Also, Big Orange Winter Caravan dates/locations released, I went to the summer one, had a lot of fun, got to meet Kiffin, Bruce, etc.
Quote : | "The University of Tennessee Athletics Department and the Tennessee Fund office has announced the 2009-10 Coca-Cola Big Orange Caravan Winter Tour schedule of events, featuring former student-athletes in 20 cities throughout Tennessee and surrounding states.
“These events allow us the opportunity to meet even more of our great fans across the state as well as neighboring states,” Men’s Athletics Director Mike Hamilton said. “The more interaction I have with fans, the more I’m convinced that Vol fans are the best fans in the nation.”
The Coca-Cola Big Orange Caravan Winter Tour officially kicks off at Saturday’s Tennessee Fund Donor Appreciation Day, which takes place prior to the football game against South Carolina. Always a crowd favorite, this year’s official “Tennessee Fund” T-shirt will be on sale at Thompson-Boling Arena.
This year’s Winter Tour schedule consists of a variety of events, including several men’s and women’s basketball game viewing parties as well as a pre-game event when the men’s basketball team takes on MTSU at Nashville’s Sommet Center in December.
Coca-Cola Big Orange Caravan Winter Tour events are free and open to all Tennessee fans and are designed to bring UT closer to the hometown of Vols and Lady Vols supporters. These casual events feature former student-athletes as well as current UT Alumni and Athletic Department staff.
“We will have 20 events scheduled on this tour and I encourage all fans to come out and show your spirit,” Women’s Athletics Director Joan Cronan said. “I am looking forward to better knowing our fans this winter.”
Below is a list of cities hosting Coca-Cola Big Orange Caravan events this winter. Venue locations will be announced closer to the event date and all times are subject to change. Information regarding event times and locations are continually updated on the Tennessee Fund section of UTsports.com or UTladyvols.com, or you can call the Tennessee Fund office for more information at (865) 974-1218.

Quote : | "Instant Analysis - Oct. 31
Tennessee 31 ... South Carolina 13
Pete Fiutak
Remember where Tennessee was last year at this time. Heck, remember where Tennessee was in a 19-15 loss to UCLA on September 12th. This was a punchless team with little production from the passing game in what appeared to be a rebuilding and adjusting year before Lane Kiffin could truly sink his teeth into the program. But along the way, Kiffin showed he could coach a little bit (even with the issues at the end of the Alabama loss), the defense stayed strong, and now, the Vols look like they have something special happening going forward.
The key over the final four games, and a bowl, will be to find some consistency. If the Vols are good enough to come within a blocked kick of beating Alabama, and were able to blow out South Carolina, then they need to roll through Memphis, at Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and at Kentucky. Kiffin is getting the pieces in place that he needs to make the offense truly hum, and if the last few weeks are any indication, watch out. The Mouth from the South might have a national title juggernaut brewing.
Richard Cirminiello
You want to figure out which Tennessee team is going to show up on a given weekend? Find a way into Vol QB Jonathan Crompton’s head.
Throughout the season, as Crompton goes, so go the Volunteers. It’s really been that simple. He’s the one variable on a program that’s been able to run the ball with Montario Hardesty and Bryce Brown, and has been consistently terrific on defense. Just look at the numbers for proof; when Crompton has thrown for more touchdowns than interceptions in a game, Tennessee is 4-1. When he comes up short, UT is 0-3.
Saturday’s pivotal win over South Carolina was yet another example of Crompton’s importance to what Lane Kiffin is trying to build in his first season in Knoxville. The defense was oppressive and Hardesty and Brown combined for 180 yards and two scores on the ground, but it was the senior quarterback who helped tipped the scales in the Volunteers’ favor. He had an efficient evening, throwing two touchdown passes without a turnover, helping keep his team in the hunt for a return to the postseason.
Matt Zemek
1) Proving that last week’s strong, sturdy, tough and tenacious performance against Alabama wasn’t just a one-game rivalry-based aberration; Tennessee showed polish and precision in the first 25 minutes on offense. Lane Kiffin did a superb job preparing his team for this game, and with this backyard win against a native son of Tennessee, Steve Spurrier, the Vols’ head coach stands to win a lot more recruiting battles in the coming years. This win will carry some mileage for a program that’s definitely on the way back to prominence.
2) Gee, it’s the “Orange Section” back end of a South Carolina season schedule. We’ve seen this movie before in the Palmetto State. Could one say more? Possibly. Does one need to say more about the Gamecocks? Nope. It will take at least another year for this program to stitch together a stellar season that doesn’t endure extreme fluctuations of quality and performance.
Michael Bradley
We may be getting ahead of ourselves here, but it would appear as if Lane Kiffin has something going on in Knoxville – finally. Saturday’s win over what had been a stout, albeit hardly overwhelming, Ball Coached Team gives Tennessee four wins on the season, and with Memphis, staggering Mississippi, Vandy and Kentucky left on the schedule, we should see seven or even eight regular-season wins for the Vols, who looked to be in trouble earlier in the season. But a closer look shows UT was close to getting it right the whole time. It lost to Florida by 10, Auburn by four and Alabama by two. The strength of the team is the defense, but running back Montario Hardesty is becoming more and more of a weapon, and QB Jonathan Crompton is improving. If those two begin to produce every week, and Monte Kiffin’s D continues to be as strong as it has been all season (it has held opponents to fewer than 20 points in six of eight games), Tennessee could cruise through the rest of its schedule without a loss. That would be pretty bad news for the rest of the SEC, because it would mean that in addition to being a great recruiter and world-class agitator, Kiffin might be able to coach some, too." |
Quote : | " 21. Tennessee 4-4 Last Week: W, South Carolina 31-13 Next Week: Memphis Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Vols are playing well at the right time. After the loss to Auburn, Tennessee blew away Georgia, pushed Alabama to the wall, and whacked a good South Carolina team. The defense is rocking and the O is playing well. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: It shouldn’t be. The ranking is this low based on the early part of the season, but Tennessee is playing like a top 15 team. " |

