His non-threating demeanor appealed to my latent racism
Also explains why I disliked Adonal Foyle

Long but good article. Like this at the end
Quote : | "After two years away from basketball, Gillispie may finally be nearing a return to the game. His name continues to surface for potential coaching vacancies. A group of Texas Tech students have even printed T-shirts and started a website http://www.getgillispie.com to try to sway administrators as they search for a replacement for Pat Knight, who was fired Monday.
The buzz didn’t stop in Lubbock.
The Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and San Antonio Express News have all published columns in support of Gillispie’s hiring at Texas Tech, which probably won’t be the only school interested in his services.
“Sometimes schools take risks when they hire a coach,” [Bill] Self said. “But the school that hires Billy won’t be taking a risk at all.”
Gillispie refuses to discuss potential destinations, saying instead how painful it is to watch coaches lose their jobs. But when the opportunity comes to get back to the sidelines, he’ll be ready.
“Whoever it is will be satisfied in a very short time period,” Gillispie said. “It’s hard for me to imagine being any hungrier or more passionate at this point.”

that sounds like it would be an awesome hire. If his competitive spirit is that high then it almost would be a boon for our program in that we play UNC and Duke twice a year. 3/10/2011 7:31:45 AM |

^^ he didn't win a NC. And him being an alcoholic probably had something to do with it.
I hear he's currently coaching 8th grade basketball. If he manages to make it here for 4 years he can get those kids to come here! 3/10/2011 7:51:12 AM |

Mmmm...not quite. He only had a couple years at Kentucky, but he didn't do well in those two years. He recruited well (not quite as good as Calipari), but his final year at Kentucky was pretty shitty (by Kentucky standards...they went to the NIT).
If you're looking at Gillispie's resume, you kind of want to forget about his stint at Kentucky, because it was a disaster. Before that, he was one of the hottest commodities on the market. There were a lot of State fans wanting him during our coaching search, but I don't know if there was any serious interest on either side because he had only been at TA&M for one year (but had done well in that one year...and also done well at UTEP before that).

^ i dont get why BG's career at UK is considered a "disaster."
He was there for two years, and his first year he was named SEC co-coach of the year. His first year he recruited three 5 stars (Orton, Patterson) and five 4 stars. Had a 12-4 conference record
Year 2, they finished 8–8 record in conference and 22–14 overall. Had the 4 seed in NIT
Not breaking any records, especially by UK standards, but I think its unfair to say he failed at UK. The booze took over after year 2 so we never got to see a full recruiting cycle. 3/10/2011 9:24:41 AM |
