Was that the (Deraney?) field-goal-as-time-expires game?

Not to be nit-picky but aren't they all 'must go stops' if you plan on seeing all the ACC stadiums?

^^ I thought that was when the VT kicker had the chance to win on a FG but missed as time expired?

^^ yeah I worded that poorly. I should have said it is one of the must see ACC stadiums. I want to see all of the ACC stadiums, but I can understand why some people wouldn't care to go to Duke's or BC's stadium.

No it was the 17-16 win where their kicker, who had earlier had pictures posted on the internet of him illegally drinking, missed a FG wide right as time expired. Some VT fans are still mad about the game b/c it was their only loss in-conference that year and they thought that the spotting of the ball by the ref was wrong and if they had gotten it right then he would have made it. One guy came up with all these mathematical projections of where the ball would have ended up going had it been at the spot that they thought it should have been at. We had 10 sacks on Bryan Randall that day!

Yeah, that was it. Brandon Pace shanked one at the end.

I remembered the field goal attempt and the celebration, my game memory is shit, though.

I am in the endzone in that pic, I think VT had less than 50 yards total offense that game, I know they were in the negative at one point. Great game.

I think my favorite Marcus Stone memories when he was playing QB where when he "stoned" the FSU linebacker and the karate kick looking leap he did one time.

Of course the best memory was when he scored the TD as a TE against UNC and immediately turned and pointed to the student section.

Southern Pigskin's preseason top 25 has us at #25:
Quote :
"Quietly NC State has one of the nation's premier quarterbacks in Russell Wilson. The two sport star is a big time athlete and after throwing for almost 2,000 yards last year and 17 touchdowns, look for a bigger season this coming fall. Defensively the Pack must get better defending the pass. The season opener September 3rd against rival South Carolina will be a war.
"

http://www.southernpigskin.com/index.php/site/national_top_25/

It's an interesting top 25 to say the least, I think that ECU at #24, WVU at #23, Wake Forest at #21 and UNC at #9 are pretty questionable picks.

NC State's 1895 football team

This article tells their story of how they were the first State football team to leave the state for intercollegiate play as well as them deciding to change their colors from brown and white to red and white.
http://www.gopack.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9200&ATCLID=1603140

It also details the 1907 team that won the school's first ever championship of the South. Their 10-4 victory over Virginia in Norfolk in front of 8,000 fans gave them the championship, the first championship in any sport for the school.

NC State's 1907 football team

Quote :
"“We have come to Norfolk with unquestionably the best team from North Carolina, a team that has won the privilege of claiming the championship of the South Atlantic States below Virginia,” said AMC coach Michie Whitehurst. “North Carolina’s best team is here to contest Virginia for the championship of the South. We will make an honest, open, manly fight, and we hope to win. We don’t expect a cinch, but one of the hardest-fought games ever played.”"

Quote :
"But, in reality, the AMC team was in despair. Two players, including star freshman fullback Frank Thompson, were ruled ineligible for the game."

Damn NC State shit was even happening back then too, but at least we still won.

Quote :
"Raleigh celebrated for days, with students from the city’s three women’s colleges meeting the team at the railway station. (nice ) The team was paraded down Hillsboro Street and to the Governor’s Mansion, where the cadets yelled for Gov. Glenn to come out and celebrate their victory."

It's interesting how profound of an impact three of the players on that team (D.T. “Dutch” Seifert, Frank Thompson, and John Von Glahn) had on our university's athletics.

Quote :
"Three of the heroes of that team were Seifert, Thompson and John Von Glahn, all of whom had a profound influence on the development of NC State athletics. In 1940, Seifert and 17 other prominent NC State alumni founded the Wolfpack Club, one of the oldest football booster organizations in the country.

Thompson, even though he did not play in the final game, was one of the school’s greatest all-round athletes. He later became both the football and baseball coach at NC State and Wake Forest, before he was killed in action France in World War I. Thompson Gym, which opened in 1925 and is now known as Thompson Theater, is named in his honor.

And Von Glahn, in his role of school athletics manager in the mid-1940s, was instrumental in hiring basketball coach Everett Case."

Southern Pigskin has Owen Spencer as their #8 receiver in the ACC/SEC:
Quote :
"8. Owen Spencer, NC State - Spencer may be the top big-play threat on this list as he averaged 22.3 yards per catch last season which was good for third nationally. Roughly one out of every six of his receptions was for touchdown."

