Did Greg glassman go over the weak hips on day one or two of the thousand dollar seminar? And was that before or after he FAIlED out of BUDS? Do they have a bell you can ring at x-fit affiliates to symbolize the quit of its founder?Seriously, I was just saying...do some glute bridges or rack pulls and your hip strength will go up making your squat supass your deadlift. @BHS...since 2000.

because I took about a 4 year hiatus from all leg training. I still did the typical beach muscle, half-ass look in the mirror shit...basically a lot of bench, triceps, shoulders and biceps. only when I got back into Crossfit did I start training my legs again. I have a lot of catching up to do with my lower body from those years of neglect.
6/23/2011 4:11:12 PM
I don't give a patoot about how people train. Do crossfit, be a greg glassman worshiper, at least you do something But it is just what you said about "beach muscle" that is the problem with cross fit. You rip on guys who are not in your little collective. So a body builder who does cardio six times a week for an hour per session is not as good as a guy who can do 1/4 body weight deadlifts? GTF out with that. Most serious bodybuilders are stronger and in better shape than any douche I've ever met from an xfit. Or mocking specific training? A defensive end who weighs 295 lbs but squats 600 raw and incline benches 405 and runs a 4.8 forty yards isn't as fit as a guy who can do some ring dips? That is complete and total elitist bull nAnd don't get me started on team ROC. Reality of combat? Are you fucking serious? What is real if there is no threat of imminent death? They may be good fighters, and in great shape, but don't ever compare pugilism with towels and trainers to combat.[Edited on June 23, 2011 at 4:54 PM. Reason : Units]

I love doing beach muscles. one of the main reasons I workout is to look good naked. but there is a problem if that is all you do (as I was).you are the one with the chip on your shoulder provoking response.
6/23/2011 5:43:40 PM
if you want to look good naked, then squat deep.
6/23/2011 5:46:39 PM
I have good squat form.did heavy front squats tonight followed by 10x100m sprints. legs are toast
6/23/2011 5:55:40 PM
I picked up some TRX straps last week and these things kick ass when mixed into a crossfit workout. Combine the straps with some kettle balls and you can wear yourself out in a hurry....

Just finished my third out of six intro course and I can tell an enormous difference already. In the first class I was about dead after the warmup and finished second to last in the WOD. Today I finished first in the WOD by like two minutes. Granted it was a pretty easy workout compared to some of the real crossfit workouts but I can definitely see a lot of progress.

I am looking for a gym or program to join for the month that I have left in Raleigh. I looked at the crossfit raleigh site and it is pretty pricey. Can anyone tell me if it is worth it for a month, and for the $$?
7/25/2011 5:15:20 PM
^ I would look at it as the sum total of what it costs for a 6 month contract plus the initial fee. When I went there I did 6 months at a cost of about $900 IIRC. At the end of that 6 months I was 25 lbs lighter and saw huge increases in strength. My calves and quads were visibly bigger, my arms, shoulders, and traps were visibly bigger, my chest was bigger, etc. My cardio was through the roof. The net impact was that I could fight heavy surf all day, wakeboard all weekend, or snowboard all week without running out of steam. In addition, they will teach you proper mechanics on all the major lifts. After working out at Forged Fitness I felt comfortable walking into any gym, stacking plates on the bar, and doing my own workouts without fear that I was going to do something wrong or looking like a n00b. For me the end result was worth the $900 or whatever. I planned to go back last winter and do it again, but I was in a car wreck that killed any chances of lifting for a few months. There is just no extra time for me in the summer, but I may go back this winter if everything is clear with my back.[Edited on July 25, 2011 at 7:45 PM. Reason : s]

^^Pay $5, go to planet fitness and squat Monday, benchpress Wednesday, and do stiff legged Deadlifts on Friday. Do 5x5 for each. Throw in a few (2) assistance exercises for each at 3x10. Run sprints tues and thurs with a long run Saturday. You will be stronger, in better shape, and have more bang for your gym buck than elitist crossfitters.

