While people can say "look at Hawaii in 2007" others can also say "look at Boise State in 2006". That team went undefeated and beat heavily favored Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

I know a lot of people called that one. My point is that you can't be sure every game is going to turn out the way you think and if you don't give teams a chance based on the 'they-can't-win-on-paper' principle, then I think the system is pretty flawed.

Someone in the recruiting thread posted that Morgan Newton has an offer. His picture was on the cover of PP the other day so I'm assuming it's legit. I always thought he had an offer anyways but didn't think he showed any interest in us. Anyone have any insight as to whether it's a possibility that we are in play for this guy?

I thought we had a decent connection with Michel going to the same high school, but since he bailed on us I don't know how plausible it could be. It would explain why we haven't offered a guy from camp the QB scholarship and are giving Newton a week or two to decide if he's seriously interested but I'm usually out of the loop on this kind of stuff.

The vast majority of freshmen enroll in the summer. We'll have a pretty large group of players coming in to start classes on July 7. (actually, orientation on the 7th, classes on the 8th)
A small handful do the early enrollment as of the previous January by graduation from HS early. We had 4 players do that this year - Jaradat, Ellis, Maddox, Linney.

I believe you can have 5 players do this per class. I think I was hearing this sometime during the last recruiting class.

There's no limit to the number of players who can enroll in January. In Chuck's first year, I think we had nine do it.
A maximum of five of those players can be applied to the previous year's recruiting class, as long as those players don't put the total of the previous year's class over 25.

Hypothetical scenario:

2002: 22 recruits, all enroll in July/August
2003: 25 recruits, 7 enroll in January. 3 of those count toward 2002's class, making 2002 a 25 man class and 2003 a 22 man class. The remaining 4 from January don't matter.
2004: 28 recruits, 6 enroll in January. 3 of those count toward 2003's class, making 2003 a 25 man class and 2004 a 25 man class. The remaining 3 from January don't matter.
2005: 26 recruits, 2 enroll in January. Oops, last year was already a 25 man class. Those 2 can't count toward the 2004 class. Looks like you oversigned, BTB. Better hope some of them don't qualify.

^^^ Technically it was truly hypothetical. I pulled those numbers out of thin air. But it does bear a striking resemblance to something we've seen time and again from a school down the road (and will see again this year - they're already at 88 for next year and still pressing hard for more commits).

Mangram is a definite JuCo. He's already enrolled. That means he's off the market for two years. Does he stick with us? It's really too tough to tell. The JuCo recommit never works the same as the prep school recommit.
Everett seems like he won't make it in, but there's no 100% confirmation yet. Same with Locust.

Recruiting: Florida pipeline still open for State

Chuck Amato may be gone, but the pipeline to Florida he opened for N.C. State is still flowing.

Orlando, Fla., running back James Washington, who began following the Wolfpack during Amato’s tenure as head coach from 2000 to 2006, has become the latest to join Tom O’Brien’s recruiting Class of 2009.

Washington plays for Boone High School in Orlando and chose N.C. State over scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Memphis, Rutgers and South Florida.

Amato’s ties to Florida led to an influx of talent to the N.C. State program from the Sunshine State during that seven-year period. The Wolfpack’s popularity and exposure in Florida has grown as a result.

“I remember Chuck Amato and all their coaches being down here,’’ Washington said. “And because there were so many Florida players on their team, almost every one of the games was shown on TV down here.

“So I knew a lot about N.C. State, even before they started recruiting me.’’

Washington said he was told the Wolfpack began watching him as a freshman when he played at neighboring Edgewater High. But after playing sparingly behind a glut of upperclassmen for two years at Edgewater, Washington made the bold move of transferring to Boone for his junior season.

The decision paid off as the 5-foot-10, 170-pounder carried 303 times for 1,760 yards and 16 touchdowns for a team that went 14-1 and reached the state 6-A title game.

The Wolfpack came through with a scholarship offer in June. Washington was convinced he wanted to play for N.C. State after making an unofficial visit to campus in late June for football camp.

“I talked with Coach O’Brien and he told me how the program would be heading into a better direction than it has been,’’ Washington said. “He also talked about how he has another seven years on his contract, so while I’m there he’s going to be there.’’

Washington plans to graduate in December from Boone and expects to enroll at N.C. State in January. That will allow him to join a running back competition featuring upperclassmen Toney Baker, Andre Brown, Jamelle Eugene and Curtis Underwood along with 2008 freshmen Brandon Barnes and Tobias Palmer.

Baker, Brown and Eugene, however, will all have completed their eligibility by the end of the 2009 season.

Washington said he’ll bring an “explosive and dynamic’’ style to the Wolfpack running game. He cited as an example a play he made against Apopka High last season.

