I'm not familiar with the prices these days for base Caymans, however the Cayman S, besides having a larger engine with an additional 50 hp, also comes with significantly larger brakes and a manual transmission with 6 speeds instead of 5 (though I believe the 6 speed transmission was available as an option all years on the base model). There are some other differences (17 instead of 18/19" wheels) but those are the biggest differences.

I really like the 987 manual/981PDK Cayman S’, on the other hand a base 987 Cayman is a pretty big disappointment as a drivers car. It is comfortable and feels pretty solid if unsubstantial. If you prefer a more comfortable car, somewhat cheaper maintenance (tires/brakes) -in exchange for some driving pleasure/performance- it could be the ticket. I’m sure a base Cayman is still head and shoulders above something like a base 3 series from a driving dynamics perspective, which itself is much better than say a Camry. Drive them both if you’re unsure.

I've never driven the cayman S but a Track pack 370z drove better than a base cayman to me (and was purchased cheaper)

In conclusion nissan makes some junk but i wouldn't pay P car tax on a car that performs like a base cayman.

That's my fear exactly - thanks for the information. Onward with the search for a 335xi, deal on a cayman, s4, or the like.

""Honestly a 4cyl doesnt ever belong in a porsche, I mean why would people pay all that money to hear a 4cyl lawnmower ..."

This is, unedited, the first comment on my first Instagram post from my test drive of the new 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster."

Quote :
"Remember when the Boxster was a slow but fun car? Those days are over. The standard Boxster, equipped with the optional PDK dual-clutch gearbox and Sport Chrono, will hit 60 mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds. The Boxster S, when similarly equipped, will do it in four flat on the way to a 12.5-second quarter mile and a top speed of 178 mph. On a Portugese Air Force base on a cool spring day, I ran a 157-mph standing mile in the Boxster S and a 142-mph standing mile in the base car. These numbers are approximately on par with last generation's Carrera S and Carrera, respectively. While we're on the subject of numbers, let's talk Nordschleife times. The new Boxster S, equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management, PDK, Ceramic Brakes, and Sport Chrono, ran a 7:42 lap around the Nurburgring. That was good enough to tie a Walter Rohrl-driven 997 GT3 and a 2005 Pagani Zonda S while also scrubbing 16 seconds off the previous-generation Boxster S's best time. "

^Nobody doubted that the refreshed 4 cylinder 718 would be faster than the previous car. But people don't buy Porsches just for outright speed. If that was the goal they'd all drive Corvettes. $80k car that sounds like a Subaru? No thanks.

New 718 Cayman has been introduced.

Meh.

Only interesting thing is that Porsche has restructured the hierarchy of the Boxster & Cayman. The Boxster now costs $2-3000 more than the Cayman, and for the first time ever they both have identical power output from their engines.

Oh, and there will be a 2nd generation of the GT4, equipped with a flat 6 engine (if that tells you anything about what Porsche thinks about their own turbo 4s...)

a manual transmission on a track performance oriented car in 2016 is the joke. they ruined the original gt4 with it, now it looks like I can buy a proper one and so I shall.

you're retarded. The GT4 was/is a huge success partially BECAUSE it has a traditional manual transmission and the GT3 doesn't.

Furthermore, the next GT3 is going to be available with a traditional manual transmission again.

I like the PDK a lot, but calling a manual transmission “track car” a joke is... funny?

I drive on track because I enjoy it. I am not alone in that, hence the strong sales of the manual GT4.

hold on guys, I'll get right back to this conversation, I'm in the middle of this visceral experience, shoveling coal into my furnace. Hopefully I don't forget to wind my watch and lose track of time

maybe I can pen you some written correspondence if I forget? what are your addresses? I'll need to go pick up some stamps on the way home from the market.

you're right, I should take a camry to the track. A faster vehicle is completely unrelated to enjoyment of an untimed event

I enjoy the precision and driving feel, as its closer to a bike. I also plan on doing timed events. The point by shit isn't fun

Here’s the thing,

When I want to warm up, I turn up the heat from my Nest app on the phone.
Wehn I want to sit by the fire, I throw in logs into the fire place. Sometimes these are logs I chopped!

When I need to tell my sister what time my flight is arriving, I’ll email her.
When I want to wish her a happy birthday, I’ll hand write the note.

Your Camry is not more fun on track because it’s slower. It’s not fun because it sucks as a driver’s car.

It must blow your mind that I enjoy tracking my MINI Cooper S, and chose to take it to VIR twice
when I had a fantastic GT3 -but I had done 5 events in it there, and wanted to change it for a
couple of events. Incomprehensible?

well, I have no desire to sit by a fire, write a letter, or row gears. surely you guys see how slippery this slope of "involvement" is and how history doesn't favor holding on to the "good old days." why don't you all pine over air cooled porsches, with unassisted brakes and manual steering? what's with these pussy synchros? match that shit yourself! you aren't interested in these things because we can all agree the newer tech is substantially better. it's cool, we're all old, you're just transitioning into crotchety old men a bit more vocally.