Yeah, I'm still not lifting. I swam a ton in the spring and started back with bodyweight exercises (lunges, air squats, pushups, situps, etc.) earlier this summer. I try to work out 3-5 times a week, but I'm not going heavy with anything.I've tried a few sets of dead lifts, hang cleans, and push presses but it just doesn't feel like the right time yet. I'm lighter and stronger than I was last winter, but still having some shooting pain down the back of my leg when I walk up hills (Sciatica) that I don't want to aggravate.
7/26/2011 12:08:35 PM
Yeah, take it easy. I think that's one of the great things about x-fit is that it allows you to scale and replace workouts with something similar that might not aggravate an injury.
7/26/2011 1:01:16 PM
^yeah, because no other workout allows you to substitue at weight. it's not called the conjugate method or anything.bodybuilders ALWAYS do the same lifts for the same repsWestside powerlifters NEVER do different workouts. they only squat EVERY DAY!lets see, just for ME Lower body there are: squats, front squats, zercher squats, jefferson squats, sissy squats, box squats, high box squats, low box squats, overhead squats, hack squats, split squats, pistol squat, squat jumps, (and then multiply each by 3 with chains, bands, and weight releasers) (then multiply by neutral stance, wide stance, narrow stance, arched back, rounded back) (then multiply by power bar level, olympic bar level, neutral bar level) (and then multiply by safety bar, power bar, sissy bar, EZ curl bar, buffalo bar, football bar, and fat bar) dead lifts, sumo dead lifts, deadlifts arms outside legs, deadlifts arms inside legs, 1 arm deadlifts, dumbell deadlifts, romanian/dimmel/stiff legged/neutral stiff legged/wide stiff legged deadlifts, rack pulls, high rack pulls, low rack pulls, lunges deficeit lunges, ad nauseum.LOL. only crossfiters would be so arrogant to think that they invented changing exercises for workouts.

I'm a month in and I am loving it. My only complaint is that sometimes my shortness is a disadvantage. I couldn't do burpee pullups this morning because I couldn't reach the lowest bar well enough to incorporate them for timed sets . And also it makes my hips hurt a lot because they suck, but that has been getting a little better.
7/27/2011 6:12:04 PM
I think everyone hates burpees.I just hate them a little bit more than everyone else.0 burpees in a year and a half for me.I forgot to mention G.O.D that I'm pretty sure Forged Fitness still does a free week if you want to give it a shot. You'll know after a few trips to the gym if it is right for you.[Edited on July 27, 2011 at 8:15 PM. Reason : l]

I like burpees when they are over. Side note: Is it normal to call them burpees with no pushup at the bottom and super burpees with the pushup? I have never heard that before but that is the terminology they use at the Cary place.
7/27/2011 8:22:00 PM
Maximus is the strongest individual on this entire site, as evidenced by his willingness to post how much he enjoys lifting heavy things and then putting them back down.
7/27/2011 8:24:33 PM
^^ Never heard thatA burpee is typically chest and thighs touch the floor then up to a jump, perpendicular to the floor
7/27/2011 9:09:08 PM
Yeah that caught me a little off guard. My first day in we got to burpees and someone asked me if I knew what they were. I said yes, and they started doing them without the pushup and I kind of went o.O and they said what I was thinking of were super burpees. I was like, no, but OK. [Edited on July 27, 2011 at 9:20 PM. I know you don't like wall balls but they don't look that bad to me. Granted I haven't done them yet and they will probably destroy me, especially if you say they suck haha. Would you compare them to smash balls? I like those as long as the reps aren't too high, we had a cash out Monday with 50 of them for time and around 35 it started getting pretty rough.

It's not hypocritical for two reasons...1) I encourage others to train, not be the worthless weaklings they are2) Crossfit only encourages you to do Crossfit, which makes you good at Crossfit; nothing else. They'd have you believe all other training methods don't work.
8/6/2011 1:09:47 PM

Bill and caroline? Yeah. I can lift more than both of them. Caroline is a female and it wouldn't be fair, but the 350 LB deadlift is impressive. Bill is my hooker and I don't feel it would be right to compare against a teammate. But, since he is 6 inches shorter than me, yes, more than both of them. But, Bill is my #2, and I would go to hell on a rocket for that man.Small world, ain't it?
8/6/2011 5:49:22 PM
Well they're both Crossfit fanatics and you obviously have a good amount of respect for the both of them...but not for Crossfit? Maybe it's just the current "fad" that Crossfit is going through that brings with it a lot of people who aren't really serious about working out (although I don't think you can be serious about Crossfit and not be serious about working out).Just trying to figure out this bad taste in your mouth about Crossfit.

The workout is what it is...some people like it, others don't. That is fine. At least it's something. But, the Greg Glassman worshipers (and him) who claim there is no other way really piss me off. I just strongly feel there are some dangerous aspects of the program, that people who are not familiar with other programs, that could seriously injure them or give them bad habits. I don't like high rep Olympic work, it's pointless. As is a kip pullup. Otherwise, most of the workouts are pretty solid, it's not really the program, it's more the 10% who swear you can never be fit unless you do crossfit. And you know as well as I that CBA would be fit no matter what she did. BA also. They are the exception, not the rule.
