So I'm brainstorming PDF workarounds for the coworker

D any of the remote access programs work so that if he needed to he could simply remote access his desktop and screen share it there? Any recommendations for RDP program?

Lumia 920 get. What the everloving fuck Microsoft? I can't play videos I've paid for and downloaded from Xbox on my phone? You have to be fucking kidding me. And syncing music is fucking retarded. I don't want everything to be streaming, I want the shit on my phone. I've had to turn off the cloud sync, manually drag shit to the phone, let it error through it all once and have no way to add playlists.

I mean, it's a nice big pretty screen and the nokia apps are awesome but shit they took some steps backwards with media playback. Maybe I can just convert these video files or capture them or something.

^yeah the Xbox video thing is a major fuckup, lots of people complaining about that. I just cancelled my Xbox music pass after years of membership. They fucked me over so many time the past year I finally got fed up.

still love the 920, even more so now that I'm not using Xbox video or music

How do you get music onto WP8 and get album art and everything to transfer?

I just used the metro windows phone app and dragged songs to it. It appeared to automatically get the album covers after a while.

I take that back, tracks from ripped cds aren't giving me album covers unless the album is also on the Store (which they aren't which is why I asked for the goddamned cds for X-Mas.

I went to the dark side and deleted all the shit I copied over to the phone and the sync'd with the cloud. I then told the phone to download all the songs. I *think* this is what MS intended. It's still cumbersome and stupid and doesn't work with videos.

For ripped CD album covers I got the jpgs, renamed them folder.jpg and put them in the same folder as the tracks on the phone in Windows Explorer. Not sure that'll work for phones other than Nokias though. And it still puts a giant gray box on my lock screen because it can't download the artist info from Xbox Music (though this might be specific to Tool since they don't even exist as an artist on the Store).

In case anyone cares, the wireless charging of the Lumia 920 works perfectly fine through a heavy case like the Otterbox Defender.

So I can hand it to my 4 year old and not worry too much. Also I didn't mind having it this weekend when I'm grappling with my 1 year old getting is hair cut and water and hair spraying all over it. (phone was to play a video to try to immobilize him)

I popped my SIM in one of our test Lumia 820s (out of iPhone 4s) for the weekend and si far I've been impressed - I'm still only a few hours in but I love the live tiles - haven't used it enough to know about battery life but in the back if my head it's a concern

only complaints are that you can't change the color of individual tiles and when downloading maps for offline it wouldn't let me leave the screen until the download was complete

I find it interesting that the only problem I have typing is that the keyboard layout is slightly different and my fingers seem to be trained to be slightly off - autocorrect is working great though

^dont install the Skype preview and turn off background process for Nokia drive. You'll get 20+ hours of heavy usage.

My 920 went from 5hours on a charge to 24+ hours. Removed Skype, turn off Nokia drive background, turned on battery saver and put it through a few days charge cycles. I can get two days without charging now, but with the wireless pad, its much harder to forget.

Huh, I have Nokia Drive enabled and Skype and I make it all day on a half charge. That's usually with playing some games and watching a few videos in addition to obsessively checking Baconit (reddit app) and maybe pulling up a map or two, but yeah, just dropping it on the charging pad at night is the tits.

I've moved from the Samsung Focus to the 920 this evening and so far so good. I wasn't really impressed with the transfer of the contacts. I had everything nice and grouped with the Focus and when I moved it over everything became ungrouped. It might have been PBKAC issue though, I really didn't do too much research into the whole thing.

So far it's faster than the Focus and my signal is a little better here in the basement of work. I know from my wife's phone I don't like the software you have to use with it when you connect to a PC. Zune was a much better interface with the phone.

How much do you want to bet that BB10 gets an Instagram client before WP8?

none of these garbage distros are going anywhere. no one is gaining any major market share without something compelling on the corporate side, app support, and/or a new UI paradigm that manages to make phone use more efficient. you need 2/3 to stay alive, 3/3 to matter. windows phone has 1/3 (UI).

the best part is WP7 having a later eol date than WP8

its a shame MS didn't support this and leverage their size, it really is the best UI. there just aren't any apps for it, a big barrier to develop apps for it, and no commitment from MS to make it better

(the good news is that android is starting to not look as terrible and there are rumors that the next iOS will actually be something new)

not even close. removal of AD management in wp7 that windows mobile 6.5 previously had was extremely damaging, then adding back a similar capability but offering it in parity for ios devices offers no advantage to a wp8 endpoint. the only real enforceable policies are controlled through active-sync and those apply to all devices that support the protocol.

previous gen blackberry and winmo 6.5 and below have left such a gap in management of new and desirable devices that I have tons of customers who have ios stigs because the device has so much market share. https://www.good.com:4663/news/press-releases/110727.php

nothing like that in the current ms ecosystem. corp IT has just given up on mobile management for the most part, relying on active sync policy to secure data or investing in these hardened products with intended public sector audiences.

Saw on a tech blog that WP8 finally has Pandora (and apparently its better on WP8 than iOS and Android). I thought that was one of the big apps they had for launch? I'm kinda jealous of unlimited listening for WP8 users.

^^ access management for one. A persistent identity to push settings on a per user basis across any devices they may own is supported via activesync, but pushing security policies, applications, and settings beyond the basic lock password. you can also use this identity for access to files with windows ACLs.

Thats exactly what Windows Intune and System Center Configuration Manager do. On Windows Phone 8. Which works with Active Directory.

^ look through that yourself. 1, doesn't integrate identity/access management and 2, doesn't look to have implemented any actual policies different from active sync. no where on ms's site does it show anything about actual management tools, just the hooks to be able to manage something and how to enroll devices to be managed.

^^^ You're completely wrong. You can enable SSO through your company Active Directory for most platforms now. You can ALSO use ActiveSync, but it's not required, and they are not mutually exclusive.

Go try the intune trial for "actual management tools"
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windowsintune/try.aspx
Or install System Center Configuration Manager for even deeper "actual management tools"
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj884158.aspx

Here's the differences between ActiveSync and Direct Management setup:
http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj662631.aspx

and here's the capability breakdown list of each (which, again, you can use AD through ActiveSync as well as directly through SSO with Azure Active Directory.

I think I'm done with Windows Phone after this cycle. Had to get a refurb because my lumia stopped charging wirelessly. Now I can't get my Music Pass music back on it because of some server error with Xbox Music.

Is there anything on Android that's comparable to Xbox Music Pass? A subscription based service that has essentially anything I want that I can download to the phone so it's not streaming it all the time? Or do I have to buy individual mp3s?
