals, the Devils reached the top again, defeating the defending champion Dallas Stars in six games to win the Stanley Cup for the second time."

so it looks like it has been done before

I do hope no hardcore Detroit fans try to claim bullshit on that game. I was clearly pulling for Detroit here, but the team that played better in game 7 won.

A Ray Emery and Robert Esche goaltending tandem. They're just straight up embracing the Philly goalie curse now.

Hardcore right here, and we got straight up beat. I actually am taking this relatively well because we were indeed legitimately beaten. Pitt has a great fan base and great arena. The cup will be well taken care of. Hats off.

Now back to my heavy drinking.

1. Can't believe Fleury didn't get the Cup until 16th in line after the gonzo saves he made both early and late.
2. ZIG-O-MAN-IS

oh yea no doubt do i agree with wyloch, it stings less cause pittsburgh is beyond legitimate and they fought harder than detroit... like i said a couple posts ago, it is not a fluke when you go INTO detroit for game 7 and nearly shut them out

good job penguins, i know how you felt last year now

hope to do this all over again next year... sorry canes fans but these last two years were too much fun

It's basically a seniority thing. The young guys have to wait, no matter how well they played. Unless you're the captain, of course.

On another note:

Quote :
"Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on NBC drew a terrific 7.51 Million Viewers on Friday night, with a 3.0/11 among Adults 18-49. It made NBC easily the top draw on Friday night, and is likely the highest-rated hockey game in many, many years, and may be the most-watched hockey game of the decade, as the largest competition is 2003’s Game 7 between the Devils and Ducks.

The game peaked in the 10PM hour with a huge 9.04 million viewers watching the Cup being awarded to Sidney Crosby’s Penguins, and a 3.7/12 among Adults 18-49. The game’s lowest point was the 8-8:30 PM half-hour, where the game drew 5.78 million viewers and a 2.2/9 in the demo.

Regardless, the NHL brass will look at this as one of those watershed moments for hockey, where more people have watched a game than in years. When the CBC numbers get added in, it is likely the game will cross the 10 million mark, making it the first hockey game since the 2002 Gold Medal Match between the U.S. and Canada to do so.

Congratulations to the Penguins on their Championship. The NHL will likely be pimping it for decades."

Wonder how it would have done if it wasn't on a Friday night (generally Friday and Saturday nights hurt ratings)

I realize that, but the Craig Adams thing threw me off because I swore Cam got it before Craig did in '06.

Upon reviewing the video, I was wrong.

Keep in the mind that the amount of open net looks very different to the puck, the shooter, and the TV camera.

^Yeah but if you look at the positioning of your goalie to Flury its not the same. Linstrom looks to have 2 places to shoot granted they are difficult shots but he still had room

Hurray Pens and Suck it Hossa should have stayed 1 more year

You can't look at that freeze frame. Lidstrom shot where he had space. Before the puck reached the net, that space was taken by Fleury who had desperately thrown himself across the crease.

^Yeah I looked at how his body position is and the fact that he was coming across the crease.
That said there still prob 2 places to shoot. But to give credit its a hard shot and good body position by Flury.

There's also the matter of depth. Fleury is almost on top of the crease when he moves over, which also decreases how much net the puck can see.

every time i see the replay of the final save I think of a secret service dude flinging himself in front of a shooter...it was that "throw your body flat across and hope you stop it" kind of action

i thought the Red Wings had a bit of class but seeing them whine about Sid missing a few handshakes and trying to characterize it as a 'snub' is a joke. Tough to lose I guess when you believe you're entitled to the Cup. Losers.

Yeah, this has been really bizarre. Usually it's the fans who bring up stupid stuff like this, and the players say something reasonable like "i don't care about that, he won the Cup, we didn't do our job." I really can't believe that Zetterberg is doing it. They left the ice before shaking Sid's hand, I don't know how that's his fault. Part of their own team stayed out there, and Sid shook hands with them, why did they leave? Last year he waited around while the Wings celebrated, but they didn't return the favor, and somehow he did something wrong?

It really must be a sense of entitlement. Don't know what else it could be.

update on the ratings for game 7:

Quote :
"Game 7 most-watched contest since '73

NEW YORK -- Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals is the most-watched NHL game in 36 years.

The Pittsburgh Penguins' championship-clinching 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on NBC on Friday night averaged 8 million viewers. The network said Monday that's the most since Game 6 of the 1973 Stanley Cup finals between Montreal and Chicago.

Game 7 earned a 4.3 rating and 8 share. It was the highest rating for a series-ending game since Game 7 of the 2003 Anaheim-New Jersey series.

The rating is the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program, while the share is the percentage of all TVs in use at the time."

so are we seeing the beginning stages of a full on renaissance?

ok my co-workers son was at Mario Lemieux's party at his mansion with the team & friends, and obviously the cup.

the pictures are absolutely ridiculous...i'm trying to get her to forward me the email with them (cuz her son said not to spread the pictures), but the pics are of the cup swimming in Mario's pool with the team, filled with Crystal, and Malkin pretending its a giant donger

This is one of the worst things I have ever seen. It's one of those things where it's so bad you are embarrassed just to be watching it. If this is how it's gonna be, they just need to stop doing awards shows. I can't imagine it getting much worse than this.
