Gimp users:

How do you embed a color profile with Gimp 2.6? - google searches aren't really helping.

When I click on image properties and color profile, it says: sRGB IEC61966-2.1
Is this not my color profile?

The print company is not recognizing this and doesn't support Gimp....
Is there something different I need to do?

I am contemplating buying a DSLR. I'm looking at a Canon T1I as I have pretty much always had a Canon. Does anyone have this camera, and if what's the general consensus on the camera?

^ If its within your budget, I doubt you'd be able to beat it. The 1080p full HD video capabilities make it a tough camera to beat under $1000.


I've been eyeing the XSi and I'm waiting for a Black Friday-ish deal before picking one up. However, I really don't care about the Live View feature. I would love to know, is there a comparable DSLR out there that can match the performance of the XSi but doesn't have Live view and would be therefore cheaper?

How do I batch convert from .nef to .jpg? I dont want to use photoshop.. I got irfanview but that works only with Canon raw formats.

I bought the XSI when Best Buy was doing a package deal. Got the body, starter lens, 50-300mm lens, extra battery and case for 799. I would assume they will be pushing it during the holiday season. I love it. To be honest I never use the live view. I always look through the finder.

btw, canon just said that they are working on a new firmware update to have all the new advanced video settings that's on the 7D and the mkIV for the 5D mkII. Yah! Should be out early 2010.

Any opinions on refurbished cameras?

I assume if they're purchased from reputable dealers with factory warranty, I could buy with some some confidence that its not a piece of shit....right?? I'm not looking at any one in particular but I found a few different nikon's that I'm thinking about.

Lost quite a bit of detail in the weed/flower you were shooting. I'm assuming that was 1.8. Maybe 4 would show more detail. Even stepping down to 2 or 2.8 might be enough.

i'm selling my Canon 18-55 lens if anyone is interested... asking $90

-Canon EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

-includes 58mm lens cap (not Canon as that one was lost)

lens glass is perfect and the UV filter is in great shape as well. no visible markings and little signs of use on the lens. i just don't use it since i got my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

Finally upgraded to CS4. Photoshop is using about 5 gBs right now putting together a panorama of about 12 15mp photos. You guys typically see this much ram usage? I mean it's not a big deal as long as it doesn't start to slow everything else down while i'm working on photos.

-and my hdd just went empty. does bridge or ps cache more than cs3/32 bit? I think it got confused with a panorama i was attemping to put together and used about 50gB of hdd space.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but a polarizing filter is only useful in certain situations...it's useless indoors and when it's cloudy outside...basically, it improves saturation, reduces reflection, and increases contrast, so it's mostly useful when taking pictures including lots of bright sky (increases contrast of the clouds, the blue becomes deeper, and it reduces overexposure)...some of this can be done with a combination of manual settings and a good eye, but a polarizer certainly has its uses and can yield some nice results

that might have been exactly the question you were asking, or not...as a general rule, i keep a UV filter on all my lenses at all times unless i specifically need or want something else...really, you should always have at least the UV filter on at all times, if for no other reason to protect the lens itself

well I guess I'm asking because it's fall and it's always cloudy here in Upstate and I saw something about a polarizing filter making the fall colors pop. I have a UV filter so just wondering if that's the next thing I should be getting.

I also have no idea what I'm doing regarding post processing so what books/websites do you guys recommend?

^ polarizer won't do you a lot of good if it's cloudy (though "cloudy" is relative, i guess)...you'd probably get more use out of the "vibrance" feature of photoshop CS4

To re-iterate what quagmire said, it's a very specialized filter and you'll end up barely using it unless you are taking pics of landscape, the most common use of it. It's not completely useless for indoor, but you sedomly see photogs who use it indoor. One good example is to reduce the glare or reflections off a glass window when shooting through it, such as at zoo's or aquariums.

Color saturation doesn't improve, only that it just reduces the luminance of the light source from the direction that you are blocking it from, essentially making blue's deeper. It does cut down of unwanted light sources in the specular highlights and increase contrast of the highlights.

Do you need it? Not really, I know plenty of photog's who just bracket and photoshop it all, specially with using Nik filters for photoshop.

In addition to bright sky I'd recommend it for photographing cars or water.

Without the polarizer your lens will only pick up the reflection of light coming off a nice custom paint job on a car. With the polarizer it will pick up the richness of the colors, making it look deep; as it does in real life.

Water is a lot like the sky. If water is just a background element it will look more vibrant with the polarizer. The polarizer will also cut through the glare and photograph underneath the water if your subject lies beneath the surface.

Amazon sold out of the 55-250mm lens earlier this morning. I got lucky around 12:30 and it showed back up. I bought this package. Between this and the 50mm f/1.8 lens I got for $89 off Dell.com, hoping this will be a nice intro to DSLR.