There’s no slippery slope for me. I am happy with ABS, don’t want traction/stability control.
I like fuel injection as well, but I don’t want electronic suspension control. It’s cool though,
you can have your PDK. Variety is the spice of life!

I'd be more than happy to own my Cayman if it were lacking power steering. I think it would be an improvement, but not to the point that I'd retrofit such a system.

Honestly, the manual shifter in my Cayman is the worst shifter I've ever owned. It's far inferior to that of an S2000 (obviously), inferior to my BRZ's, and even worse than the shifter of my GS-R. I also have difficulty engaging the clutch smoothly sometimes - something I never had a problem with any other cars I've owned. I partially blame the DBW throttle connection, it's a bit more numb than the DBW throttle of the the S2000 & BRZ, as well as mechanical connection of my GSR. Sport mode helps greatly to "tighten things up" but is horrible for stop/go traffic when commuting. (though I could probably get used to it if it were on all the time, but this requires pressing the Sport button every time I start the car - annoying).

I bought my car used so some of this may be a result of some hard use by a previous owner, I dunno (car was previously tracked). However, if I did buy a newer Cayman I would seriously consider buying one with PDK. If my Cayman's shifter was as good as that of an S2000, however, the thought would never cross my mind.

But to call the Cayman GT4 ruined b/c of it's transmission choice is ludicrous. By all accounts it's shifter is a joy to row.

I’ve experience with “the best” of the set ups. I’ve driven several 991 GT3s, spent hours in a GTR, etc.
I’ve also driven the earlier and more crude systems including getting all shades of sideways at Road
Atlanta in my own e36 when I forgot to turn off traction control...

It boils down to preference. I don’t mind the modern, well executed systems as much, but I still
really enjoy a COMPLETELY analog car. I prefer a well executed ABS system or drive by wire. I’m
actually somewhat fond of the Race Logic adjustable traction control system in my e36. The key is
how these systems operate. The newer systems may be less intrusive, more transparent, etc. but
if they make the car do something different than what my inputs call for, or they add another layer
between my controls and the output, I generally am not a fan. The Race Logic system does not look
at steering angle, it only reduces engine output to keep the rear wheel to front wheel speed difference
to a set level, and only under power, kind of neat.

RE: Cayman shifter. They’re somewhat rubbery, but the magic is in what happens under load. Since
the shifter is cable based, and anchored to the engine on one side and the shifter itself on the other,
the shifter feel, and gate location does not change. This is perhaps not a big deal in a car like the BRZ
(skinny tires, low power), or the S2000, but it becomes comparatively more important as you start
making more power, or get a more capable car. That said, you could remove some vagueness with
better cables, or shifter assembly itself. The pivot points are plastic, and they wear. Especially if
somebody has rested their arm on the shifter for example.

Exactly!

And just a couple of months ago they released the 911 R which is basically a GT3 with a manual.

P.S. The only V12 available on the market with a manual is... an ASTON MARTIN! And they made it exactly because of the demand.

I linked that 987 to TKE a couple days ago. I'm partly sad that it's 2.7 and not the S. I drove the 2.7 and was underwhelmed by the power. I would regret not spending a couple thousand more and wait for the right S model to show up. That said, looks well sorted out and should still be a hoot to drive.

Same...I'm coming from a black M Coupe after telling myself I'd never buy a black sports car again (annoying to keep clean given my work/home parking situations). That said, for the price with a little wiggle, it's low mileage and appears to be thoughtfully maintained.

Yeah that's extremely impressive. I commented as below elsewhere on the interwebs:

So a baby Lambo is quicker than so-called "hypercars" which are easily triple the price of this car and have 50+% more power?! That's impressive.

How come Ferrari never really officially announces their times on that track? Why isn't the F12 tdf or the 488 GTB approaching those times? Does anybody even know their times?

And for a Porsche fanboi, that's so odd that you did not comment at all on the Panamera Sport Turismo!!!

Well Ferrari has never run the LaFerrari there, and McLaren never disclosed what the P1 ran there. And Koenigsegg's Agera 1:1 never ran any record attempts because that was when the 'Ring exacted speed limits through a few sections (after the death from a race).

If it were my money I'd put it on the McLaren P1.

Yeah, all those cars. I would figure that the C6 ZR1, C7 Z06, Viper ACR, would be in ballpark, too...especially with all tires being equal.

Are there true production Ultimas? Do Radicals count? What about some of the wilder Noble or Zonda variants?

If you count the Radical, then the Radical has the record.

The 5th gen Viper ACR hasn't run at the 'Ring (yet). I'd imagine it would be under 7 minutes, if not take the record outright. The C6 ZR1 has run there, C7 Z06 I don't believe so.
