my brother and i are going to the ymca together in the morning
i guess that is better than running outside cause if i run outside i have to wake up at like 6AM
but i can't run inside. i mean i can i just hate it. the track is fine but i think the track at this YMCA is weird. its not like separate its like around the weight room so too many people watching
why am i such a freak about the gym? 6/20/2010 9:26:33 PM |
NyM410 J-E-T-S 50084 Posts user info edit post |
Which YMCA do you go to in Raleigh? I'm not really a huge fan of the free weight area being open with the cardio area at the one on H'boro. I don't really know why but I'm just used to areas being separate at every gym I've been to in the past. I liked it before they changed it around more.
The track itself, which I never use since I hate running in circles, is around the new basketball courts though. 6/20/2010 9:31:03 PM |
khcadwal All American 35165 Posts user info edit post |
well right now i go to the one in N. Raleigh - Finley Y.
last time i was here and went (and they've made major changes to this one too) the track was around the weight area. but that was years ago.
at my Y in gboro the track goes around the basketball court, too. and i also hate running in circles but since my shins have been hurting i've been trying to switch between pavement and the track. at least sometimes there are cute boys playing basketball to keep me entertained
i don't really like cardio equipment (whoops). i hate both elliptical AND treadmills. i guess stationary bikes are ok but i'd rather ride the real one.
i'm terrified of both cardio and free weight areas though. i know no one is looking at me when i use stuff but i feel like they are. and not in a good way.
^ do you go to the Hillsb. Y? or another gym? when i move back i need to join and i don't know if i'm going to stick with the Y (probably) or change.

What are the rates at the hillsborough Y? 6/20/2010 9:59:22 PM |
NyM410 J-E-T-S 50084 Posts user info edit post |
Yes. I go to Alexander Y on H'boro. I really like it. Best overall gym I've been a member of and it's relatively cheap ($28/month). Having the good basketball courts is a big deal to me, though and they are new and very well maintained (though not quite full size which sucks).
I don't ever really notice it too busy and I actually very rarely have to wait for weights/machines but I go at like 7 or 7:30am most days. I imagine it can get busier in the time right after normal people get off of work. Also, I don't do any classes but I'm told they have a ton of really good ones at various times.
And I know it's hard to get over it, but I wouldn't worry about people judging at any gym. We all have to start somewhere. I was only physically able to do ANY upper body workout within the last two years or so with my fucked up elbow. I rehabbed/got my strength back with another guy who had a similar injury and we started out just benching the bar on our program
^ $28 a month if you join under age 29. Or at least it was when I joined. You should do it!

yea i like the Y cause its affordable and here in raleigh the young adult age joining and monthly rate goes a lot longer than than the gboro Y i go to. i'm already getting cut off cause "young adult" is only people 25 and under apparently so i'm ending my membership there at the end of this month before my rate goes up to $50/mo. booooo.
but i'm moving back here in a month. i like the Finley Y and its near my parent's house but i don't anticipate living here long (i mean maybe a few months) and my friends go to the Hillsb. Y soooo i'd rather get a membership there (cause that is the area i'd like to move to if i stay in Raleigh anyway)
and i also like it (well Ys in general) because i feel like its the LEAST judgmental gym haha. i feel like other places are super hardcore. i'm more scared of the weights than i am of cardio. i haven't worked out with weights in YEARS. since high school. so....kinda out of practice!
i could bench more than the bar when i was 15 and i feel like now i'd struggle to lift the bar haha.

i'm undecided about how i feel about bow ties

but i think i like regular ties best for some reason. 6/20/2010 10:28:52 PM |

Quote : | "what is the reason?" | Don't really have one. I reckon because it is going to be Monday and I like having something to look forward to on Mondays. The "funkiest" bow tie I've got is a Madras one I'll probably wear later this week.
I came to the conclusion a few weeks ago that part of the reason regular ties have such staying power is because they're phallic symbols. Think about it, a man with a bow tie is generally judged to be more intellectual and often less overtly masculine than a man in a regular tie. Skinny ties? Emo hipsters and metrosexuals, again not the peak of the testosterone scale. When a woman wears a bow tie, it is fantastically hot without being threatening . . . if she dons a regular tie she's making an overt statement about her comfort with her own masculinity.
On there other hand, there is the white / black bowtie paradox. A white male with a bow tie is considered nerdy, intellectual and generally no threat to other males. A black man with a bow tie gives off a radical vibe.
For example:

see when i see bowtie i don't think intellectual and nerdy
i think fratty and douchey
whoops haha. this explains my like for regular ties. though perhaps you are onto something with the phallic symbol thing.
i think regular ties look more professional and intellectual to me. but i think its cause i can't get passed the fratty/douche vibe since those are the only people i've ever seen wear bowties 6/20/2010 11:21:22 PM |
