I always figured you'd train them here on the east coast and then take them out west when they have the basics down pat.

In the meantime, they get a week at Grandma and Grandpa's every winter!!!!!

I met this cougar at Jackson Hole last year who said it was totally acceptable at her office to take "powder days" when it snowed.

Just booked trip to Tahoe! Learned at Killington last year, will be my first trip anywhere else.

Question for anyone who has any light to shed:

Was wondering if anyone has had any experience or knowledge on the neck braces that a few people are starting to wear. They are made for Motocross riders primarily, but it looks like all kinds of different riders are starting to pick them up.

I'm not doing crazy jumps or anything myself, but I did have surgery on my neck years ago so I'm a bit more unstable than most people. The biggest issue for me would be having my head pushed forward with a huge amount of force. (These braces look like they can help with that)

Anyways, there isn't a whole lot of information out there on the web about snowboarders using these, just that they are sometimes advertised as that being a possibility. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

My questions would be:

- Do they work?
- Would their effectiveness be reduced due to not wearing a full helmet and just a regular snow helmet?
- How much movement is taken away, and is that movement important for boarding?

No experience with them, but my guesses, Yes, Yes, a lot and Yes. (when snowboarding you almost always have your head turned)

If you're not going fast and no jumps and no tree runs, and snowboarding on powder, I really don't see a need for it.

But if you've had surgery on your neck, I'd want to take care of it too.

can't wait to start the saturday trips to wintergreen. looks like they kick off the season around 12/10. Hopefully there'll be some good snowfalls this year so we don't have to wait several weeks for all the slopes to open up. Otherwise ill be forced to splurge on a weekend up to snowshoe just to get some decent boarding in.

ooh! I never saw this thread before...

Me and my husband are giving snowboarding a shot this year, as we now live so close to the NE mountains. We already got our gear for the season, and are just trying to find a small place to get some lessons before we take a longer trip up to Vermont. Anybody here ski/ride in the new york area?

looks like my trips this year will be Snowshoe (as always) and Summit County out in CO. Looks like that trip will be Keystone, Vail & Aspen (I realize it's a far drive).

^^^^Yea you could go to hunter mountain in NY. Easy to day trips


VT slopes really arent all that challenging if you are just beginning. Mt Snow or Stratton Mtn have a lot of easy to intermediate slopes good for learning. Both arent that far away <5hrs

I travel a lot for work to CT. Whenever I go during the winter I pack my skis with me. I'm not sure how close you are to western MA, but Jiminy Peak is a pretty good place to go. They have a lot of green/blue runs, some of the runs have a pretty good length to them. If you sign up for their e-coupons they have discount days were you can ski 8 hours for $26.

I can't wait for the season to get started. I saw where Snowshoe got their first snowfall of the year back in early October. I'm trying to get the wife better at skiing so we can take a trip out west.

If you live in the NYC area there are numerous ski shops that run single day bus trips up to Okemo, Stratton and a few others. Definitely worth it, however it'll consume your whole weekend (you have to get very very early to catch the bus).

hehe we actually decided a few weeks ago that Stratton would be where we spend our long weekend.

We were looking at mt peter or hunter mt for our lessons, just because they are so close and so small (thus hopefully less people). Mountain creek is also really close to us, but I've heard the slopes get ridiculously crowded there.
