^ Yeah, I had the same thought. Worst case, it falls out and I'll redo it with white enamel or something.

I tried yellow on one, but it doesn't pop like white does. I finished that mag with red, just for something different.

Just for fun I once filled in the stupid paragraph on the side of my target grey Super Redhawk. It was quite ugly. Filling in the text on the cylinder was kinda neat.

I am kind of in the opposite postion, I am trying to strip the paint on my AR right now and those engravings are a pain in the ass. Glad my father-in-law is an orthodontist so I have plenty of tooth brushes at my disposal

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but you can carry in businesses posted with no firearms; however, you can be asked to leave and could only be charged with trespassing; correct? Know what statute that is?

No, that place is off limits.

"Any other premises where notice that carrying a concealed handgun is prohibited by the posting of a conspicuous notice or statement by the person in legal possession or control of the premises."

Right, but what is the penalty?

damn, missed it three times:

A person who violates the provisions of this Article other than as set forth in subsection (a) of this section is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. (1995, c. 398, s. 1; 2011-268, s. 21(a).)

^^If you ever happen to be in FL, they don't have any signage requirement like we do. If works as you originally described, where the worst they can do is trespass you.

And if you are in Texas they have to have one of two very specific signs. Just saying no concealed firearms allowed doesn't do jack.

Its never been defined by state law. I would hope that a reasonable LEO would just ask you to disarm if you are still allowed to stay in that place.

Today I went out to the Wake Co. range to try my new Mosin Nagant setup. Overall, I must say I am VERY pleased. I went from shooting ~8-10 MOA irons to ~3.33 MOA with a 3 MOA red dot.

It didn't take me long to start hitting paper. I realize the shots aren't on target, as I was still sighting the red dot in, however, I wanted to show the consistency of the red dot scope.

After 35 Rounds of 1974 steel core surplus ammo, this is what I achieved:

(50 yards, sitting, 1.5" group, 4" diameter target circle)

After a total of 40 rounds were shot, I decided to put it out to 100 yards to see what I could do.

(100 yards, sitting, 3.33" group horizontally, 1" vertically)

So... I still need to fine tuning. After a total of 65 fired rounds, the mount has held up extremely well. I don't think the recoil loosened up the mount at all. I did use red loctite for the base to the receiver and blue loctite on the scope rings, so I don't suspect they should ever move. Also, the scope held zero pretty damn well. I blame my own marksmanship for the discrepancy. I did get it sighted in, but these are the best groups I achieved.

Oh that rubber butt plate I mounted is FANTASTIC. It's amazing. I was wearing a really thin pollo with a cotton undershirt. I could shoot all day long and my shoulder would not feel sore. I feel perfectly fine right now actually

Like new. Literally. I don't think my gun was used much, as the crown and the rifling are very solid. It's by far the cleanest one in about the 50 or 60 that I've seen. The only thing is the front sight post is not original. It's been replaced. I don't know why they would do that, but otherwise, it's a diamond condition rifle. Bore is solid, no dark discoloration, zero pitting or corrosion. I really wish my final groups were as well as the once I posted after I had the gun sighted in. My arms were getting tired trying to hold steady a ~10lb rifle in a sitting position with no sling. FWIW, I'm pleased with the setup. I could only imagine a LER scope would help with the long distance precision, but I have no complaints with the red dot.

Never owned a gun but am getting a pistol permit on May 1. Looking for recommendations for decent first time pistol. I am mainly looking at this as a home defense item, but the reason I'm probably not going with a shotgun is because I'd like to actually take it to the range some, and I just don't see myself doing that with a shotgun. My budget is about $250, maybe as high as 300. I know that won't get me the best but I'm also not opposed (and may even prefer if the deal is better) a used gun.

I've heard revolvers are better for newbies because they won't jam like a magazine, but does that really happen that much to be a big consideration?

^ I would suggest getting a used full- or compact-frame 9mm pistol (3.5"+ barrel, 10+ round capacity) from a major manufacturer (glock, smith & wesson, sig sauer, walther, etc...). 9mm is the cheapest pistol to shoot (21 cents/round) among the calibers I, personally, would recommend for home defense. A gun from a major manufacturer should be highly reliable and have a large community that you can tap for support should you need it.

Lawman's has a good selection of used guns in very good condition. Moreover, they have a selection of used guns considered reliable enough for life-threatening situations. Other local shops may also. Call around to be sure. If you're willing to push your budget higher (closer to $500), you can buy new.

Frankly, try to borrow and rent several different types and brands of guns before you buy so that you can get a feel for both what's available and what you prefer to shoot. Don't forget to budget money for after your purchase for maintenance supplies and practice ammunition.