Quote : | "Tennessee’s football team likely picked up some immediate help via two junior college commitments on Sunday.
First, the Vols picked up Ken Adams from Copiah-Lincoln Community in Wesson, Miss., when the 6-foot-5, 240-pounder pledged to be a Vol early Sunday.
UT followed that up with a commitment from Kenbrell Thompkins, a 6-3, 190-pound receiver from El Camino Community College in Torrance, Calif. Thompkins is considered one of the top junior college receiver prospects in the nation. He has scholarship offers from Florida, Alabama, LSU and Arizona among others.
Adams made his decision during his official visit to Knoxville this weekend.
“I like everything about Tennessee,” he said. “Good atmosphere, I enjoyed myself at the game.”
Adams picked the Vols over Auburn and said he is trying to get his academics in order so he can enroll in January.
Adams is having a strong season as a defensive end with 40 tackles, 10 sacks, two passes broken up, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. The Vols, however, are recruiting him as a tight end, the position he played in 2008.
Adams said UT might also use him as a third-down, pass-rush specialist. He said he has no preference between the two positions.
“I’ve been playing tight end since high school,” he said. “It’s a good position. You get a lot of balls thrown. You’re involved in the offense a lot.”
UT could use immediate tight end help. UT’s top two tight ends, Luke Stocker and Jeff Cottam, are both upperclassmen. Stocker is a junior. Cottam is a senior.
“They don’t have that much depth,” Adams said.
UT receivers coach Frank Wilson was the primary recruiter in charge of luring Adams.
“He’s a real good guy,” Adams said. “He told me everything I needed to hear.”
Adams said he was first recruited by Wilson to UT in the spring. Wilson said then that he planned on offering Adams a scholarship and backed up that claim this weekend.
UT linebackers coach Lance Thompson also offered some familiarity. Thompson recruited Adams to Alabama out of Enterprise (Ala.) High School in 2008. Adams originally committed to Auburn.
Tennessee has 21 commitments for the 2010 class. The Vols are expected to sign 28 to 30 prospects." |

