I'll admit I didnt really like the loses to the woffords and wake forests of the world, but if thats what it takes to make a sweet 16 run I will take that every year. The problem will come when those loses keep us out of the tournament, but Gott has proven he knows how to schedule and get the wins he needs for us to make it so I cant complain.

but theres the rub..... its not the truth. he shouldnt be fired because we dropped a game to wake forest. especially since hes not the one playing it... the duke win, the nova game, unc... all proof that he can game plan appropriately. in the games we lost players didn't do what he told them to do.

^and not go all "well actually" but we did lead wisconsin by like 9 or 10 at half in our sweet 16 appearance under herb. although UNC would've been our elite 8 opponent IIRC so our chances of a final 4 that year were still not great i guess.

I think he's done a damn fine job of making mid-season adjustments and working hard to improve the defensive game. I also like that he's capitalizing on players like Leonard Freeman and Desmond Lee, who have played small, but significant roles in our tourney wins. I think this team is a team that wants the championship and can do it. But if Friday is their last game, then I can't say I'm disappointed in this season. That being said, Gott better not let them lose to Louisville.

We went from a national contender to a program that didn't do shit for the better part of 20-25 years other than being notable for being on the wrong end of games like the '03 ACC title game, the Wisconsin NCAA game, the Vanderbilt NCAA game, etc. We expect to be semi-relevant, not win title every single year.

National sportswriters/broadcasters (Dakick, Goodman, Doyle, etc.) go way out of their way to troll State fans so they can get hits on their 'stories' and mentions on Twitter.

I don't remember the exact stat (and this probably isn't the thread for this discussion, but oh well) but it was something like only 3 BCS/P5/whatever programs haven't done one of the following since 1990: BCS appearance in football, football conf championship, bball reg season conf championship, bball conference championship, final 4 appearance. And of course, we were one of the few (don't remember how many, definitely could be counted on one hand) who hadn't accomplished a single one of those feats in 20+ year time frame. Hell, we may have been the only P5 school to have not done any of that - again, don't remember exactly, but it was along those lines.

Point being...media folks can talk about delusional expectations all they want. But there are next to no other major programs that have suffered like we have over the last couple of decades across the two major revenue sports. So - are we really off our rocker to want more? Absolutely not

other than henderson, who hasn't played for us yet, if you asked me a week ago i'd say the only one who proved ineffective is dez, but after watching him play in the tourney...

Dez wasn't very good last year but he was a necessary part of a tourney team. One of the key reasons for our improvement is we essentially replaced him with Lacey

I mean one huge point in Gotts favor is Lee was 3rd on the team in minutes last year, and that team still made the tourney.

I was watching the Providence game the other night and they said "Tyler Harris, transfer from NC State." I had completely forgotten about him. Had to see him to remember who he was. We definitely came out just fine in that situation.

My point was more like...there's no reason why we can't have one good outlier year (conf champs, BCS bowl, whatever) over the course of 2+ decades. When every other P5 team has done so...are we stupid to reasonably believe we should be better? Iowa State has had higher highs in bball over the last two decades than us. Baylor. Fucking Baylor. Has had more football and bball success in the last 5 years than we've had in 2 decades. The point being - shitty programs turn things around...or at the very least catch lightning in a bottle for a season or two over a 2 decade span. We haven't. And we aren't a shitty program historically in bball.

There doesn't need to be a specific occurrence to make fans believe they can and should experience some level of national success/relevance In 20+ years. You have your power houses in every sport that are there year in and year out. But then you have your teams like Miami and FSU sneaking in and winning ACC bball titles. There's no reason we shouldnt expect that once in a couple decades.
