Why US v Blewett is the Obama Justice Department's greatest shame Explain the paradox that the US still jails thousands of African Americans on sentences it admits were unfair? It can't be done http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/jul/23/us-v-blewett-obama-justice-department-shame
Quote : | "Last month, President Obama quietly did something that should shake every American to the core. Seeking to enforce federal crack cocaine laws that have since been repealed, the Obama administration asked a federal appeals court to ensure that thousands of human beings, mostly poor and mostly black, remain locked in prison – even though everyone agrees that there is no justification for them to be there.
To understand Obama's decision and to understand why you have probably not heard about this, it is important to realize just how normalized rampant incarceration has become in our society. America now puts people in prisons at rates unparalleled in the modern world and unprecedented in American history. The US has 5% of the world's population and 25% of its prisoners." |

Because non Medicare/Medicaid spending is already the lowest its been in over 60 years and taxes are already the lowest they've been in decades
But more importantly, Republicans are using it to absolutely stonewall all legislation by being unapologetically obstructionist and this is something that must be stopped. 7/30/2013 10:07:51 AM |

Well I agree with that second point. But government spending is way way way too high. It would be a nice change if he actually did something to further reduce/eliminate the deficit. 7/30/2013 10:09:47 AM |

I realize they (GOP) don't wanna cut defense (which should be cut) but pretty much everything should be cut. Corn subsidies, welfare programs, healthcare spending, some foreign aid, govt services, entire government agencies (Homeland Security, i'm talking to you). The government's continual expansion isn't needed and is counter to most Americans' desires.

Agree with you on these, but neither party will cut them. As far as welfare and healthcare, I'll defer to dtownral's point.

Quote : | "Of course, that agreement set up the sequester. Remember the sequester? It's the indiscriminate slashing of government spending that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates is costing up to 1.6 million jobs. Yeah, that. Ever since I've read Confidence Men I knew about Obama's reliance on Wall Street insiders for fiscal policy direction. This recent rumor of Larry Summers being selected to succeed Bernanke further demonstrates this conflict of interests.
Here are some revelations from the book:
Quote : | "The most attention-getting material involves comments from Obama's economic team. For example, Lawrence Summers is quoted as saying to Budget Director Peter Orzag at a dinner that 'There's no adult in charge. Clinton would never have made these mistakes.' Former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker, in turn, describes the president as too reliant on Summers, smart, but not smart enough. Senior White House aide Pete Rouse wrote 'There is deep dissatisfaction within the economic team with what is perceived as Larry's imperious and heavy-handed direction of the economic policy process.' Suskind also tells us Geithner was working behind the scenes to neutralize Elizabeth Warren and prevent her being named to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - per bankers' demands. And then there's Christina Romer, former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, stating that she 'felt like a piece of meat' after being kept out of a meeting by Summers; further, she once threatened to walk out of a dinner with the president and outside economists after the president skipped over her when asking his guests for their recommendations." |
