As for ESPNU, which is on ESPN2 right now, could Blue Edwards be any more depressing? Also, he has a huge nose. 3/9/2007 10:47:44 PM |

Mike Gminkski and the other commentator talked about that once during the broadcast. They were like, "Lowe having the ability to give the loud whistle doesn't just get the attention of his players, but it gets the attention of all 22,000 people in here."
I didn't realize Leitao was that big of an asshole. I mean I knew he got on his players, but there's a difference in trying to motivate and embarassing your players.

Quote : | "Through eight exciting games involving all 12 teams, Virginia coach Dave Leitao stood out in extreme fashion for the manner in which he interacted with his own players during the Cavaliers' 79-71 quarterfinal loss to N.C. State.
Every coach has his own style, but in Tampa most were reserved when they addressed their teams. Sidney Lowe of N.C. State and Al Skinner of Boston College, for example, almost always remain calm, cool and collected with their players, something they call a byproduct of their playing and/or coaching days in the professional ranks. Gary Williams of Maryland screams a lot, but he generally does so in the direction of his assistant coaches, or sometimes toward nobody in particular. Skip Prosser of Wake Forest sometimes has an outburst toward an individual player, but his tone is typically one of frustration, not anger.
Leitao, an angry, brewing volcano of emotions on the sidelines, is an entirely different story. Consider these comments Friday night, to his own players. They all were uttered as the coach flailed his arms or twisted his body dramatically on the sidelines, in full view (and often within listening distance) of the hundreds of fans in the lower level of the UVa cheering section, and directly into the faces of the players involved, at a distance of just a few feet.
To J.R. Reynolds, after the senior wing guard showed a frustrated look on his face following some initial criticism from Leitao: "You're going to be sensitive with me? Today? We're at the ACC Tournament, and you're going to play sensitive with me? Get outta here!"
To Tunji Soroye, after the junior center failed to make a defensive stop and grab a rebound: "What are you doing? What are you DOING?! I need tough from you today, and you give me soft. I need tough, you give soft. I'm looking for toughness out there, and you give me nothing. NOTHING!"
To Will Harris, after the freshman forward missed a defensive assignment: "Where are you today? Where ARE you today?! Are you with us? This isn't about your heart. This is about your brain. You're not thinking out there! Where are you?!"
To a group of players on the bench, with freshman forward Jamil Tucker in the middle, after a player on the court failed to get out on a 3-point shooter: "How many times did we practice against that? What do we do against double screens? (Nobody answers.) Nobody knows the answer? Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?! You don't listen. That's our problem. You don't listen, AND you don't talk (on defense)! (Looks at Tucker.) You wouldn't talk if your life depended on it! That's our problem. Nobody talks, and nobody listens."
To the entire bench, after Tucker made a bad play on the court: "And he's been begging me to put him in the game — begging me!! Just like you! (Points to players.) Just like you! And he plays like that!"
Another observation: Among the 12 ACC teams, no group of players makes less eye contact with their coach while he's speaking than the Cavaliers. Hmmm...." |

what Leitao does is not normal. verbally abusing a 18-21 year old kid is fucking ridiculous. yeah, thats gonna give em confidence what you're calling "normal" is when a coach says certain things out of frustration occasionally, when there is a yin and a yang. all that douchebag does is dwell on negative events and humiliate his players until they are obviously completely deflated
i'd also like to say that i think sidney is doing a great job of inspiring the fans to keep their televisions on when ncsu goes down double digits early
on that note, theres only one thing left to say:

^ i rarely hear of a college coach being abusive to his players that directly in any sport... usually they just yell at an assistant ABOUT the player while in full view of the player...
hell, even known volatile coaches like Parcells and Knight are known to yell at assistants during gametime, and leave the more personal conversations for practice... 3/10/2007 9:53:32 AM |

None of those quote were abusive. Probably not very constructive and not really teaching them anything but they arent anything to get up in arms about. 3/10/2007 9:54:48 AM |

im consider myself an expert on verbal abuse. it's not always what you say, it's how you say it, or how it makes the other parties feel.
and furthermore, any idiot can tell you that you're not gonna instill confidence in someone by belittling them 3/10/2007 9:59:24 AM |

he had hate in his eyes by the end of the game... looking at him on the sidelines, you knew his team was gonna hear it in the locker room...
although i really thought he was going to go after the officials, he really didn't like their calls in the second half (particularly the 4th and 5th fouls on Cain, and the shoving foul where it almost looked like a jumpball, but upon closer examination their guy actually had our player in a chinlock) 3/10/2007 11:02:40 AM |

you did notice that we used 9 players right? Sid is a smart guy, and brian really stepped up that's why we're where we're at. But if you are telling me that you wouldn't want more quality players right now then just go ahead and tell sid to rescind the scholarship offers he made to Smith, Hickson, Thomas, and Javi3/10/2007 11:03:24 AM |

nothing there is particularly terrible to me, but the fact that glenn went out of his way to write about it is telling.

If my coach shouted that kind of shit at me, I'd tune him out first, then make him eat his words later. Clearly they didn't respond very well to his verbal spew this time, and it wouldn't shock me to learn that it has happened before. 3/10/2007 2:17:07 PM |

yeh he didnt use 9 in the second half of this game nor did he use 9 during Duke. And incase you didnt watch we did a helluva lot better in the second half. VA had their hands on there knees and our guys didnt. And what part of "I think our short bench will help us in the tourney" leads you to say I think we should take the scholarships away from Smith and company. I didnt say oh we should never sign more than 2 good players a year and always have a 6 man rotation.
