Adoring this policy and pushing the senate (if Dems win, of course) to adopt would greatly help Sanders be an effective president.

Also you're kidding yourself if you think Dems wouldn't mostly fall in line behind a Sanders presidency.

I got this text today:

Quote :
"This is (name) with Bernie. He just said he's running for PRESIDENT and asked us to text previous supporters to ask if they're in. Are you?"

I said:
Quote :
"I'm not sure yet."

He said:
Quote :
"Ok, I understand and thanks for letting me know! Have a great day."

Surefire way to NOT earn my vote is not take the time to try to convince me when clearly I'm at least open to it. That's not Bernie's fault of course, but come on guy.

Bad response, but it's not like they're personalizing them. It's some low level aide just clicking a button or checkbox.

I actually think Bernie’s response was about as perfect, politically, he could have done. It was measured and careful not to imply anything.

Between this and his forceful acknowledgment about some of the complaints about his campaigns mistreatment of women and minorities I think he has had an excellent roll out for 2020.

That whole faction is just bizarre. They completely take away any Trump agency. All his shitty decisions are simply reactions to MSNBC. They force him to increase the drone war, put pressure on Venezuela, etc. I guess it’s a defense mechanism because a lot of these same people were writing “a left defense for trump” pieces in 2016?

Also, saw a sweet chryon from FNC last night. Laura Ingraham and Glenn Greenwald split screen with chryon that read “Putin Collusion with Nancy Pelosi.”

YES!!!
Warren
Buttigieg
Yang

Sure
Sanders
Booker
Castro

Eh...ok fine
Beto
Biden
Klobuchar
Gillibrand

No thanks (but still better than Trump)
Harris
Gabbard

And everyone else on the officially declared list I don't know enough about to place them yet.

"how we paying for that" is generally a bad faith question coming from a conservative considering all the deficit spending and tax breaks they love when in power....

BUT universal basic income would carve out a chunk of the current social safety net as it is meant to act as that safety net, so there is a chunk that already exists. UBI would also replace alot of the red tape involved in applying for some of those programs, so there is a lesser but non negligible chunk. Then, half the country would turn around and pay at least 20% of that back in taxes.

Finally, tax the rich, tax wealth, tax Bezos.

^This. Exactly this.

I am open to Harris convincing me she's actually changed her views, and the same for Gabbard, but not enough has been done yet and either will have an easier time convincing me 4-to-8 years down the road when more time has passed between the terrible things they've advocated for and actually doing things in Congress to go the other way.

I still need to see some more out of him, particularly on trade, but so far I like him. He's handling his appearances well and is probably the "smartest" candidate, for whatever that's worth; but more importantly he has some foreign policy basis and isn't a thousand years old.

I think I'd still take Warren to actually be President over anyone else so far, but there's that pesky issue of actually having to win a general election campaign against the current occupant of the WH. I really can't say I super like anyone at the moment to both run against Trump and actually be President. I think a long primary where the winner isn't known until late in the Spring of 2020 would actually be beneficial at this point. Gotta keep the right wing smear machine unable to focus on a single candidate for as long as possible.

^^why respond if you're just gonna bs? I asked grumpy not you.

But fine, I can bs too. Warren was a professor at Harvard, Buttigieg was just a student. Sounds like Warren is the smartest now.

Booker was also a Rhodes scholar and got his doctorate from Yale, Buttigieg only has a bachelor's from Harvard, oa I guess Booker beats him too.

Kamala Harris has a doctorate and passed the bar. Has Buttigieg ever passed the bar?

^^Warren is as far from Trump as one can get. A woman who focuses on logic and knowledge (as opposed to a man who relies on emotion and rhetoric). We won't beat Trump at his own game, so let's go with the real anti-Trump.

It's in quotes because of course it's a fairly ridiculous thing to say; there's no objective standard for "smart" and extremely high intelligence is perhaps not all that important or even necessarily desirable in a president (or, crucial distinction, a candidate that we want to win).

So I'll answer your question, but I'm not really interested in arguing the particulars, since I'm freely admitting that the whole concept is pretty ill defined.

I suppose what speaks to me is his academic background in conjunction with the range of his studies and experiences, especially in such a young person. As you say, many of the other candidates have strong educational bona fides, but my sense is their experience is relatively narrow. Harris and Warren have basically always been lawyers. Booker has been a politician since right after law school. Buttigeig has worked in some capacity at every level of government, he has military experience, he has a more international perspective.

Having said that, again, I'm not interested in arguing whose candidate is smarter. Most of them after very smart, which is what matters. I like Buttigeig's kinds of smarts so much that I almost wish I could vote for him, but for now I think he has too many downsides.

I agree to a certain extent, but a good leader in any field needs those qualities. You need to be able to explain your ideas in a compelling manner.

At this point I like booker the least, which considering I was a big booker fan 2 years ago is a surprise to me.

I think any of the top candidates now can beat trump, not easily but it’s definitely doable. I don’t really have a clear favorite yet, also Pete buttogieg seems to have the most organized campaign based on ads I’ve been getting.

And warren by far has the strongest policy team and she seems to be targeting 2016 trump voters which I think is a really good strategy.