Save up another $100-$150 and buy a Glock or XD 9mm. There is a huge difference from a $300 and $400 gun, way more than the monetary difference.

^Not a good first gun, or ideal home defense gun.
Too small, and I can't count the number of times I've seen the grip safety cause people problems.

^^ the same number of times you've watched an amputee shoot? If the pistol isn't back in the web of your hand, you don't have a proper grip. If you have a proper grip, the grip safety is deactivated. I think the same number of people have seen/heard other people have problems with the grip safety as the number of people that know someone whose Glock KB'd.

^6, I'd have to agree with the others saying to save up more money. I've owned 2 hi-points but I'd never carry a pistol that I got for $300 unless it was from a buddy that was hard up for cash and I knew its history. For $400 you should be able to find some decent guns like a Glock 19, Springfield XD9, S&W M&P9. There's a shop in/around Raleigh that sells the base XD9 (doesn't have the holsters & stuff) for $400+tax new. You can also grab some of Lawman's Police trade-ins for $350-400 pretty regularly and they're usually carried a lot and shot little. It would be a bit harder to find a 9mm in those though.

Also check out the CZ-75 or P-01, great gun for the money (around 400-500). There's a gun show in raleigh next weekend, best way to handle a wide variety of pistols and see what suits you best.

^^ I do a lot of advanced weapon classes and training. In any class where someone had an XD, they had problems with it. That makes my comments based on experience, and not on Internet lore. The grip safety on a XD is fine in theory but not in practice. The magazine disconnect sucks as well.
I have seen amputees shoot, on many occasions. Usually it is a lost leg, but ever once an a while it is with one hand/arm gone.
I have never seen a Glock KB.

Anyone use a 1-4x scope on an AR? I was thinking about going with something like the Burris Fullfield TAC 30 on my current build. I have an EOTech now that I will probably sell. I really like it as an optic but the battery life kills it for me. I like to set most of my guns up so that in an end of times/zombie apocalypse type situation I wouldn't have an achilles heel like that.

What kind of batteries does your EOTech use and how much do you want to sell it for.

I've got a Nikon M223 on one of my ARs and i'm perfectly happy with it. We have SpecterDRs at work, but I've never been a big fan, the eye relief is hard to get right on the 1x.

this seems a little far fetched. you're saying you're seeing 100% failures on XD's on the span of a class? I don't think they'd have such a high reputation if the failure rate was so massive

^^ Uses the N batteries or whatever. Not sure what I am trying to sell it for, haven't looked into what it is worth yet.

Took this....

Reduced it to these reusable parts....

And am currently here with available parts....

Ordered a boatload of parts this weekend so will have some more updates soon. Have a Magpul MOE+ grip, Geissele SSA-E trigger, Magpul Trigger Guard, Magpul ACS stock, and a Magpul B.A.D. Lever on the way to finish the lower and then a Troy/VTAC BattleRail Alpha 13" free float rail, Yankee Hill low profile gas block, and a Troy Modular Combat Grip to finish up the upper. Will still need some flip up sights, a flash hider, and some optics. I wanted to wait on the flash hider until I see how the rest of it comes together and haven't decided which sights to go with or what optics.

Like a kid waiting for Christmas with all these parts coming. After I finish this build it will be time to do some work on the AR-10

Too bad that magnified optics are prohibited at work unless you have a bolt gun. My next purchase will be an EOTECH or the Trijicon SRS if they ever (ha) come down in price.

^ that doesn't seem logical?

Is it because it gives you more confidence in your shot then the gun can afford or something?

I believe the logic is to instill marksmanship skills. Though I've started to see more situations where an optic would have been a better choice (i.e. very low light or high contrast target v. background - headlights through irons sights is brutal). I think using irons has made me a better precision shooter on the range but attempt to acquire irons quickly in a gas mask or finding your front sight when looking into pitch back w/out ambient light.

Even if you have an approved optic, you still have to qualify w/ irons and then again w/ an optic. I think the brass is afraid that people would just buy an ACOG and forget how to run the gun.

Not sure if its a confidence issue - I carry department issued COLT that I have shot out to 300 yards although I'm 99% sure I would never take a shot from that far away in the world I work in.

Optics such as ACOG's were approved until about a year ago and with the stroke of a pen, magnification was prohibited. Our brass won't listen and our firearms guys says that if you can't shoot the gun w/ irons, don't bother with optics. The only guys who get issued optics are snipers (bolt guns and accurized AR's) and the hostage team.

Some of it is the brass, some of it is standards set forth by training and standards. We have gunstore commandos and some real deal former commandos and its always political.

Yes it does. Gas impingement systems are inherently more accurate than tappet designs due to all the rattling around in the gun during cycle of operations

do you think the ($2500) difference in price is worth it between the stock dpms gun and the complete JPE?
