We have given many season-enders to other team's best players, including one that led to one of the best game chants ever:

"Rupture his Spleeeeeeen!"

It was Kris Jenkins who body-slammed Chris Simms and ruptured his spleen.

"Delhomme throws at minicamp

There is no more mystery about how much, or whether, Jake Delhomme is throwing after undergoing elbow surgery.

In somewhat of a surprise, Delhomme threw 34 passes during individual drills Friday morning as the Panthers opened a three-day minicamp. He didn't throw during team drills.

Delhomme said his recovery is going great and that he hasn't had any setbacks. He said he hasn't thrown a deep pass yet, but did throw an equally difficult 15-yard out pass to Steve Smith Saturday.

Delhomme looked comfortable and at ease throwing.

So, it's thumbs up so far on his recovery, which is outstanding news for the Panthers.

In other news on Day 1 of camp:

-- Linebacker Jon Beason underwent wrist surgery Wednesday and didn't practice. He hopes to be back for the summer school practices in June. Rookie Dan Connor took Beason's place at middle linebacker.

-- Offensive tackle Jeff Otah also sat out with a recovering ankle injury. It's not serious and he likely could have played if the Panthers had a game this week. The team is simply being cautious. He isn't scheduled to practice during this minicamp.

-- Defensive end Julius Peppers was used extensively at right end. Coach John Fox said Peppers could be moved to the right side, or could stay at left end, where he has been for the first six seasons of his career.

-- Rookie third-round pick Charles Godfrey worked with the first team defense at free safety.

-- Keydrick Vincent, a free agent signee who played for the Arizona Cardinals last season, worked with the first team at right guard."

Peppers at RDE makes we think we're leaning towards starting Brayton at LDE

Could be a good move, I think he was always projected to be on the right side - Rucker was just already there

Right End is usually easier to get thru because most teams put their best tackle on the left to protect the QB's blindside if he's right handed

But teams can still stack the TE and double him if we're not getting any pressure elsewhere

I thought RE was where the LT lined up? and most teams run the TE to the weak side (RT).

Either way, I'm glad Connor can get some reps. We will need him.

Special teams definitely, but unless Beason stays injured, Connor isn't going to see much time this year.

Quote :
"While all the new linemen and the new running back and the return of Muhsin Muhammad were being chronicled, receiver D.J. Hackett spent last weekend's Carolina Panthers minicamp almost as a media afterthought, as in, "Oh yeah, Hackett looks pretty good, too."

And he did.

Although hordes of microphones and tape recorders swarmed the others, Hackett often left the field by himself. Don't expect it to be that way for long.

While fellow receiver Muhammad understandably drew considerable attention in his return to the city where he once starred, don't be surprised if Hackett, the younger and faster of the two, winds up grabbing the most playing time opposite Steve Smith.

Both will play in three-receiver sets, and neither seems to care if he takes the No. 2 or No. 3 role, at least publicly.

Which is the way the Panthers like it.

Because the bottom line is that double-teams on the talented Smith are likely to become fewer now, and that was the primary reason the two free agents were signed.

Hackett said the Panthers never promised him a starting role, and that he's fine with that. He's just happy to be part of what he sees as a talented group.

"I don't know much about what was here before, but from the looks of it now, it looks to be pretty good to me," he said. "We've got a lot of talent and some age out there as well, but not too old, so it looks good to me."

Hackett was standing by the practice field as he spoke. He's listed as 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, and looked every bit of it. It was apparent that he -- as well as the 6-2, 215-pound Muhammad -- could be the big receiver Carolina wants opposite the 5-9 Smith.

Hackett, 26, who was slowed by injuries with Seattle last season when he had 32 catches in six games, must learn the Panthers' way of doing things.

"It's just the same as when you go anywhere; it's a lot of hard work and a lot of thinking and getting in the books," he said. "Trying to get your plays down. It's a whole different system; different terminology, so that's always tough."

Making it tougher was the fact Hackett was coming from Seattle's West Coast offense to Carolina's more traditional approach.

"It's a big adjustment. Things are a little different. The timing of the routes and things like that are a lot more downfield as opposed to short passes. It's just a lot to get used to."

For Hackett, that's where guys like Smith and Muhammad come in.

"They know little things," Hackett said. "You can't go to the coach every time because he's worried about a lot of other things. The guys that are already here; you can learn a lot from them.

"I think their record speaks for itself. They're obviously good receivers, and teams are going to pay attention to all of us. So that will open it up for everybody."

That mirrors backup quarterback Matt Moore's take on things.

"D.J. and Moose have a lot of experience between them," Moore said. "They're just going to make this a better football team. They're going to come in, both of them with great attitudes, hard-working guys that really know how to play the game."

For Hackett, the social adjustment should be easy, because he's not really a West Coast guy.

"My family's from Mississippi, both sides, so I come back this way a lot," he said.

For now, most Panthers fans are probably talking about the return of the Moose. Before long, they'll know about D.J. Hackett as well."

I go. I have season tickets, and to be honest, I've been so drunk for all of the games that I don't remember what section they're in. But we tailgate out back of Hardigan's, which is an awesome lesbian bar.

Curtis Whitley found dead

Curtis Whitley, a center who started all 16 games of the Carolina Panthers' inaugural 1995 season, was found dead in Texas. He was 39 years old.

Family members said Monday night that they learned earlier in the day that Whitley, who turned 39 on Saturday, had been found dead in Texas, where he was living. They were awaiting details about the cause of his death.

Whitley, who was with the San Diego Chargers, was selected by the Panthers in the expansion draft and started every game during the team's first season. That season was played at Clemson's Memorial Stadium, where Whitley starred at during the early 1990s. He would start eight games during the 1996 season, but then was suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

He would come back and play for the Raiders in 1997, but was suspended again in '98 ... ending his career. It was originally thought that the suspensions were due to alcohol abuse, but Whitley later admitted that he was using crystal meth.

[Edited on May 13, 2008 at 2:40 PM. Reason : I know some of his family in Smithfield. Curtis has always battled addiction.]

ps: you can get season tickets in the upper deck for $480. well, not anymore but thats about the rate.

actually seats in the upper endzones are good views.

you can see the entire field and actually watch plays develop. i've sat down low for a few games and when the ball moves to the opposite end of the field its nearly impossible to tell yardages. plus with people standing up to go to the bathroom or whatever your view gets blocked.

i've got seats around the 20 yard line up in the 500 level but i love it...i like seeing the 11 on 11 action and all the blocking and schemes and holes and everything...some people would rather be a lot closer though

i understand your point, but this mentality is the reason our stadium gets a bad rep fanbase wise.

most games you can go down to the stadium and just scalp a ticket for cheap, especially if we arent doing good (which we havent been ) and the opponent sucks. so thats always an option

Plus there really aren't any bad views in that stadium. I've sat at the very top many times -- so high up you can literally rest your head on the stadium wall -- and I could see the field just fine.

Did I have a good time? Yes, but the panthers lost at the last second, which makes the walk out of the stadium pretty miserable. Is it worth the $40 I paid for a ticket? No.
