wow, what a great read. That dude really decomposed about every flimsy argument that's been made in the last 20 years regardless of program. Makes me admire what TX is doing from a compliance standpoint and I am sure that's how TOB runs the ship as well. 6/1/2011 2:10:14 PM |

Quote : | "To use some blunt military language, the Texas compliance office does not **** around.
If you have a car, the compliance office will have the make, model, and plate number. You have to show how you are making payments or who is making payments. They let you know that if you drive something other than the car you tell them about, it better belong to a family member and if you park it on campus you have to bring it to the attention of the compliance office. God forbid that the UT Parking Nazis give you a parking ticket and it go unpaid before sunset. Got an unpaid ticket? MadDog had a way to remind you to park in your correct spot and that’s AFTER the ticket was paid. If you live off campus, you have to provide your lease at the beginning of each semester and show where the money to pay the rent is coming from.
Every time ANOTHER SEC school gets busted giving cars or cash (or having an agent do it) to a player, they parade the usual suspects (Holtz, Meyer, Saban) onto ESPN where they cry crocodile tears about how HARD it is to keep track of 85 guys and what they do in their off time?
Really?
You have 85 players to go with 8 position coaches, 10 S&C coaches, 5 full time academic support personnel, 5 full time athletic trainers, 15 student assistant trainers, 5 guys on the film staff, 10 equipment managers, a recruiting coordinator, and 5 guys in your compliance office devoted to football. You can do the math on player-to-support personnel ratios, but it’s pretty obvious that if the people in a NCAA football program are paying one lick of attention and actually give a rip about playing by the rules, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have a car (worth driving) that people in the program don’t know about. This “open secret” at Ohio State with cars ranging from free to ultimate sweetheart deals is unforgiveable." |

It's really not even that difficult. I have no idea why people keep bringing this 85 number up. At no point in time will an agent/runner/car salesman help anybody out that doesn't have a pro future, someone that can return the favor. Sure, the scrub may get a hundred dollar handshake at some point, but the real goods go to the good players. So out of an 85 man roster, you're looking at 10-20/tops who the program needs to keep an eye on. With 10 coaches and at minimum a 6 man compliance department (forgetting all the other people), it's ridiculous to keep hearing "it's hard to know what 85 kids are doing."
If I were in charge of the NCAA, I would actually make a bylaw that states that any head coach/AD/Chancellor/President that uses the "I didn't know" or "It's hard to keep track of 85 guys" will be considered an NCAA infraction and is immedialtey punishable with a $50,000 fine to the school and head coach personally suspeneded one game without pay. Butch Davis and Tressel supporters are making it out like you've got 85 guys running around town (or the country in UNC's case) in 85 different directions with camouflage flying under the radar and how impossible it is to know everything. Well, when your players are rolling around town in 6 different cars without a valid license and others are Twittering it and posting pics on Facebook, it's not exactly a stealth mission designed to undermine your compliance department. It's blatant arrogance and a middle finger pointed right at the NCAA

We had 3 academic violations(Burney, Smith, Gupton) which we appropriately punished with all else being cleared, 2 with ridiculous trumped up extra benefit violations (Burney, Williams) and the 3 with real benefit violations (Austin, Little, Quinn). Not saying I want any or excuse their behavior but my god what other school would be able to survive such an intense scrutiny and come away with as few violations as we did." |

These docs must be a bombshell...
Quote : | "UNC files for a stay in release of football investigation documents Posted: Today at 3:33 p.m. Updated: Today at 3:55 p.m. Lawyers for the University of North Carolina asked for more time Friday to comply with a judge’s order to release documents to the local media.
WRAL News and others have asked for documents related to the NCAA and an internal investigation of the UNC football team, maintaining that they are public records. University officials have denied access to the records, citing student privacy protection laws.
Superior Court Judge Manning issued an order May 12 to back up his April ruling that the documents requested must be released within 30 days. The university says a stay is necessary to avoid irreparable harm and to protect the University's right to a meaningful appeal. The stay will be in place until the court removes it.
The documents requested include the following: •Unredacted phone numbers on telephone bills for mobile phones provided to and used by UNC Director of Athletics Dick Baddour, head football coach Butch Davis and former associate football coach John Blake •Names, employment dates and salaries of anyone employed as a tutor or mentor for UNC student-athletes since the beginning of 2007 •Parking tickets issued by UNC to 11 players •All records of any investigation conducted by the university related to any misconduct by any UNC football coach or player, sports agent, athletic booster or academic tutor •The names of all individuals or organizations who provided improper benefits to any UNC football players.
The first and last requests have been fulfilled.
The NCAA has been investigating the football program since last summer in connection to allegations of improper relationships between players and agents. UNC also is investigating allegations of academic misconduct by players.
Fourteen players missed some or all of the games played in the 2010 season. The NCAA declared two of them, receiver Greg Little and defensive end Robert Quinn, permanently ineligible, and UNC kicked a third, defensive tackle Marvin Austin, off the team. " |

^ I agree with you in theory but this ain't basketball, and this guy is as old school as it gets. He's not going to risk his reptutation on Butch Davis, this is an educated man, not the walmart greeter that we see frequently on IC. I mean his name is all over the law school and on street corners. And in this state, if you go to any courthouse, political function, or any board of any significance, it's going to be crawling with smurf grads.
But like I said, Roy and the boys ain't on trial, so it's not worth going to bat over for a guy with plenty to lose if his reputation came into question.
Now the SOS, Bowles, and the 50% UNC grad BOG, yea, don't expect much out of them. 6/3/2011 10:37:53 PM |

Judge Manning has been on the cusp of several huge cases against the State of North Carolina. He is a no non-sense judge who isn't afraid to give out rulings against the State. He's also a very fair judge that applies the law equally. I don't think you need to worry about Judge Manning.6/4/2011 7:40:38 PM |