Quote :
"Owen Spencer of NC State is another player who could skyrocket up this list with a strong start. "

http://www.southernpigskin.com/index.php/site/acc_sec_wr_rankings/

They obviously didn't watch us play much last year or they would have mentioned something about his uncanny ability to get open and then subsequently drop a perfectly placed ball.

also, Heather Dinich rated Willie Young as one of the top DE's in the ACC:
Quote :
"Willie Young, NC State: Nobody on the Wolfpack's roster has more experience than Young's 1,667 snaps. He led the team with 26 quarterback pressures last season, and led in tackles for loss (12.5) and sacks (6.5). Young now ranks 11th in school history with 31.5 career tackles for loss."

Wolfpack senior Ted Larsen has been named to the Spring Watch List for the 2009 Rimington Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s top center.
The Palm Harbor, Fla., native was a key to the Wolfpack’s success last season as he started every game after moving over to offense from the defensive line in the spring of 2008.

Larsen, who earned the team’s Jim Ritcher Award for the Most Outstanding Offensive lineman, was in for 730 snaps from scrimmage last year, the second-highest total among offensive players returning for 2009.

i dreamt last night that i was in Carter-Finley stadium at the NCSU vs USC game, and i was really really drunk and couldnt see anything, and i was freaking out because i couldn't even see the field.

so i kept rubbing my eyes over and over, until my eyes just popped out of their sockets.

security escorted me out to the fairgrounds where i ate a delicious turkey leg.

^ahahahahah!!! nice. "cocaine is a helluva drug."

That's funny about being too drunk to be able to see the field. I actually was too drunk at one game last year, that I couldn't stop seeing double and it was incredibly frustrating. I watched the whole first quarter with one hand covering one eye. The wifey gave me so much hell, but in hindsight, I'm proud of myself

It's just a watch list. I say talk to Larsen about and say to him, "hey you are pretty good and are getting some recognition. Imagine though if you won the award though. If you work hard enough, that could become a reality." Good coaches use these kind of things as motivation. Great players are never contempt with just being one of the best at their position, they want to be the actual number one guy at the position.

ok, im officially worried about the QB situation

Quote :
"GASTONIA - The Gastonia Grizzlies baseball team has signed one of the Atlantic Coast Conference's top football players for this summer.

He's a pretty good baseball player, too.

N.C. State quarterback and infielder Russell Wilson will suit up for the Grizzlies this summer. Although his football duties will keep Wilson from playing the entire season, general manager Jesse Cole thought it was a no-brainer to sign him.

"The scout from the Pirates said, ‘If you could have him for one day, I'd take him,'" Cole said.

Wilson, a 5-foot-11, 208-pound sophomore, will play second base for the Grizzlies. Cole expects him to play through June before reporting back to Raleigh for football camp.

Although he's better known as a football player, Wilson has a strong baseball background. He was drafted out of high school in the 41st round by the Baltimore Orioles.

This season at N.C. State, he batted .236 with 10 RBIs and two doubles in 27 games for the 25-31 Wolfpack. He also fielded 15 double plays. The Richmond, Va., native earned all-state baseball honors all four years at Collegiate High School. As a senior, he was also named all-metro after batting .536 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. He also pitched a 6-2 record with 52 strikeouts and a 1.83 ERA.

After redshirting his first football season at N.C. State, Wilson burst onto the scene last season, passing for 1,955 yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 388 yards and four TDs. He was named ACC rookie of the year and first-time All-ACC quarterback after leading the Wolfpack to its first bowl appearance since 2005.

Cole called Wilson one of the best athletes in the country.

"I think he's going to be a really exciting player to watch," Cole said. "He's a big-time prospect."

The Grizzlies need all the players they can get - especially at the start of the season. Four or five pitchers suffered major injuries and another 10 will miss opening night as their college teams compete in the postseason.

You can reach Phillip Gardner at 704-869-1843."

he has the right to do what he wants, but he is not helping our football team in any way at this point in preparing for a potentially exciting year.

Well lets look on the bright side, playing minor league baseball wont take him out of shape for the fall.

He has the potential to make it as a two sport professional athlete like Deion Sanders.

But Id MUCH rather sign Russell Wilson as a QB for my football squad then for his slugging skills.

Stay safe Russell and hoping you pass for 3,000 yards this season! GO PACK!
