Never one to blame the refs, but Earl Walton:

I'd really like to see DeThaey and TBDV get in some over Howell if he's gonna be that ineffective. Even in better shape he looks like he gets gassed way too quickly.

This. TDT looks good and Vandy would have at least altered shots.

Tough loss. I honestly think we're the better team but a few times we just shot ourselves in the foot and IU took advantage. At least we've still got a few OOC chances to get some quality wins.

I think it's pretty big of Howell to acknowledge publicly that he didn't play well. Hopefully he learns from it and plays better in the future. He is normally a good FT shooter (~80%) and those three that he missed were huge. Also he just lost the handle on the fast break, which happens to even the best players every now and then. We get those 5 points, and maybe the game turns out differently.

^^^^Yeah that guy, Olidapo (I think), blew by him on a few occasions in the 2nd half. After some game recently, maybe the Elon game, Hahn and Haynes were talking about how much of a lock-down defender CJW is becoming. I don't see it.

And ^, agreed. Howell didn't play his best game. But he's a good player and has proven that this season. Hopefully he learn from it and improve.

CJ Williams sucks as a lockdown defender. I was pissed when Hahn and Haynes were talking after that other game about how he was so great on defense. He got exposed tonight and the possessions where he was burned two or three times in a row did is in

On 22 attempts...

He shot 61% last year, 57% the year before

Better conditioning should help, but he's not gonna stay at 80% all year

CJW is a good defender for shooters, more so than guys that put the ball on the floor and drive to the rim.

Home non conference game hurts. Hurts more when you're up 7 and have a bunch of chances to increase the lead. Then Scott Wood for the second time getting an intentional foul.

But its a 29 point improvement over last year. Need 2 of the next 3 (Stanford, Cuse, and St Bonnie's)

TBDV and de Thaey needed PT in this game, if only to increase our depth and get fresher legs on the court. We looked totally gassed late in the game. It killed our D and hurt our fight on offense as well.

just got home from the game (and other things).. were either of those fouls on wood (intentional and the one that fouled him out) legit? obviously i didn't see replays, the breakaway looked like a pretty normal reach in, and the block from behind the ball came out pretty solidly but he could have gotten him too

I'm not as upset as I thought I would be. It was fun to watch up until the last couple minutes, and I still think we were the better team. But Indiana was darn good, too. Really good/fun game despite the refs.

^No, they weren't legit. There's another one that the crowd was upset about, but I watched it in slow motion, and he did get the guy's arm. There was at least one other that was bullshit, and I can't remember the fifth.

Vandenberg has a shoulder injury and was only going to play if we needed him, per Gottfried in the pregame show.

just got home:

-Indiana played about as perfect a first six minutes as you'd ever want, they scored 24 points in 6 minutes, that's 160 points/game pace; that said, our transition down the floor for defense was horrible, mostly in this six minute stretch but it was the case later on in the game as well where they'd get a shot and make a bucket before their shot clock got below 25.

-After that point N.C. State finally got their heads in gear, played some defense, and Indiana was having a rougher go of it not making as many shots: 24 points in first 6 minutes, 16 points in next 14 minutes.

-Second half was kinda even although State was getting in the lead. We had great free throw shooting throughout the game and then at some point we started missing free throws, missing easy layups, let Indiana back in the game, and our frontline defense underneath went incredibly soft and they were making layups to come back in. Just a complete choke on both ends of the floor.

-Harsh call on the intentional but it was just an incredibly dumb play by Wood. What the hell was he intending to do? The guy had a break, you don't dive to the floor before you get to the paint acting as if you're tripping the guy, you try to hit the ball as he puts it up expecting a foul to come. I joked with my dad that it was about as blatant as Pitkanen wrapping up a player last night on a breakaway in the hockey game that led to the penalty shot. God bless Scott Wood, but you're a junior so you've been at this awhile, why don't you go learn to do something besides shoot three pointers and free throws, but I guess there's a reason why IU and Purdue didn't recruit the local kid and that's because he's a one-dimensional player.

