I've had saltwater tanks for about 10 years, but I have had the lionfish for about a year. I guess he was about 6 months old when I got him. Got him from my dad because he was killing everything in his tank. Now all I have in my tank is the lionfish, 2 stars, and 2 urchins. I put a couple crabs in there several months ago and he ate them within 2 days. The tank is 30 gallons, and he is about the size of a football.

the first one we got died over christmas because the water heater broke when no one was here ... he was pretty "domesticated" .. didnt eat a single fish and co-habitated well

but this new one we have has taken out every fish in the tank, besides the blue eyed jew fish and the eel

yeah, and I also heard they "stowaway" on ships that come in from Asia.

and that sting is potent as hell. when we were moving him my dad got stung and his whole hand swelled up. kind of like a jellyfish sting, but worse.

mine always puts his fins back when i put my hand in the tank so he doesn't sting me. I also taught him a couple tricks. he'll swim upside down so I'll throw in a treat. he'll also spit water out of the tank at me if I stand there for too long without throwing food in.

Saltwater is actually easier to maintain than freshwater imo. once you get it set up, it's really just a matter of doing regular water changes and topping it off with freshwater when it gets low.

^ yeah, he was trying to herd it into a bucket so I could take it home to my tank and one of the fins got him. my dad is pretty badass so I couldn't tell exactly how much pain he was in, but he said it hurt like hell

i never really trained him to spit the water, he just kind of did it on his own when I stood there with the lid open looking at him. kind of his way of saying "ok fucktard, either feed me or get the fuck out of my face"

they have crazy personality though, a lot like a dog. he recognizes me, and whenever i walk into the room starts to go crazy.

usually shrimp .. my roommate has something else for him that he feeds at times, but its all frozen, so the minute we go for the tupperware to thaw it out, he goes nuts.


the funny thing is, the eel only comes out of hiding when we feed the lion fish ... but ive watched that lion fish stalk a small blue fish, corner him and wait for 20 minutes to make the eventual attack .. animal planet shit and

I was feeding mine live goldfish for the first couple months i had him. then i realized it was more work taking care of the goldfish than it was the lionfish. although, i must admit, it was pretty badass watching him stalk the goldfish. I finally got him switched over to frozen silversides about 2 months ago, and he eats then out of my hand.

They're an invasive species on the eastern seaboard -- the current feeling is that a few were dumped from a saltwater aquarium down in Florida, and with no natural enemies in this area of the world they've multiplied like crazy.

Most marine biologists are saying "kill as many as you can" if you happen to be diving. Honestly though, since they're relatively pretty, most people just like to look at the pretty fish.
