i don't see what the problem is... i'm guessing it's just a fluke with my address... our house is the first one on this side of the street. when we signed up for TWC, they had it in their computers that the house was not rigged up for cable. Never could get in the TW box on the side of the complex (TW said that the complex should have a key, the complex said that TW was the only people with a key) so I picked up some cat5e and ran it under the molding/carpet to two rooms (also gives me a wired connection to the ps3 )
I am extremely happy with the service. It is nice to be able to sit at work and schedule recordings. Also helps when I am out and remember I forgot to schedule something and can schedule recordings with my iphone.

I checked the site and im finally eligable (yay! of course I didn't get an email tho)...got a few questions for whoever
1) Whats the deal with the two HD streams? How many HD streams can I record/watch at once?
2) Whats the best promotion to sign up under? I know they used to have some Gift Card thing but I can't find it on their website. Is their any variance with their monthly rates? I know a few years back with TWC if you signed up with one of those door to door guys the deal was much better...
3) What happens after 6 months, pricing wise? I go back to paying more than I was with AT&T? Or is it the same old game of threating to leave and seeing what they do?
4) Is the DVR of sufficent size to serve as the single DVR for an entire house? Is it at least bigger than TWC's 8300 boxes?
5) I've read through most of this thread, but can someone break down anything thats currently worse with U-Verse vs TWC? Anything you miss about TWC, service or equipment wise?
Thanks for any info peoples. 11/9/2009 2:46:12 PM |

You can record 2 HD and 2 non-HD channels at one time. If you've got 4 things recording, I'm pretty sure you have to watch 1 of them. If you've got 2 HD things recording and you don't want to watch either of them at that time, then you'll have to watch something non-HD.
Regardless of how you slice it, it's 10x better than TWC's DVR ever wanted to be...]11/9/2009 2:48:34 PM |

they change all of the time... I haven't look recently, so I'll abstain
3) What happens after 6 months, pricing wise? I go back to paying more than I was with AT&T? Or is it the same old game of threating to leave and seeing what they do?
nothing happens, unless you take a 6 month promotion at sign-up, in which case, you can most likely argue your way back down. the one promotion we're on is 1 year of free HD, which I'm confident I can argue to keep it free after one year. other than that, their standard pricing (as shown on the website) stays - no random increases
4) Is the DVR of sufficent size to serve as the single DVR for an entire house? Is it at least bigger than TWC's 8300 boxes?
we've got hundreds of shows recorded, mostly HD... not sure on capacity, but far much more storage than TWC

i believe it has to be twisted pair from the vrad to the demarcation point. inside the house, they can reuse your old wiring (coax or twisted pair) depending on what shape it's in

They are coming today.
I will try to get some pics of all of the hardware.....I have been trying to look online to find out exactly how it is wired, best I can tell they only use CAT5 if you do not have coax that is in good condition and would suffice.
I also got the $200 cash back offer.....I think this is basically a "buyout" of my DirecTV contract. I thought I had signed up for 18 months, DTV is saying its 24 months. I cant find the paperwork of course since it has been 18 months but I will fight them on it if necessary.
They are saying since I got HD service its a 24 instead of 18 month commitment which is a load of crap. They changed the price two months ago and its almost $100 now it used to be under $70. I called to get it put back and they guy gave me a $60 one time credit and said that's all he can do. 11/11/2009 11:54:15 AM |

So while I am not in the area I found out that the determining factor in seeing if you can have service is the distance of your address from their station. right now it is set at 3,000 or less which in most metro areas is plenty. They are looking at upgrading some of the technology associated with u-verse and that it could reach around 5-6,000 feet in about 6 months. 11/15/2009 8:15:06 PM |

I had the same issue with Windstream. The guy behind me can get 12Mbps down for $20/month, but they told me my house is exclusively in Bellsouth's service area.
If you really just want your uplink above 1Mbps... I get that just by plugging my Sony Ericsson phone into my computer... AT&T charges about $15/month for unlimited data, so it works out pretty well if you have an HSUPA-capable device.
I'm not about to get u-verse, I currently pay $1/month for unlimited domestic home phone using a VoIP service $15/month for 3mbps down and 1mbps up internet at home via HSPA (although i might go with the $30 3mbps down / 1mbps up with clearwire to keep my connection while I'm away from home... or keep alternating those 6Mbps $30/month intro plans with Earthlink and TWC) $0/month for about 6 local HD channels and a dozen SD channels over antenna (considering buying the Dish Network $30/month to get another 50 HD channels including Comedy Central HD and a nice HD-DVR... but Hulu is enough for now)
So home phone, high speed internet, and local HDs costs me about $16/month plus the cost of equipment you are BUYING instead of leasing (can even use a Mac/PC as a DVR). It might be worth it if you really need 18Mbps downlink, but if you just want a lot of channels and no cell phone plan... there are cheaper alternatives IMHO

