Anyone else want to give their input on reasons to go for a Cannon XSI over a Nikon D3000/5000 or any entry level Nikon SLR for that matter? Looks to me like the Cannon might be a better camera for the price if you look at features but the Nikon lenses look to be better and people seem to like nikon image quality over cannon. I don't need video but I do like the idea of transitioning with a live view LCD but thats not really that important.

I think mostly that's just personal opinion. I have the XSi and I really like it, but to decide I went to the store and tried both the Nikons and the Canons out. I'm not so sure there's going to be much of a difference in image quality in either entry level camera. You should really just try them out and see which one you like better. (size, menus, camera layout, etc).

you're not going to find any evidence of better image quality between similarly-priced entry-level models from canon and nikon (opinion, maybe, but no factual evidence)...the glass you use is what matters, and since that is determined by your budget, it's 6 of one and a half-dozen of the other

Go to camera store.

Hold both cameras.

Whichever feels better is the one you should buy. If you're shopping for entry level DSLR's, this is going to make more of a difference than anything else. You won't ever get better or learn if you don't use your camera, and being comfortable with it is conducive to more use.

I've held all 3 but no store has them with any batteries that don't die after 15 seconds so that kind of sucks. The D3000 feels really nice. They all have some features that are different/better/worse but thats just the marketing. I think I'll probably end up sticking with the Nikon when I do decide to take the plunge but we'll see what kinds of deals come up in the next few months.

Thanks for the input. Down the road, is there any difference between the lenses Nikon and Cannon make that are compatible with these cameras? I know neither have AF motors built in and I'm thinking Nikon may have better lenses anyway. Any validity to this? This is a question for way down the line I know but I don't want to regret buying b/c of problems trying to upgrade the lenses in the future.

not valid at all...unless you already have lenses, entry-level canon and nikon cameras and the first lenses you'll be buying are, for all intents and purposes, identical

it truly comes down to which camera you like better...be it the way it's designed, the menu structure, or the color

i picked up a knock-off gary fong puffer diffuser from meritline for $4 shipped...got it yesterday and i must say, for an amateur who doesn't want to spend the money on a proper diffuser, this thing is very cool and more than worth the $4

the puffer only comes with the white diffuser, i believe, but the knock-off comes with the blue, orange, and white





i'll post some unedited image comparisons later (they're on my camera, but i want to do a more consistent test before i post them)

My lens hood casts a shadow whenever the popup flash is used. No dice.

That certainly does seem like a solid 4 dollar investment. Definitely makes a HUGE difference.

Went out to Yellowstone for about two weeks earlier this month. Haven't had time to go through them all, cept for a few I specifically edited for my school projects. I'm pretty happy with the shot I took of the Grand Tetons with the Snake River, similar to the famous Ansel Adams shot of 1942.

instead of the rest which more or less look like this:

I'm headed down to Miami, Fl for 2 months for my commercial internship for school. With that, I'm still selling my 30D w/ grip for 450 to anyone here. I also have a Canon 1DmkII with basically a brand new shutter for 1100 if anyone is interested. I just have no need for these bodies anymore and would rather have the money in other gear.

50D came yesterday...big and awesome move from the XTi. A lot more versatility and being able to use an ISO at 800 and get decent shots will be fun.

OK, I'm still fairly new to this but I'm heading to Jamaica this weekend and thought it would be a good crash course. I've got the D40 and went to Wolf Camera to pickup some filters to try out. I got the Tristar Optics pack with a UV Filter and C-PL Filter for $30. Are these good for the price or are they junk? Any suggestions on the best methods to using them? Any other filters I should look into buying?

With filters you get what you pay for, so Tristar is bottom of the barrell.

But, using the CPL filter for affects is better than nothing. Use the CPL to take reflections off water and make blue skies blue-er. Screw it onto your lens and then rotate the front ring of the filter til you like what you see in the viewfinder.

The UV filter doesn't affect your picture much and is most useful as simply protection for the front element of your lens. Then on the other hand, your D40 kit lens isn't very expensive/high-quality to begin with, so putting a cheap UV filter on it certainly isn't going to help out your picture quality any.
