I have determined that it is impossible to listen to an album by The National one time and decide if you like it.

Fact.

That being said..... nothing wowed me. It's enjoyable, and I'm sure it'll grow, but nothing wowed me.

I was more pleased with it than my first listen to the new Broken Social Scene. I can honestly say I'll likely never listen to that record again. What a tremendous waste of time that was.

the only National song I really like is that one on Dark Was The Night

the problem with that BSS is that it doesn't sound fresh at all. seems like something they could have recorded in their sleep.

I really can't stand the the lyrics to "Water In Hell"

mainly because of the "it's the year 2010" line

[Edited on April 20, 2010 at 10:02 PM. Reason : and you are dead-on about it not sounding fresh]

agreed about the bss

there's a few tracks ive skipped on every listen

i dont get what the big deal about the national is

however, their live show has really picked up recently

saw them open for arcade fire in... 2006 or 2007, then at a small stage during festival the same year

then on a main stage at a festival last year

seemed like damn near the damn set list all three shows, but they really came into their own as performers. it's miles ahead of where they were the first time i saw them.

however, i havent listened to the new album yet, but i find it hard to not be bored with their music.

i'm just not excited by it.

the crystal castles however makes my panties moist.

It took me a long time to get into The National. I definitely get the argument that their albums can be snoozers. They're not always the most exciting band in the studio but they're 1000% solid, they don't make any bad music. Not the greatest band by any means, but one that makes some top shelf stuff every time.

[Edited on April 20, 2010 at 11:13 PM. Reason : and yeah, that Crystal Castles album is FUCKING BONKERS]

I don't think the new BSS is all bad. I think there are some good ideas, I think it's just inconsistent and really drags towards the end. The first 5 tracks are pretty damn good (save for, maybe, "Forced to Love") and I think "Ungrateful Little Father" and "Meet Me in the Basement" are pretty solid, but after that, it gets pretty mediocre. Overall, I wouldn't call the record BAD, but decent. Still a disappointment considering it's their first album as Broken Social Scene in 5 or so years, though.

i felt exactly the same way about doe deer at first (even posted so here), but it has grown on me with each listen. i am curious though what other songs you think sound like utter shit on this album? it's really really solid from top to bottom and like other people have said, the louder the album is played, the better it sounds.

The New Pornographers' Together is on what. I haven't been into this band for about 4 years, but the new one, surprisingly, isn't half-bad.

I love noise, I just don't enjoy electronics as much. Crystal Castles puts me in a weird mood, and yeah, just not a fan.

If anyone likes dirty lo-fi, Fungi Girls came out with a couple new songs a while ago.

I also suggest their full album hxxp://www.mediafire.com/?zgmzotwloke

Crystal Roads is an awesome song.

New Band of Horses leaked. It's REALLY poppy. Hipsters will renounce them (the few that haven't already) and their fans will likely be pissed...but I kind of like it. That said, I have a higher tolerance for really cheesy pop music than most. I'm not really nuts about their first two records, but I kinda like this one.

The new Minus the Bear is dope. It took me a few listens to get into the first song 'My Time', but after that I listened to the rest of the album which is even better.

They are playing Fillmore with another one of my fav bands Young the Giant (formerly the jakes). So bummed that I'm not gonna be able to make it.

i listened to a bit of the stream the night I posted that link and I liked what I heard. It felt like a slight lack of the guitar noodling that I love from them and a lot of synth but I'll see what I think when I hear the full thing.

When you put out a new record, it would be the new The New New Pornographers record. Has a rhythm to it. That would be fun. You could name your band The New New Record, and then it would be the new The New New Record record. ABABBCC.

But, there would inevitably be a cover band called The Knew New Pornographers. Then things would get really confusing.

I'm loving the new Future Islands, but i still like Wave Like Home better i think. Its more synthpoppy. But the new has more growing potential maybe.

new Crystal Castles is good, but i like the old CD better, too, i think. perhaps i'm getting crotchety.

I also like the new Foals.

checking out the new minus the bear and the new the national now.

Just starting my second playthrough of the new Flying Lotus album. Genuinely good stuff on here. Each track has a completely different sound, at least when played in order. Jazz, ambient, trip-hop, r&b all up in this bitch.

just finished listening to the new band of horses, and i gotta say, I really like it. i loved their first album, was mediocre on the second one. as others are saying, this one is pretty poppy and i could do with a few more rockers, but after the first listen, i can honestly proclaim it to be a great summer record