“It was a playoff game and we were up by two, but they were coming back,’’ Washington said. “We had the ball first-and-10 at our own 12. We ran a counter play and I took it all the way, 86 yards for a touchdown.

“I feel like I can score from anywhere on the field.’’

Chris Ward from Starr’s Mill High in Fayetteville, Ga., decided to join the Wolfpack after an impressive performance at the school’s football camp in June. A prep soccer goalie and point guard for the Starr’s Mill basketball team, Ward averaged 41.6 yards per punt as a junior to earn all-county and all-region honors.

The commitments from Ward and Washington bring N.C. State’s total to five.

1. 5* OT Xavier Nixon
2. 4* CB Terry Shankle (great athlete that can also play WR)
3. 4* WR Jheranie Boyd
4. 3* ATH Zach Greene (gotta keep the legacy recruits coming)
5. NR CB Rashard Smith (he looks like a great athlete on film and comes from Thomas Barnes' old HS)
6. 4* WR Justin Brown
7. 3* OT Travis Bond

9. 3* SLB Tariq Edwards
10. NR TE Tyrell Edwards (it'd be nice to land these twins. both were at our camp.)
11. A DE perhaps two if we have room, which we likely will. Candidates include Julius Forte, Izaan Cross, Clinton Simpkins, Justin Foxx, Sylvester Crawford, James Gayle, etc.

I wouldn't mind substituting someone for a good safety or having a safety in the class if there is room. David Sims could be a good one as well as Everett Proctor. Sims made an unofficial visit to State during the week of one of our camps. Also do we really need to sign a QB? I know there's like this unwritten rule that you sign a QB in every class, but we most likely wont be getting a guy that can really play until he's a RS JR or SR. Also Proctor can play QB if need be and would probably prefer to play QB rather than S.

there's been a buzz about possibly looking into the JuCo qbs. once the staff gets back from vacation, maybe they'll either offer mershman or look elsewhere. i don't know who else would get the offer unless bible thinks he can make proctor fit into his system.

Nice. I wasn't really expecting on getting a good QB anyways, so why not give Proctor the QB scholarship and if he doesn't do well then he's a good enough athlete that he can be used elsewhere (S, RB, WR) rather than just some guy wearing a headset and holding a clipboard for 4 years and hope to be the starter for one year. Proctor looks like he can really take off in his videos and he does have decent placement of the ball. I wouldn't mind running a two QB system like the way VT does right now. It seemed to work out for them (ACC Championship) and it adds another dimension to the offense.

Proctor has QB offers from Ga Tech and Va Tech, so I think he could be a solid back-up at QB if not eventual starter at some point if we managed to get him.

And of course Nixon has over 30 scholarship offers, he's a 5-Star OL and a big time prospect, I mean look at Brandon Barnes last year, he had just as many. Just have to hope TOB can convince him that we're the best one for him.

^^ how old is that article? Proctor was offered as an athlete first. Just today we've found out that State offered him the QB scholarship. Before camping he said this:

""They haven't offered a quarterback without the quarterback going to camp. Hopefully I'll be able to impress them a camp, and I can get a chance to play quarterback.""

Proctor wouldn't have came to camp if he wasn't serious about us. Also I doubt the staff would have offered him if they weren't sure they didn't have a real shot at him. They seem to gauge the players interest before offering, especially at QB. We seem to have a good shot at those that come to camp.


As for Xavier Nixon and his 30 offers, I'm not too worried about it. TOB and Co. were able to reel in Brandon Barnes who had over 40 scholarship offers. Barnes had Pete Carroll and Urban Meyer flying into little old Bunn just to speak with him face-to-face and he still chose us. I think we'll be in it to the end with Nixon. I just hope we can land him. We've got a lot going for us. Nixon's parents are in the military and everyone knows TOB's military background. He wants to get to the NFL and TOB and Coach Horton are some of the best in the business at developing offensive linemen. Nixon wants to graduate in 3 years and TOB loves getting guys that will enroll early and are serious about school.

I remember reading that article around the beginning of May so it's pretty dated. Proctor has a lot more options now and will hopefully give us a good, hard look.

According to that article we have taken the lead for Georgia CB Dean Haynes who recently visited State. Haynes is a 3* prospect on Scout and the #49 best CB nationally.

I like how Bible/TOB work with the QB scholarship. It seems they offer one guy they've seen with a limited timetable on a commitment. If they can't commit then, they move on to someone else. That way, they can at least control the situation a little. They might not get their top guy (like Glennon last year), but they'll get someone who can fit into their system. This gets the spot secured early rather than biting their nails on signing day when other suitable QBs are already gone or doubling up with more than one QB commitment in the same class.

This Year: Savage, Newton, Proctor, ...Mershman maybe?

Packpride says Jaradat is no longer with the team. That sucks. I was hoping we'd start a big Canadian OL pipeline. I guess that opens up another scholarship for this year.
