I will agree that this was probably the most exciting night of baseball that I've ever seen. Too bad the braves came out on the wrong side. As much as I like the cardinals, think I'm gonna have to pull for the rays now. Anyone except the phillies and yanks though please

WHY DO PEOPLE HATE THE PHILLIES?

the most losing team in baseball history finally realizes it's a big market team and has a handful of years of sustained success? you guys act like the braves didn't win their division for 25 years straight.

ha believe me dude, with all of the success the phillies have had the past 5 seasons it makes me realize what it must have been like to root for a team that had to deal with the braves for those 14 straight seasons and I get it. But that doesn't mean I have to pull for the phillies does it. They're my favorite team's biggest rival and a large market, why wouldn't I want to root for a small market team like the rays instead?

ALSO, save two of their three stallions in the rotation, this is primarily a homegrown team. hamels, utley, rollins, ruiz and howard were all drafted by the phillies.

and that's fine, but when you say things like "anyone but the yankees or phillies", i get the impression that it has more to do w/ money, except the phils don't have this track record of acquiring top free agents year after year.

one reason not to root for the rays is that no one fucking cares about the rays. their stadium was not even 90% full tonight. PLAYING THE YANKEES IN THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. how can you pull for that?

[Edited on September 29, 2011 at 1:33 AM. Reason : i mean really, it's nice when the rays do well, but if a team's going to win, i want it to have fans]

it has more to do with the anger I feel when the phillies beat the braves on a regular basis these past 5 seasons. but I am definitely in favor of a salary cap for MLB in general because, more-so than any other sport, there is so much discrepancy between the rich teams who are good and the poor teams who are bad, with just a handful of exceptions like the rays and brewers. so i guess money does have a little to do with it, you're kinda right

yeah it's definitely shitty that they don't have fans who turn out, it's unfortunate because they deserve to. Not their fault that they've played well the past few seasons and still nobody in tampa seems to care, that's just a result of a really bad market for their product. Anywhere else and that team would have fans coming in droves

had to get my awesome message board laugh at the red sox and braves bandwagoners... very choketastic night last night that i enjoyed.

did not enjoy however, the rangers winning home field and more importantly just the 2nd place seed and now my tigers have to get pummeled by the yankees

this is literally the stupidest thing i've ever heard

screw the rays! their new ownership completely turned the laughing stock of MLB around in 3 short years! they've turned the AL east on its head and made the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years! they just made one of the most historic playoff runs we will ever see in the month of september! they make smart trades and draft well! there's literally nothing to not like about them!

the rays have plenty of fans. it's just that their stadium is in a really shitty part of town in st. petersburg and is incredibly difficult to get to and is a really terrible place to see a baseball game. it's a hassle for people to go there on a tuesday night. the bridge that connects st. pete and tampa bay gets extremely congested and takes forever to cross on gamedays, and a ton of rays fans are in suburbs north of tampa bay. tropicana field is what is holding that team back from an attendance perpective, not a fanbase that doesn't care. they've tried several times to move to a new stadium closer to where fans actually live, but they've had no luck. the fact that the tampa/st. pete area was one of the hardest hit by the recession doesn't help things either when you're trying to get a stadium built.

read the extra 2% by jonah keri. this is an extremely likable team. keep the stupid down, please.

Wow simonn posted a lot of dumb in this thread after I went to sleep last night. Let's go down the list:

Quote :
"WHY DO PEOPLE HATE THE PHILLIES?"

I just hate some of their players like Victorino and Rollins and now Pence (spaz). Overall though winning breed hate.

Quote :
"ALSO, save two of their three stallions in the rotation, this is primarily a homegrown team. hamels, utley, rollins, ruiz and howard were all drafted by the phillies."

You forgot Oswalt as I assume you meant Lee and Halladay in your 1st sentence here. Also you forgot Pence, Ibanez, Polanco, Victorino, Lidge, and Blanton are all not homegrown talent.

The nucleus (Utley, Howard, Hamels, Rollins, Madsen) of the team is homegrown so I'll give them credit there. They have also brought up some talent from the farm the last couple years like Worley, Brown, Mayberry, Bastardo that are/will be good in the near future.

What nation wide TV channel is that? I hope to God you are not implying TBS because if you are you haven't watched baseball since about 2005. And as for Ted Tuner - LO fucking L. Braves have not been owned by Turner in a decade. They were sold when Turner decided to turn his fortune into AOL stock.

Braves have been owned by media corporations ever since and their payroll has continued to shrink. Atlanta spends nowhere near the money the Phils do now. I wish they did, but they don't and won't unless they get back under private management.

I feel cheated now for trying to have a civilized baseball conversation with simonn, because it is obvious now he knows absolutely nothing about baseball except what maybe happened a decade ago and philadelphia's handful of current homegrown players. Go do some research ass fuck before you say shit that makes you sound like an idiot

this is kind of true, i used to watch a lot of baseball, and then didn't for a long time, so uhm... yeah.

edit: just to be clear, i got back into baseball when i came to state and started going to state baseball games. not when the phils became amazing... although it did kind of coincide.

^^ the rays have plenty of fans. It's the location of the stadium that kills their attendance. It's too far from the suburbs where a lot of the area's fans live, and they're on the hook for the trop's mortgage for a long time due to bad decisions by the previous owner. They've tried several times to get approval for a new stadium, but it's been really hard since the Tampa/st. Pete area got ravaged by the recession

Uh, I'm a fan of the Rays, and it's because we've held Bulls season tickets since the dawn of time. Not trying to respond to Slave Famous' troll, but it's a shame a lot of people around here aren't Rays fans. They have direct ties to the Triangle. And seriously, it's like none of you are used to cheering for a failing team? But maybe that's it; they've been rather successful in the current years. Maybe that's what you're not used to....