little old, but still good read:
Quote : | "KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Monte Kiffin is having a blast.
Most guys his age are already retired or at least thinking about it. The only thing the 69-year-old Kiffin is thinking about is that next blitz, that next coverage, that next opponent.
Besides, he's having too much fun to quit.
"I don't golf. I don't fish. I don't play tennis. I don't bowl. How am I going to retire?" Kiffin says, his voice rising in a machine gun-like tone that fluctuates from a whisper to a hearty chuckle.
"I've got news for those coaches recruiting against us, and I'm not going to say who they are, that are telling kids who want to come play for us that I'm going to retire. I ain't retiring. Haven't even thought about it. We've got too good a thing going here. I'm fired up. Every day I come to work, I get a little more fired up."
And with good reason.
His Tennessee defense is playing lights-out. The Vols haven't given up an offensive touchdown in eight quarters, a span of 133 minutes since an opposing offense has reached their end zone.
For that matter, they've only allowed one trip inside their 20-yard line in the past two games.
And here's the best part as they prepare for South Carolina's visit Saturday night (ESPN, 7:45 ET) at Neyland Stadium: This is just the beginning.
Kiffin, the gray stubble on his face telltale evidence of the long nights spent in the film room, nods glowingly when asked how much more he'll be able to do as the talent improves and players have a whole year in his system.
"I think we're going to be pretty darned good, especially with the way it looks like recruiting is going right now," he said.
His son, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin, is even more confident.
"I have to hold myself back sometimes because I look down the road and get so excited about how great we're going to be as we get people in that fit our system and we develop more depth and recruit more depth," Lane said. "It's going to be real exciting to see this team when you look at what's going on now with our defense -- some of the injuries, not a lot of depth and playing with some players that we love, but aren't necessarily system-fit players.
"I can't wait."
If he sounds like he's recruiting, he is.
Monte jokes that Lane and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron are never not recruiting.
"I look at him on Friday night before our game with Alabama last week, and he's got a phone to his ear," Monte said. "Some of the kids were calling him.
"I'm just having fun sitting back and watching it all, because this recruiting in the SEC is dog-eat-dog. Lane's not going to back down, either, and he's not going to quit on guys. That's not going to happen. He never quits thinking about recruiting. It's 24 hours."
And so is Monte.
He has more energy than most people in their 30s. And, yes, he's a little stooped as he approaches his 70s, and windy days wreak havoc with his familiar comb-over.
But when it comes to setting up a defense, getting players in position to make plays and scheming up the opposition, Monte remains well ahead of his time.
There aren't a lot of secrets, either. His trademark is the same as it was when he was running the famed "Tampa 2" with the Bucs.
It starts with being fundamentally sound in every area, keeping everything in front of you and not being predictable.
"If you're going to hit a pass on them, there's going to be somebody close to him when he catches it," said South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who coached against Monte when he was in his final season with the Redskins in 2003.
[+] EnlargeMonte Kiffin Joe Murphy/Getty ImagesMonte Kiffin quieted critics who questioned whether he could transition to the college game.
For the record, the Bucs won 35-13, collected six sacks and scored a defensive touchdown.
Spurrier said all of Monte's defenses look the same.
"His players are in position and play their assignments every play," Spurrier said. "That's what great offenses and defenses do. They're fundamentally sound, and there are very few mistakes by his players. And he gives them something they can do. They don't have 50 different defenses every play. They play their defense, and players have confidence and know what they're doing."
Set to make $1.5 million this season, including a retention bonus at the end of the year, Monte is far and away the highest paid assistant coach in college football.
But few would argue on Rocky Top that he hasn't been worth every penny.
It's an investment that will only continue to pay dividends as top defensive prospects around the country are lining up to play in Monte's NFL-style system.
The guy who brought him to Tennessee, his son, still gets a laugh out of some of the chatter that was out there about Monte having to make the adjustment from the NFL to the college game.
"I just smiled, because I knew what he was going to do with this defense," Lane said. "I actually heard it from recruits. Other coaches were telling them that. Funny how you don't hear that much anymore."
Monte is quick to point out that he cut his teeth in the college game, calling the defensive signals for Nebraska's 1970 and 1971 national championship teams under Bob Devaney.
"Coaching is coaching," Monte said. "Now if they put 12 on the field and we only have 11, then we've got a problem. But that hasn't happened yet. The field's the same. The hash marks are different. That's about the only difference, that and the time restraints you have with the players."
Monte's influence has been particularly noticeable this season at halftime. The Vols' defensive adjustments have almost always been on the money.
Not counting the opener against Western Kentucky, which was a rout by the second quarter, the Vols have given up just two offensive touchdowns in the second half all season.
They've allowed just 14 plays from scrimmage of 20 yards or longer, including only two in the past two games against Alabama and Georgia.
Only four times all season has Tennessee's defense given up a play that was longer than 25 yards.
The only real blip on the Vols' defensive résumé this season came after middle linebacker Nick Reveiz was hurt in the Ohio game, and his absence was glaring the next week against Auburn when the Vols were breaking in Savion Frazier at that position. Frazier hadn't played middle linebacker since the eighth grade.
But he's played much better the past two games, and so have the Vols.
"We're not the Steel Curtain or anything like that by any means, and we've been playing banged-up a little bit," Monte said. "But the players are playing extremely hard right now and understanding what we're trying to get done."
The old guy coaching them ain't half bad, either." |
part in bold is the biggest difference, Fulmer and Chavis NEVER adjusted. They just stayed the course and assumed that better athletes would win out, and it did for a long time, but when other teams started getting better talent, it all went to shit.11/2/2009 11:43:15 AM |

