"NC State 63, Drexel 56

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Engin Atsur and Ben McCauley each scored 16 points to lead weary North Carolina State to a 63-56 win over Drexel on Tuesday night in the first round of the NIT.

Brandon Costner's three-point play late in the game sealed the win for the Wolfpack (19-15), who advanced to play the winner of the Marist-Oklahoma State game.

The 10th-seeded Wolfpack knocked off three higher seeds in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament before losing to North Carolina in the championship game. Four exhilarating games in four days and their reward was a plane trip to Philadelphia.

Coach Sidney Lowe left his lucky red blazer behind, but the Wolfpack didn't need it in this one - not with the Dragons (23-9) miserable shooting from the foul line down the stretch.

Frank Elegar scored 24 points on 10-for-12 shooting but was overshadowed by a string of crucial misses from the line in the second half. Elegar missed eight of 12 overall, including two that could have put the Dragons ahead with 2:30 left.

Instead, McCauley sank a free throw that made it 54-54 and Costner followed with his baseline layup and the free throw, and the Wolfpack's late-season surge continued for another game.

Dominick Mejia added 11 points for the Dragons, who came in still angered over beig snubbed by the NCAA tournament selection committee."

It would be beyond cool to see the Wolfpack in Reynolds Friday night. Hopefully it would be a late game and tickets wouldn't be crazy.

I think I saw that the line was Drexel -5, so his pick at least made some sense from that.

Honestly Drexel really was snubbed in the NCAA, even though they didn't win tonight. NCSU is obviously better, but NCSU definitely belongs in the NIT.

I think its great that we have a good chance at a 20 win season. That is quite an accomplishment considering we were supposed to be in the cellar of the ACC.

First off Drexel was not fucking snubbed. They lost to Old Dominion by 25 and 10. They lost to fucking Rider. We have just as good a resume as them, maybe better. We have what 5 top 25 wins?

Second, did we play this well or was Drexel that bad? I didn't get to see the game and I cannot tell by comments. Was this team REALLY NCAA caliber or not?

they really were. i honestly can't say they are much different than your average acc team. dominant post player inside. perimeter scorer outside. a bunch of fillers with athleticism.

if you ask me, both teams had shitty games. one of the lesser performances i've seen this season, and definitely the worst win.

i know, we're tired, five games in six days. but i'm just saying, we played like shit and still won, drexel did not get snubbed, they're not very good.

They were absolutely snubbed. They beat some decent teams (at Creighton, at Syracuse, at Villanova, at Vermont) and only a couple "bad" losses (Rider, William and Mary).

And I am not saying Drexel is better than NCSU. But, according to what they did during the season, they absolutely deserve to be in the big dance over teams like Nevada, Butler, Arkansas, and others).

And if you actually want to try and argue that any team with 15 losses (and some to HORRIFIC teams) deserves to get an at large bid, regardless of who they managed to knock off during the conference tourney..... there is absolutely no logic in that and I can't even make an intelligent argument against that.

Just got back from Drexel. Place was basically a big high school gym. It was hot as balls. I would say that state fans made up 1/7th of the crowd. Apparently Dennis Horner brought 40 people. They went nuts when he went into the game. Had a bunch of horner signs. The Drexel fans unfurled some huge banner at one point in the game, but I couldn't make out what it said.

Drexel fans were not classy in the slightest, but they were basically harmless. They shutup at the end, and we got the chant going. It was really loud when Drexel hit some of those clutch threes.

As far as their play, it looked like Eleger was their only real offensive player. I LOVE Dom Mejia's shot selection. Gave us the game. We looked a bit tired. We had some missed FTs and point blank shots. Costner phoned in most of the game until that clutch drive to the basket at the end. Hopefully we slowed it down just to save energy.

Also at the postgame handshakes, Grant had some greetings with Eleger, and Mejia talked to Levi Watkins a little bit.

Eleger has some Julius-Hodge-esque FT shooting form. He made more than I expected, but missed enough to lose the game. Think he missed a 1 and 1 that was huge.

I think it had more to do with the bad acoustics and tight confines of the DAC. The ten rows behind the State bench were filled with "Philly's finest young minds".

My college choice came down to State or Drexel, so I have nothing but love for the Dragons, except for tonight.

not only did they get snubbed out of the tourney but then they have to play a team better than most teams in the tourney first round. lets not forget our record with atsur.

haha, David Thompson is quoted on Wiki in reference to the NIT...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Invitation_Tournament

Quote :
"Since the post-season NIT consists of teams who failed to receive a berth in the NCAA Tournament, the NIT has been humorously nicknamed the "Not Invited Tournament" or the "Not In Tournament". David Thompson, an All-American player from N.C. State, called the NIT "a loser's tournament" in 1975. It has also been seen as nothing more than a tournament to see who the "66th best team" in the country is (since there are now 65 teams in the NCAA Tournament). N.C. State, which had been the previous year's NCAA champion, refused to play in the tournament that year, setting something of a precedent. In succeeding years, other teams such as Oklahoma State, Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Georgetown have declined to play in the NIT when they did not make the NCAA tournament.

Does anyone have any idea where the second will be played? I can't find it anywhere. Maybe it hasn't been announced. I'm assuming not at the RBC Center since Groban will be there.

Too be fair, they lost in the first round to a team that just beat a 4,5, and 6 seed in the ncaa and took a good game to a 1 seed.

To be fair, teams from mid major conferences who don't make the tournament shouldn't ever bitch about it. If you can't win a conference like the colonial, then you don't have any argument about going to the tournament.

They won against Creighton, Villa, and Syracuse... and had 8 losses to mediocre at best mid major teams.

Only slightly redeeming factor is a 3-4 record against rpi top 50 but with their 4 other losses coming against just awful teams I don't see how you can really make a plee for the NCAA tourny... especially after losing first round in the NIT (although I think they were unlucky to get matched up with us being a #6 seed).

I mean seriously they lost to Rider and William and Mary...

Lots of teams had more and worse losses than Drexel's 2 bad losses, with not as good of wins as NCSU had. Plus, trying to justify the selection committees decision by this game is just stupid. As people have said, NCSU (the one that has played the last week) is definitely a Top 25 caliber, NCAA team, not a team that barely limped in to the NIT. Plus, you have to look at motivations.... DU (regardless of how anyone feels) thinks they got screwed by the committee, so they could probably care less about the NIT, while (considering our season) this was a blessing to even be playing (ie we lose to Duke or probably Virginia, we're watching the NIT on TV too.

^^^looks like if we beat marist we will get about 4-6 days to rest before our rematch with WVU. that ought to give us enough time to rest/heal and get ready for revenge.
