you have to work with what you have. if you have a group of players that are struggling at the line (even if its one night or just how they are) you have to make the adjustments and coach the game to their strengths. Florida hadn't made a contested 3 all night. We had missed most of our free throws. Why on earth would you decided to decide the game at the foul line instead of them chucking a 3 to tie the game. 1/3/2010 6:34:41 PM |
Talage All American 5093 Posts user info edit post |
^ actually, if you take away Degand's abortion of a FT exhibition, we were 9-14 for the night. If you want to blame someone about free throws you have to blame Degand. Dude shot over 75% last year, and probably does really well in practice....completely choked at the end here.

Lowe should have let the players decide the game with defense.
FLORIDA SCORED 48 POINTS IN REGULATION. WE SUCK DICK AT FREE THROWS.
I'd let the defense decide the fate of the game every time.

I just wanna say for the idiots disagreeing with the foul when you are up three strategy JIM FUCKING VALVANO IS CREDITED WITH INVENTING THAT and it was a great job by Sidney to have the guys prepared to execute it in an end game situation. I can't believe people on an NC STATE message board are actually arguing against Valvano. If we hadn't fouled and they'd hit a routine three pointer you can believe people would have been complaining about that. 1/3/2010 8:12:26 PM |

if you want to be pissed about a strategy then be pissed that degand didnt throw the ball straight up in the air with 3 seconds to go
of course i wouldnt want lowe to coach that because i guarantee that at nc state one of our dumb players would throw the ball up with 5 secs, it'd land oob with 1 and we'd get dagger'd anyway. 1/3/2010 8:29:14 PM |

like I said, I wouldnt want him to teach that because I guarantee one of our players would fuck it up.
but if someone who knew what he was doing executed it properly he could rainbow it into florida's back court pretty easily and their best chance (provided they could run it down) would be the same shot they beat us with, except it'd likely be a fade away with momentum going backwards

^^ its an interesting idea, but I feel like there would be too much risk of the ball getting batted with all the Florida players swarming around him.
Plus, it would look pretty bad if the coach was like "ok kid, you stink so bad at free throws that I just want you to throw that shit up in the air." I think it'd be better for the team's psyche to at least pretend you have faith in your player's ability to make the shots. I mean lets face it, if we don't figure out this FT thing, we're fucked the rest of the season anyway. Might as well show faith in the players.

When Degand got the ball there at the end he immediately stopped and waited to be fouled. He was behind his defender, and if he takes off running, that guy probably doesn't get to foul him. This would have required someone further down the court to foul him. That would've wasted at least 1 second off the clock and that woulda been the ball game.
Or maybe, with 3.X seconds left, instead of inbounding the ball to Degand, we throw it down to the other end of the court. 1/3/2010 8:48:26 PM |

LOL
that was a real half assed lob though. first off, why the fuck did he throw it straight up on that end of the floor when there was no one in front of him?
second, he got like no hang time. maybe he didnt want to hit the jumbo tron?
still, that was ~3 when he launched it and the guy got off a decent shot. IIRC Degand wouldve gotten it up with a little over 3 if he planned it like that and there's a chance he wouldve gotten stuffed and the ball stolen so I guess it's not any better than banking on them missing a 75 footer

Agreed on all parts....Mays is getting worse. Remove his scholarship or "help" him transfer. He shouldn't see the court. I would have taken Degand out there at the end though and put anyone else in to shoot free throws.1/4/2010 2:38:40 AM |

We should have won the game. We're better than UF. And playing at home, it should have been won in regulation. We only scored 19 in the 2nd half. And Javi's 6 TOs killed us. The starting PG can't have 6 TOs.
Sid can't escape blame for the way the team played in the 2nd half. Plus, having degand in the game at the end was stupid when you know they are going to foul. No one but Wood, Mays, or Horner should have been allowed to touch the ball at the end. 1/4/2010 12:14:45 PM |

Remember when we sucked at free throw shooting as a team under herb?
He had players take 100 free throws in practice for every one they missed during a game.
We wound up improving dramatically through the rest of that season. The following year we were the best free throw shooting team in the conference.
We gotta fix the free throw issue. 1/4/2010 1:26:30 PM |

^^seriously? Did you even watch the game? Mays had 1 TO. He shoots 84% from the line (26 of 31). Degand has made 3 FTs all year (1 of which was last night). Why the hell did he have the ball at the end of the game?
Mays is the best FT shooter on the team. The ball should have been in his hands when you knew they were going to foul.
Was he even in the game then? I don't remember.

mays couldnt break the press to save his life, which more than likely would have been a TO cause he cant keep on calling timeouts to save his ass.
Degand was teh only one who could break the press.
Horner should be inbounding the ball and wood should be getting the ball in crunch time, since horner is the definition of anti-clutch 1/4/2010 2:40:52 PM |

Remember that 18-7 run in the first half where we looked like a pretty good basketball team? We had Javi, Degand, Smith, Wood, and somebody else (I forget who). Billy D. calls time out at the end of the run and Lowe proceeds to bench Tracy Smith for the next 5 minutes?
We need to see those 5 that were on the court for that 18-7 run for the majority of ALL of the remaining games with only 1 or 2 other players getting minutes to give that starting five a blow. We don't need to be rotating 9-10 deep like we're doing now.
Lowe will figure this out sometime in late February. 1/4/2010 6:31:57 PM |

6 or 7 man rotation FTL.
If we could hit FTs the best line-up would probably be Javi, Degand, Wood, Horner, Smith. Bring Mays, Davis, and 2 of Painter/Howell/Vandenberg off the bench. Don't play Williams many minutes again till he learns to be more aggressive. ] 1/4/2010 7:10:48 PM |