Quote : | "Steve Spurrier is longing for Florida.
Not Gainsville, although you could certainly understand why the Ol' Ball Coach would wish he were back in Gator country after failing to recreate his success at South Carolina.
No, Spurrier is longing for Destin. It was there, at an elevator inside the Sandestin Hilton, that Spurrier supposedly put Tennessee's Lane Kiffin in his place.
As it turned out, that moment outside the elevator at the SEC's spring meetings—where, according to various accounts, Spurrier confronted Kiffin over comments the rookie Vols coach had made—is all Spurrier has. At least for this year.
The old Mouth of the South was supposed to shut up the new Mouth of the South at Neyland Stadium Saturday night. After all, Kiffin had insulted Spurrier's dignity. He supposedly told South Carolina's Alshon Jeffery that Jeffery would wind up pumping gas for a living. And, as everyone knows, Spurrier is at his best when he's offended.
It didn't take Spurrier (who made a career out of getting under the skin of his rivals in the 1990s) long to set his sights on Kiffin when Kiffin arrived in Knoxville last December. Spurrier dipped into his old bag of tricks, accusing Kiffin—albeit in a round-about way—of committing a recruiting violation by calling on prospects before he had passed his NCAA-mandated compliance test. It was vintage Spurrier, who in 1994 said Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer was making excuses for not winning and nicknamed Georgia's Ray Goff, Ray "Goof."
But in Kiffin, Spurrier found a coach who refused to sit idly by as he had his fun. Kiffin fired back that he had scored a 39 out of 40 on his test, and asked to see Spurrier's score. He later said that Spurrier hadn't apologized for accusing him of a recruiting violation. That drew the ire of Spurrier, and led to the confrontation at the elevator bank in Destin. And what we learned was that the Ol' Ball Coach is pretty good at dishing it out, but not so good at taking it.
Virtual high-fives were exchanged on Internet chat forums in Gainsville and Tuscaloosa after the wily veteran showed up the boy wonder in Destin. And rival fans were still living vicariously through Spurrier when the Gamecocks rolled into Knoxville for Saturday's Halloween clash with Kiffin's Vols.
After all, Spurrier was the last opportunity for the SEC to shut up Kiffin. Other coaches had tried, and failed.
Kiffin accused Florida's Urban Meyer of cheating. Using the best quarterback he'll ever have, Meyer was supposed to humiliate Kiffin in The Swamp. Instead, Florida had to settle for grinding out a 23-13 win that didn't even halfway cover the spread.
Kiffin had supposedly insulted Georgia's Mark Richt by saying that Memphis recruit Marlon Brown's grandmother made him sign with the Dawgs instead of the Vols. Georgia rolled into Knoxville on Oct. 10 and was smacked in the mouth, 45-19, as Kiffin picked up his first conference win.
But surely Alabama could do it. Playing at home as the nation's No. 1 team, the Tide had also been on the receiving end of some of Kiffin's smack talk, after the Tennessee coach crowed in February that he had stolen Saban's best recruiter, Lance Thompson. As it turned out, the Tide needed two blocked field goals to escape with a 12-10 victory over Tennessee.
So, it was all on Spurrier. The hopes of Gators, Dawgs and elephants and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive (sorry, Mike; don't fine me!) were heaped on the shoulders of Spurrier as the cocky old coach led his Gamecocks into Knoxville. Final score: Tennessee 31, South Carolina 13. For Spurrier, who—without calling him by name—said Kiffin was "stupid" for holding physical pre-season practices, it was his most lopsided loss to a Tennessee team since 1990, his own rookie year in the SEC.
All of this from a first-year coach who may have the least-talented team he will ever have at Tennessee.
Therein lies the source of rival fans' hatred of Kiffin. It isn't so much his mouth--though Kiffin does tend to be loose-lipped and, frankly, should learn when to talk it and when to zip it. It's the direction in which the program in Knoxville is headed.
Critics scoffed at Kiffin's losing record in the NFL. They proclaimed that he would fall on his face at a big-time college program. And when Tennessee was shocked by UCLA 19-15, at Neyland Stadium in early September, they sat back with satisfied smiles and said, "Yep. Told you so."
Less than two months later, rival fans who haven't stopped laughing or scoffing aren't paying attention to what's going on in Knoxville, or they're ignoring the obvious. When Kiffin joked to reporters in December 2008 that he looked forward to "singing Rocky Top all night long" after beating Florida this year, it sounded ridiculous. When he told ESPN's Erin Andrews Saturday night that Tennessee is "building a championship program," it didn't sound ridiculous at all.
And that scares rival SEC fans. The evidence isn't hard to find. Listen to what they say. Read what they write. And understand: They have seen the writing on the wall, and they don't like what it says. The SEC had become all about Florida and Alabama over the past two years. Tennessee is about to be factored into that equation in a big way.
While some are being distracted by Kiffin's talk—going so far as to proclaim that the SEC's tougher penalties for coaches who criticize officials was all about Kiffin, despite the fact that Kiffin was but one of four coaches in the league to lash out at officials over the last three weeks—Kiffin is quietly going about the task of doing exactly what he said he was doing on ESPN Saturday night.
There was a Top 10 recruiting class in 2009. A heavy dose of discipline within the program, with players' grades going up and zero off-the-field incidents since Kiffin arrived on campus. Tennessee's defense has given up just one offensive touchdown in its last three SEC games. The stage appears to be set for the Vols to run the table and finish with an 8-4 record in Kiffin's first year. And the 2010 recruiting class may wind up in the Top 5 nationally by the time the ink has dried on the letters of intent come February.
The foundation has been laid, and no amount of rival fans' squawking and calls for Kiffin to be suspended can undo it." |