We got a way different version at home.

It was obviously a foul, but it did not look like diving or tripping. It was a reach-in from behind with one arm. And then a reach-in with the other. And I suspect the guy who blew the whistle thought Wood was trying to hug him up.

[Edited on November 30, 2011 at 11:18 PM. Reason : But he wasn't. And the dumbest part was the call, not his play.]

lol at blaming refs. They gave us plenty of chances to put the game away at the line. And I was at the game so I didn't have benefit of a replay but it sure looked like we got lucky with that goaltend no-call.

Questionable shot selection, missing shots around the rim, missed free throws - that's why we lost

Johnson has got to start hitting those 3's, but I really like what I see when he's on the floor. He's always pushing the ball, rarely makes a dumb play, and plays really aggressive on-ball defense. I think we need to get him and Brown on the court more together. A lot more.

Harris will be a good player, but he's thinking too much out there right now. We need TDT to steal all of his minutes. Not sure why Harris got the nod over him tonight, but hopefully that changes soon. TDT hussles, rebounds, and supposedly shoots well. Not sure what Harris does well yet.

Also, I know they were guarding the hell out of Wood the 2nd half, but we've got to get him some more shots. It's damn near automatic 3 points when he squares up. The guards really need to look for him on the break more.

Not too disappointed overall. Gotta give credit to Indiana ... they're a solid, well-coached team. Their PG seemed like a little bitch though ... constantly bitching at teammates

The first three bits is just basketball analysis. If you have an issue with it, say what it is and detail it.

On Wood, I'm just being honest. Hey, our team makes way too many borderline passes as everyone saw tonight, a lot of them get intercepted and ran back. First off (team), don't make those passes to begin with. Second, why the f*ck do you even put your arm in there when you're clearly beat by a couple bodylengths after such a play? It's not like even if Wood got the ball most any ref would not give the attacking player the call because it's a blatant reach-in where you're going around the player to get the ball he's dribbling in front of him. And then Wood makes it worse and gets the intentional called on him making a meal of the thing by going down to the floor acting as if he's just trying to flag the player down. If you're beat just foul him on the shot so he can't make it because at that point it's clear you're going for the ball: play smart defense. It's not even just Wood, we're in the last few minutes of the game and Zeller had a couple unchallenged two footers for easy scores. Where's the interior D?

You can't be a starter in this league with atrocious defense and poor decision making on top of it and expect your team to have success. He's the best we got though, so hopefully he gets better.

Both squads are young, but talented. The difference being that Tom Crean has been at IU for 3 years and his older players are more used to his system. We on the other hand have all of our players learning a new system. It's only the 7th game for these guys running Gottfried's system. I hope we get a rematch next year as I think our freshman class will be better than theirs, which could prove to be the difference. Purvis can get to the rim with ease, Warren can provide more outside shooting for us than just Wood, and Lewis will be a fine back-up for Brown.

We did not need to lose this game. We were way more talented than them, but they beat us by playing smarter basketball.

As usual, perimeter defense sucks balls. Been a problem all year. Been a problem for years. You put teams away with defense, and we just let them right back in when we had the 7 point lead. That's an immature team, even though we have our fair share of upperclassmen.

We will be a much better team when CJ Williams is gone. He sucks balls on defense. He is a tweener who is too slow too defend a guard and too small to defend someone bigger. We should have had AJ defending their small guard, sliding Brown over to defend #4 who got all those drives on Williams. Brown could also have pressured their guard more.

Painter and Howell still have serious problems finishing inside. Shots that should be dunks turn out to be really hurried prayers inside.

We folded at the end, there, as well. Too many turnovers and not enough effective shots. We don't have anyone who exudes confidence in end-of-game situations. Brown is not there, yet. Howell's last few shots tell is about him.
