The movie was awesome, no question about it.
James Cameron is also awesome.

yes and unlike books movies can NEVER be archetypal. 4/28/2010 2:47:03 PM |

I don't need to watch the movie. I read the plot summary on Wikipedia. Sounds like everyone got it rights. Its Ferngully/Pocahontas in Space. All effects, no story.
PS* Sadly enough I re-watched TRON this weekend. It seems like it was actually the same deal. The plot was really weak, but the effects were great. Hopefully, they find a more balanced mix in TRON Legacy. 4/28/2010 2:48:36 PM |

haha and ALL THERE IS to a movie is the plot. no. Think of it like a musical. The plot is not the biggest factor. It's the music/effects/lighting/sound etc. I don't think the plot was horrible and there was defiantly a story. It's a great archetypal plot that's been used before (books do this all the time). Almost all books and movies reuse some type of archetype. It's not a bad thing.
I mean is the Ferngully/Pocahontas a BAD plot? Is that what you're criticizing? Was it completely unenjoyably because it wasn't a 100% original plot? If the only reason you're disgusted by the plot is because it's been used before then that's no reason to dislike a movie. If no one read novels that reused certain plot structures books would not be around any more.
It's sad when people's only criticism of a movie is, "oh that's one of the oldest archetypes out there." The majority of people enjoyed the movie, enjoyed watching the effects, were satisfied with the plot, had some good messages, and left happy. Not to mention it's gotten overall favorable reviews from most sources.
If you didn't like it find something a little more interesting to criticize.4/28/2010 3:00:14 PM |

It is a movie I'm glad I saw in Imax for the experience, but one I won't buy and likely won't ever see again. 4/28/2010 3:04:18 PM |

this is why you're an idiot...you'd have a point if you said it was too bad that he doesn't "believe" in ORIGINAL plotlines, but the plot of avatar has occurred, is occurring, and will occur many times in human history
it's good because it's thought- and emotion-provoking for most people...i can understand if you were bored because it wasn't original, though
but let's be honest...there are very few original AND good plots these days4/28/2010 3:11:08 PM |

There are plenty of good and original plots these days. Read a book.
If you would rather, the plot itself is 'tried and true'. His rendition of it was uninspired, boring, preachy (to some and not others, lets not get into that again), and run of the mill.
He basically spent 500 million developing new technology (which was breathtaking) and about 19.99 on a plot. 4/28/2010 3:14:49 PM |

The only movie I've seen that wasn't based on actual events that had an ORIGINAL plot line was Arlington Rd.
for once, the bad guys won in a movie.
every other move either has the same plot line as most movies, has some sort of plot twist but ends the same as all other movies. Does this make them bad movies? no...they're still very entertaining. After all thats why I spend money on movies.

A friend brought the DVD over the other day, so I finally got around to watching it. Not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.
I did have one question, maybe it's already been covered... What's up with the waterfalls on those floating mountains. I was somehow able to suspend disbelief for the actual floating mountain bit, but I had to wonder where all that water was coming from, it was just constantly streaming down. I was fully expecting it to be raining constantly on top of those things, but it wasn't. I'd expect there to be some short-lived waterfalls after a rain, but not a non-stop perpetual waterfall. Maybe the mountains were covered in some off camera snow... or there were natural springs inside the mountains. 5/3/2010 1:48:34 PM |

Maybe the connected vines act as a natural pumping system.
Seems pretty unlikely and ridiculous, but that's the only explanation I can think of. I thought the same thing when I saw the mountains. 5/3/2010 1:57:59 PM |

Yeah i mean i've seen some pretty heavy streams coming down off mountains while hiking in the Scottish highlands. I think it's a combination of melting snow and general rain/humidity. It's possible there was just so much humidity and rain at the top.
I mean yeah aside from the fact that the mountains were floating, where does the water come from? lol5/3/2010 2:01:42 PM |

Plot and story sucked and was predictable.
The 3D was top notch though.
With that said I will never watch this movie again outside of IMAX 3D (and once is enough). 5/3/2010 2:05:02 PM |
