What's the best general method for researching stocks? What do you guys do to initially when you're looking for new stocks to invest in? And once you've identified any stocks that may be interesting, what websites might you use, what information to you search for and what criteria do you use as you're making the decision whether to invest in a particular security?
any specific advice would be greatly appreciated 6/9/2006 6:22:33 PM |

To tell you the truth, I dont have alot of good calls right now. The markets so skiddish that anything that would be considered a good buy is being overridden by investor fears about inflation. My advice is too hold off and bargain shop:
My picks are
Wait for SIRI to slip into the threes, buy and dump at $4.30. Rinse, lather, repeat. SIRI is a good long term hold on paper, but volume wise it is one of the most traded stocks on NASDAQ each day. It is being driven down by shorts and large institutionals. I remember an analyst saying that Sirius really did its shareholders a disservice by issuing so many shares and diluting the value so much that it is much easier for manipulation. If you want a a good quick 10-15% return in a day, buy SIRI low and immediately put in a sell order for an intraday bounce.
BCSI is well undervalued and should be back in the the 20's by year end.
PEIX will make a comeback into the 30's. Ethanol consumption continues to grow daily.
SIFY should return to the mid teens
REDF has always been highly speculative, but its at a 50% discount from its March prices
Bookham (BKHM) was a Cramer pick awhile ago that has yet to produce, but has tons of potential and is attractively priced
The key for these stocks is to wait untill the outlook improves for the markets. There is still room for declines in these stocks, so it is good to hold off and look for bottom. These stocks will all pay off, it just takes patience. 6/12/2006 1:26:48 PM |

Want to invest in crude oil?
"The newest exchange-traded fund to hit the marketplace is the USO, the symbol for Victoria Bay Asset Management's United States Oil Fund (USO).
This fund is unique in the ETF oil patch in that, unlike those focused on energy company stocks, such as the Energy Select Sector Spider (XLE), the USO enables investors to speculate on the price movement of the underlying commodity--crude oil.
The ETF's benchmark is the spot price of West Texas Intermediate light, sweet crude oil delivered to Cushing, Okla., minus expenses. The USO will invest in energy futures contracts, cash-settled options and other instruments including short-term U.S. Treasury securities.
The USO's structure means that investors won't have to pursue such speculation on a contract-by-contract basis through the futures markets themselves. Instead, the USO creates a diversified pool of contracts and provides ease of entry and exit from one's position." (more at url)

if they were smart, they got stopped out of their positions and are waiting to get back in.
There isn't a flight to value - every market and every industry is being hit. technical levels are being ignored. Analysts - as usual - are quiet and not willing to step in and make any predictions. Everyone is heading to the door and not looking back. In short, nobody knows what is going on.
Also, Best Buy announced good news, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to infer that consumer spending is strong.

Since TIE is so low I'm considering dropping about half my GOOG to put into TIE. Bought the GOOG at 343--any thoughts?
edit: Definitely should have tossed the GOOG when it got into the 440's a little while ago, back in April. Oh well... Oh...and yeah it would be great if RMBS would go up too. Either I need to kill myself, or just buy a lot of stuff now since everything is so low.

Spoke with the CFO of INNO yesterday. Just sold everything out of my portfolio and bought INNO. Before you say "the CFO is supposed to say good things about their company, etc, etc..", just trust me on this and buy it now!
Do a little research on who they just added to their board, debt levels, and demand of their products. BING BING. 6/16/2006 11:01:01 AM |

Designer boutique brands come in and out of vogue very quickly. From an investment perspective, it's not a wise play until longevity and strong fundamentals are established.
Until then, you may as well drop that cash at a roulette table. At least there'll be hot girls to look at. 6/16/2006 11:52:45 AM |
