Couple more photos taken playing around with some off camera flash.
We did some smoke shots too and bumped the saturation in photoshop. If you do the inscent pictures again keep the background black by blocking the light from the flash (use a 'barn door') and go with a rather large room so it does not get all smoky.

i found a d40 for $350 on clearance... worth it? i've had a couple of compacts and never really enjoyed them... we've been wanting a dslr, and from what i can tell, the d40 is a great entry level and a great value (even reviewed at $500/$600)... we really don't have the dough to splurge for anything more, but it seems we end up trying to upgrade our camera every few years.
question is, this camera is dated now right? but i can still get a good lifespan out of it i'm thinking...
just wanted some direct input rather than reading reviews on the intarweb 10/9/2009 10:11:36 PM |

yes, D40 is awesome. Specially for a first time dslr. It's all you really need. I enjoy it when my friend brings it over. It's really cut, but very functional, plus the 2nd curtain is actually electronic means that its one of very few ccd sensor chips that can sync with any kind of flash at high speed, so using it with a studio strobe at 1/2000th is plausible and really neat. No new camera that I know of can do this without dedicated speedlites.
If I was a nikon shooter, I'd keep the D40 in my bag with a D3 and D700. 10/9/2009 11:05:44 PM |

^^ get it, craigslist or ebay the kit lens for $75-100 and get the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S for $200. 10/9/2009 11:45:05 PM |

I got the D40 and am very happy with it as a first SLR, well digital. The kit lens is really good and will cover most of what you need. I've also heard great things about the 35mm f/1.8 and it is on my list of too gets.
The 55-200mm VR lens that is often bundled with it is good too if you need cheap telephoto.
If you want I can send you some pics I've taken with it. 10/10/2009 7:23:15 AM |

btw, I know plenty of pro shooters who still shoot on a regular basis with the Canon 1D classic, that's only 4mp. Good enough for an 8x10 or 11x14 print. 16x20 might be pushing it, but there are ways to do it. 10/10/2009 8:33:20 PM |

I was shooting downtown the other day and found this sweet sliver of light coming through an intersection. I grabbed a few shots as people walked through it. The light also bounced off the building and would eliminate any really harsh shadows on the people walking through it. Lucky find.
Shot with my 11-16 on monochrome with a Tiffen Orange-15 filter.

Cosco does a pretty good job and relatively inexpensive. Adorama and B&H both have their own printing service that does a decent job. For real pro level quality, you either have to go do a speciality lab or print yourself.10/12/2009 8:57:55 PM |

yeah now that I have the 35mm on my d40, pictures with the kit lens pale in comparison and I will probably never use it again. I didn't really think that the lens made such a difference, but it does.
the 55-200 VR is worth the money, too.10/14/2009 12:08:25 AM |

trust me, the kit lens that Nikon makes is like 3x better than the shitty one canon has. Although the 28-135 "kit lens" isn't a bad one. Its the pos $5 17-55; it makes crappy p&s cell phone camera's look good. 10/14/2009 12:27:29 AM |