HERE IS A LIST OF THINGS SO FAR THAT ARE CRAP ABOUT THE SERVICE
- There is no "prioritizer" to put your shows in order. If you like to just have random shows in there to watch when you are bored you have to be careful because it will bump off important shows that come on at specific times. For instance, I like to watch COPS episodes when I am bored. It does not matter if it skips an episode because they are pretty much all random re-runs. I also like to watch Fox Report, that being a news show I want it to record every day. The dumbass DVR will record COPS over the shows the important shows. Direct TV never did this you could put all of your recordings in order of importance and if it could not do them all it would at least do them in order.
- It is even more crap that there is not a prioritizer because since there can only be 4 streams in your house at a time, a person upstairs turning their TV on can stop your shows from recording, and since there is not a prioritizer it will probably stop the show you wanted the most vs the show you wanted the least.
- I think the "whole house DVR" is over rated. It might be fine if its just you and your gf/wife or something.....but if you have room mates you are sharing everything. All of the shows record on the main box, if someone in another room wants to watch TV it messes up the recordings or viewings on the main TV.
Specific Example: Tonight I am watching & recording a show, I have a bunch of other stuff recording that is not very important, halfway through the show I go piss and fix something to eat. I come back and since my room mate flipped to an HD channel (HD counts as 2 of your 4 streams) it stopped the show I was actually watching from recording despite having a DVR I missed a chunk of it and it was not recording.
There are a TON of HD channels, it is also nice that they are all grouped together. That way when flipping channels you can go to the HD section if all you want to flip through is HD. The menus are way faster than they were on my DirecTV box, but its bullshit that someone upstairs can unknowingly boot somebody off the TV downstairs.
I would compare it to back in the day having dial up and your mom kicking you off the internet when she accidentally picked up the phone to call somebody.]11/16/2009 11:48:13 PM |

I agree, I don't have the same bandwidth requirements as some of those in this thread, but once you're watching more TV than a $30-$40 plan can buy (should get you over 100 channels on Dish... I get ads for $20/month for 12 months through local resellers), it's time to think about getting out more. My biggest complaint about Dish is that a lot of apartment complexes don't allow you to exercise your legal requirement to ground the dishes properly.
Plus, there's nothing illegal about tethering on AT&T. It's only T-Mobile that has banned tethering... unless you use an iPhone in which case yeah, it's banned by AT&T as well. Of course, I tend to question the legality of whatever causes people on WolfWeb to require 18Mbps.
As for sticking it to TimeWarner... although they rebrand ClearWire as "Road Runner Mobile", you can stick it to TW by just going straight to ClearWire for WiMax internet. Most people should be ok with 6down/1up for $45.11/17/2009 3:24:18 PM |

FWIW, not everyone eligible for U-Verse can get 2 HD streams (points at self). I signed up recently with the understanding (and being told) that you could get 2HD/2SD only to find out that my particular node (or whatever they call it) has bandwidth restriction so that I can only get 1HD/3SD, which pissed me the fuck off. Six hours on the phone could not find me someone who was able to change it or tell me if it was even capable of being changed, so I settled for $10 off my bill for 3 months until I get the $200 Visa Check card back they are offering (comes in the mail after 1 month of service). Once that card comes in, cable is getting dropped something quick in favor of streaming/torrented shows. It's certainly not worth $65 a month to watch the few State games that are going to be on TV.
In all, I'm terribly disappointed in the situation that I found myself in. It's not cheap, but it's a LOT better (unless you happen to live behind a bandwidth capped node). Make sure you specifically ask if you'll have 2 HD streams if that's important to you.11/17/2009 3:49:12 PM |

yeah TWC alerts you that you have to stop recording something to change a channel, and lets you choose what to stop...it doesn't just randomly stop something. They need to fix that...at least have a warning pop up.
So if I'm recording two HD shows on my DVR, I won't be able to watch TV anywhere else in the house without killing one of my recordings...which happens as soon as I turn the tv/box on, without alerting me?
Quote : | "I got $200 cash back to "buy out" my direct TV contract." |
Their U200 double plan comes with $200 cash back (for whoever), plus an extra $50 or $100 that you get from the chat person who helps you order. Seems to be the best deal going atm.

If I owned an apartment complex I wouldn't allow people to put dishes all over the complex either. I'd say it's their buildings, their land, and their decision. If that was a big deal for someone then they should check before signing a lease.
