i dated a guy for a little while who lost the girl he loved a few months before i met him. she died in a car accident a few miles away from his house, after driving over two hours from greenville to hang out with him for the day. she was driving home.

i DO NOT recommend dating someone who has just lost the person they were in love with. you will always feel like you can't live up to the memory of that person. it is an awful feeling trying to compete with a ghost. if this guy you are talking about is young and his fiancee died recently, i would stay far far away. i can't even begin to describe how awful it was to be jealous of a 19 year old girl who had died in a car accident, i felt so guilty and like i was a horrible person, but it was like dating a guy who never stopped talking/thinking about his ex. i couldn't tell him to stop or tell him how i felt about the situation because it was such a sensitive subject. especially since i knew the girl and she was a genuinely beautiful person inside and out.

needless to say it didn't work out between us and he ended up marrying a girl he had known for about a week. i have talked to her many times and she says he still has not gotten over the girl who died. he probably never will.

that is just my experience, i know every situation is different but i would never put myself in that position again.

I feel really good about the marriage that Z and I are headed towards, and I love that we're on the same page about so many things, and that we have no illusions that neither life nor marriage will be easy, but I still worry about the future 15, 20, 40: will one of us end up horribly or chronically ill? Will we have a special needs or handicapped kid? What if one of us dies and we don't get to grow old together?

And then I have to stop and remind myself that there's no point in trying to be a control freak on a timetable of that magnitude
