Howard Stern never really got into politics. His shock value was mostly pornographic in nature. Glenn Beck is a far-right sensationalist who's tapping into white America's fear of a black president for ratings and it's coming back to bite him in the ass now. 8/13/2009 4:50:05 AM |

^^^ I'm not defending Beck's comments. I've been clear here that I don't really care for him.
And politics isn't the issue. YOU mentioned "shock value." Well, no broadcaster used to shock people more than Howard Stern--and when some advertisers began to dump him, others took their place because he was popular. If you can't see the analogy, then I can't help you. 8/13/2009 3:59:53 PM |
IMStoned420 All American 15485 Posts user info edit post |
I see the analogy. But surely you're not asserting that Beck and Stern have the same style of shock value. One can be replaced by a different brand of advertiser, the other is poison on any level. 8/13/2009 4:43:35 PM |

I light of this controversy, I DVR-ed today's Glenn Beck show. The following are the advertisers from just today's program:
Accu-Check Aviva (Roche) Binder & Binder Cinergy Health CPI Security DirectTV EasyWater Health Mart Johnson Law Group Lanacane Lear Capital Liberty Medical March of Dimes Merit Financial Psoriasin Pulaski & Middleman Restasis (Allergan) Rosland Capital Savewithregions.com The Wall Street Journal UPS U.S. Postal Service Zerowater.com
I eliminated the advertisers that were obviously local (Carolina Flooring, Crossroads Christian School, and Pulte Homes). It is difficult to determine what others on the list of advertisers may be local. It is clear, however, that many were national ads targeted at a national audience.
It doesn't appear that Glenn Beck is hurting for advertisers to me.

Why did hooksaw this turn into a discussion about ratings and advertisers?
I posted the video as more evidence of the insanity of Glenn Beck. I heard something about advertisers pulling support, and I thought it made sense given the kind of crap displayed in the video. I don't give a shit whether or not he still has advertisers or what his ratings are. Good for him. He is still insane and a destructive figure. 8/13/2009 7:50:15 PM |

Nice investigative reporting from the Fox reporter. He presumes that the White House is illegally sending out emails before he verifies what he is told by his sources.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_obama_health_care
The White House is sending out emails to supporters in which they are encouraged to forward them to others to start a chain email. The people who are complaining about getting unrequested emails are probably getting these from other people.8/14/2009 2:00:28 AM |

I'd say he's the reason why the right/repubs have not been taken seriously in a while. He gives off the persona of a normal person joking about stuff in a straight-forward manner. He is likeable and believeable and doesn't come off as a hack forcing points that don't make any sense (ala Beck, Hannity, Olberman, Maddow . . . they are all hacks).8/14/2009 10:19:50 AM |

the first -- and major -- problem is that you have attempted to steer discussion into investigating complex and multi-faceted social issues, smack in the middle of the 15th page of a slap fight about Fox News (!)
this is the sort of issue that deserves it's own thread.... but then you also have to provide some sort of general thesis or at least commentary on the video clip to start the discussion in an initial direction.
(as you probably know: generally speaking, bare links to pages or videos, without any sort of commentary by the poster, typically result in a lack of followup comments by others)
another problem is reflected in the nature of the video itself: 5 minutes of a dense monologue has become a curiosity these days. Current political media deals in soundbites, and the average American's attention span has been reduced to the order of a number of seconds.
this problem is evident in general discussion forums, when detailed discussions generate snarky responses like [WORDS], and [tl;dr]
but i watched it, and it's definitely interesting how much media has changed over the past couple generations. Ed Murrows' body language, tone, cigarette prop, use of cue cards, the choice of language --- not to mention the subject matter itself --- could spawn a lot of tangential discussion.
