from a confession on page 140:
Quote : | ""I have a friend who died from complications due to anorexia a year after graduating from high school. When we went on a spring break trip with her during our senior year, her mom sent all this food & told us to make sure she ate. We didn't take her mom very seriously, ate the food (more for us! ), and were amazed that all she ate was lettuce when we went out to eat. None of us ever thought she could possibly be anorexic. At that point, she wasn't abnormally skinny. I feel guilty sometimes though, like I should have done something. Paid more attention. Tried to get her to talk about it. Tried to talk to her mom about it. I don't know what my other friend thinks about it now; she moved to Chicago and I haven't talked to her in forever. Neither one of us kept in contact with her after graduation (I didn't keep in contact with anybody from high school). I feel horrible."" |
that really sucks to hear that but i think it's kind of shitty that the girl's mom was asking for you and your friend to have so much responsibility on her daughter. i don't know the whole story but did the mom ever get the girl into some sort of treatment or was she being treated at all? for the mom to have you guys kind of "watch" the girl is sad. and it's really sad that the girl couldn't get the proper help before this horrible disease took her life. i'm sorry friend. 10/20/2010 9:42:49 AM |

^It was Spring Break in high school. I'm thinking either (a) it was just beginning and either the mom didn't know how serious it was or it hadn't gotten that bad at that point and/or (b) it's high school spring break...she knows if she prevents her daughter from going it will have the opposite effect and make it even worse. She can't go with her on the Spring Break...so she does the best she can and asks her daughter's friends to look after her. At that point, what else are you going to do??
I would think (or at least hope) that she got more help and support from her family after that point. But there's not much you can do in that one situation other than keep your daughter from going on Spring Break. 10/20/2010 9:48:15 AM |

Oh yeah...so is she going to let him stick it in her butt...or is she going to strap one on and stick it in his pooper.... 10/20/2010 9:49:22 AM |

i 100% agree.
i had a sorority sister in college who had an eating disorder. friends tried to talk to her family asking them to please get her help but the family felt like there were little they could do but just ask us to watch her. it puts a lot of responsibility on someone and just like this person who posted the confession, a feeling of guilt that you couldn't help your friend is horrible.
when you're dealing with a 17 year old girl who wants to go on spring break, stopping her from going (like you mentioned) would have a negative affect. and i agree, i really hope the mother tried to help the daughter get treatment afterwards.10/20/2010 10:06:55 AM |

Quote : | "One of the things that's really important to me is gratitude, and appreciation for what one has; I like doing what most or my peers consider "going without". I've been so worse off before that I've never had a problem taking things for granted.
I just realized I've started taking a couple things for granted. Within the past 24 hours, I've had a couple reminders.
I've been helped out by someone who spends more in a time period on their dog's food than they are able to for themself. I take 1) money for the food I want 2) a bed 3) a well-functioning car for granted. I'm actually really proud and glad this person considers me a friend and (their words) "another version of myself". I wish I were half as awesome as they are. I'm glad I have such meaningful routes for repayment and showing gratitude.
I do not have to worry about paying for gas for my car, through a combination of factors. I had managed to forget/not realize how the cost of gas plays into lifestyle decisions. It's this one that REALLY horrifies me. How the fuck have I managed to take GASOLINE for granted???? " |

Woops had this one sitting for the weekend. Sent on Friday.
Quote : | "Last night I went out with some colleagues from work who were in town and we ended up going to a bar after going to the fair. One of my co-workers played wingman without my knowing, talking me up to a pretty hot girl (out of my league really). After some convincing I went over and talked with her and we hit it off pretty fast and well sharing a bunch in common and talked for quite awhile considering I left a group of about 10 friends (I'm the only one from the area so they wouldn't know where to go afterward). However at the end of the night, I kind of just walked away from her at the end of the night when we had to head home instead of attempting to pursue anything (even phone number). Why I did this I don't know, I mean, we were pretty into each other (so it seemed to me and my colleagues), but I at the time was not interested in pursuing something. Part of me wonders if this is because a friend was trying to set me up without any of my input (and had never wing manned for me before) and I took that as a shot or I'm just an idiot. I'm going with just an idiot for now. After we left the bar, I was given a bunch of shit from my colleagues about not closing the deal in any form, and that was quite deserving the more I think about it.
This morning I woke up hating myself as I really wish I would've gotten her number if nothing else. Now I'll probably never see her again and that sucks when I think about how much we shared in common. I know there are other fish in the sea, but when you've had several failed relationships in the past 3 years that have all had various levels of sucking in addition to traveling about 80% of the time, you try to not get your hopes up anymore. But last night they were for the duration of our conversation, before I froze for some unknown reason, but I guess live and learn. " |

I fucking hate it when people say "we're on a break"
It's just the stepping stone to breaking up -- and I think people who say they want to go on a break instead of just ending things need to man up and get it over with

i've seen people who have gone on breaks and then got back together and worked things out. sometimes it depends on the dynamics of the relationship. 10/25/2010 11:14:01 PM |
