Fells seems like he can't find himself, he's lost out there until he picks a skill and sticks with it. Once he does though, he could be very explosive and good.

While this might be true, the whole "wait until....." is useless when a player is finished with his sophomore season. He's played in 30 games where he has gotten 30+ minutes and still doesn't play defense. We can't even honestly say he plays bad defense because he doesnt' play any D at all that can be assessed. I wish there was a camera at practice next season. I'll just offer this, does anyone think Hickson (McD AA) came to lil ol NC State, a team who got bounced in the NIT to not start??? I'm thinking Fells will have to step up or sit down

Fells has had good defensive games and bad ones. If he just has to guard a guy straight up and doesn't have to think too much, he's good. See VT, UVA games.

In this game, the WVU players were throwing a lot of stuff at him where he just reacted a step too slowly. Hopefully, he will just get better with experience and coaching. He's our most athletic player, by far. He has the tools to be a lock down defender.

Do you mean high ball screens??? 8 year olds can grasp this concept defensively, it's not "throwing a lot of stuff at him" Trust me, Belein didn't have to stay up all night last night thinking how to free up Fells's man

This is true, but a useless piece of information without applying it on a consistent basis on the court. Stone in football had coaches drooling over his athleticism too. When I read about recruits "jumping out of the gym" or football players with a "4.3 40" I don't put much stock in it until I see it being consistently on display, something we have failed to see from a seasoned Sophomore, but I'm glad something will happen next year, either it will be fixed, or Hickson will start.

Fells not playing well on high ball screens has nothing to do with him playing defense. If its in our scheme to not switch the screens, then there's nothing he can do but hustle and try to get around them. Everyone on that team gets blown up on high ball screen which leaves a lot of open 3's. Thats the one thing Sidney didnt do a good job on. However, Fells is usually assigned to the quickest player on the other team, so he gets used more than the rest of them. He's not a terrible defender though. He could use some work, but he REALLY needs to become more of a threat on offense.


The whole deal with our team not switching on screens may have more to do with Sidney risking the 3 ball in order to not get a bad matchup. If we end up with bad matchups with no bench, we're more likely to get into foul trouble. It makes sense to avoid this, but at the same time its harder on our guards to play D w/out switching. Who knows though...sidney knows better than any of us.

I've seen the "#4" chasing behind the man with ball driving to the hoop many times (and not always the "quickest player on the other team"), the matador defense on the perimeter selling out our post men to cover two guys essentially.

^dude, that second quote was a possible explaination for why we dont switch on screens. I mean...we DON'T as a team, you cant argue with that, but your guess is as good as mine as to why.


and BTW, Sidney has said many times that he puts Courtney on the other teams best guard. He must not be that bad.

Well boys, it was a good run and a great first season for Sid who got tossed into the shit and made everything and more out of it. Can't wait for an even better season next year!