just a little combo breaker to keep jaybee from posting his 7th post in a row.
ya know, maybe that means you're the only one who cares about Tennessee football? 11/7/2009 8:52:15 PM |

finally found the joke that Tommy West told about Kiffin:
Quote : | ""A friend of mine was in Knoxville," said West. The friend wanted to find Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin's house. When he finally found it, he saw a sign in the front yard: "Talking dog for sale." The friend saw a Lab, sitting there. "You the talking dog?" "Yep," the dog said. "What's your story?" the friend asked, and the dog told his tale. He'd been talking all his life. He once worked for the CIA. After a while, he got tired of that and took a job in security at the Knoxville airport and -- it was about this exact moment that Kiffin showed up. "You really selling the dog?" West's friend asked the Vols coach. "Yes," said Kiffin. "Five bucks." "Five bucks? Why would you sell a dog like that for five bucks?" "He's a liar!" Kiffin said. "He didn't do any of that stuff!"" |
was actually a better joke than I was expecting but I still dont get it having anything to do with Kiffin...11/8/2009 2:54:26 AM |

Quote : | "If you can't remember seeing a better half of football by a Tennessee quarterback than you saw Saturday night, well, you're right.
Jonathan Crompton's 305 passing yards in the first half of a 56-28 win over Memphis were unsurpassed.
The previous UT mark for a half was 285 yards by - naturally - Peyton Manning, in a Citrus Bowl win over Northwestern on Jan. 1, 1997.
"He really missed one throw in the game,'' head coach Lane Kiffin said Sunday night. "Other than that, he played almost perfect.''
Ready for another surprising stat?
After five touchdown passes against Memphis, Crompton has 21 on the season. Only three quarterbacks nationally have more.
Case Keenum of Houston has 28, Kellen Moore of Boise State 27 and Russell Wilson of N.C. State 24.
Crompton is among a handful of quarterbacks with 21. He has done so in 264 pass attempts, compared to 458 for Keenum, 268 for Moore and 293 for Wilson.
Over the past four games, Crompton has thrown 14 TD passes and only two interceptions. That compares to seven TDs and eight interceptions in the first four games." |

Just got a commitment from OL Juwaun James+
On the Hoof: Has excellent height with long arms and a wide powerbase. James has plenty of room to fill out and add weight and strength in the upper body. His frame will easily hold 320 pounds. James should physically remind fans of Florida State offensive tackle Zebrie Sanders. Needs improvement: Right now, he is a bit light in the pants and lacks pop. He must add some upper body strength and fill out. James must become more physical while run blocking. Right now he relies on athleticism and finesse. Most impressive: This potential giant has excellent lateral movement and looks like a basketball player playing defense. He also has tremendous growth potential and a long wing span which make him an ideal left offensive tackle at the next level. Conclusion: Currently, he is very raw and is possibly two years away from any meaningful time at the next level. He does possess a lot of potential and natural ability and his long-term future is very bright. Look for him to be a two- to three-year starter with NFL potential. 11/10/2009 9:09:43 PM |

^Yeah, they're gone. I mean, they pulled a "gun" on the people at the gas station. The ONLY one who even has a remote chance of sticking around would be Janzen Jackson (1. Because he's the most talented of them all AND 2. Because apparently he didn't approach the car and wasn't as involved).
Well, maybe they can use their redshirts during their year(s) in prison... I kid, I kid............kind of. 11/12/2009 10:34:40 AM |

Eh, who cares... this is the SEC. Let 'em play.
And does this not happen at UT like every two years? I remember something a few years ago similar. Or am I just hoping for trolling purposes?
