Yes, only 20 minutes away if you drive through the completely inconvenient carcass of a city that is urban Atlanta. I hope they took a different route!

I'm sure you can find a way around and not have the "2 hour" travel time to some unknown army base or whatever they were calling it. They've clearly indicated that vehicle travel isn't impossible around the city, just fuel could be difficult to obtain.
Oh and my comment before hand has been done if anyone wondered...
There's more memorable characters from this movie even though it's only 101 minutes long.

^^^^ i live in Atlanta - pretty easy to make it from where they camped to the CDC in 30 minutes or so. the scene made it look like the CDC is a bit outside the city - it's actually only about 5 miles from downtown, so not really much farther than the trip they were making in/out to get Merle.
also, that route on the map you've posted has them going down Bankhead Highway - pretty sure I'm not driving through there with a low tank of gas, zombies or no
I really enjoyed the episode, looking forward to season 2. my only beef was with the whole "fossil fuels" thing - first of all, don't need some politcal commentary on our dependence on fossil fuels randomly thrown in. Secondly, I'd have to imagine the CDC at this point has some sort of solar power capabilities built in. It's on a nice, sunny hill - guarantee there's some sort of solar backup there, not just fuel oil drums... 12/10/2010 9:47:07 AM |

Yeah, but 20 mins doesn't = 2 hours and if you have enough fuel to drive 2 hours, you have enough fuel to go 20 mins. As someone else said, there's a shit ton of ways to get there, Shit 75 to 85 is probably easy and we know that the inbound lanes aren't blocked.

No, and I can think of several reasons why this might be the case:
1) It's difficult to set a person on fire without some sort of starter fuel. You'd have to douse them gas or kerosene, or use a decent amount of wood. 2) Ask the Germans: even when you have purpose-built equipment for burning people, the smell is horrible and pervasive, and the particles it produces tend to jam up chimneys (or, in your scenario, whatever exhaust system you have) 3) Speaking of particles, you want to risk the zombie pathogen getting put into the air like that? 4) You probably want to minimize the amount of zombie-handling you do, even if they are dead (again). Too much chance for contamination.
All in all, impractical, inefficient, and unsafe.12/16/2010 12:08:23 AM |

FEEL ME?
ok, since the zombies are attracted to noise and live non-undead flesh, just back up a semi-truck with a box-style trailer, open the back door and let down a ramp for them to walk up. put a rabbit in a cage in there, have a speaker in the back to make noise, and when they board the trailer for the feast, close it up. then obviously leave there, and have the box flown out to sea or over top of a volcano, empty the box in either or just drop the entire box in either and be done with it.
rinse repeat.

you plan sucks, one, zombies can walk underwater and two, there's not a lot of active volcanoes to logistically do this. That being said, a zombie trap would be cool, but honestly, a pipe bomb with a noise maker on it like in L4D is probably gonna be easier since it's a small device and it can take them out pretty easily.

I just got done reading the comics. How does the show stack up? Does the show have it snowing regularly on the outskirts of Atlanta?
WD specific question... it's been well over a year. You would think that most people would have gotten infected early on, so I guess zombies don't need anything to survive. In other words, it seems like the zombie population would be thin after so long. Where all the original zombies eventually rot to the point where they can't do anything.
General zombie questions: Zombies devour their victims, seems like that would severely halt the spread of the infection. You'd only turn if you were attacked by a slow grazer, and then what - it would stop eating you the instant you turn. Which brings me to my other question.
Why don't zombies eat each other. Especially in 28 days later. An infection that makes you ultra violent. You'd think two people infected with rage would just go off on each other, but they only go after the one non-infected person in a crowd.
First world problems.

You're obviously missing a pivotal piece of info on how zombies are generated in the comics. 2/2/2011 1:44:28 PM |
Pikey All American 6421 Posts user info edit post |
1) I have always wondered myself what was sustaining these zombies.
2) People that die (in the comics) turn into zombies whether they were bitten or not. So it must be some kind of dormant virus. That is why the CDC guy was testing them upon entry to the facility.
3) Goddamnit. 28 Days Laters is NOT a zombie movie. It is a medical horror/drama. 2/2/2011 1:50:54 PM |
jbtilley All American 12797 Posts user info edit post |
2) Yeah, I guess so. I would have thought that the majority of deaths would have come at the hand of a zombie - which would then try to devour a potential plague spreader. Maybe there were massive stampede/looting deaths.
3) Ok, it's a medical horror/drama. Why wouldn't people infected with uncontrolled rage wail on each other? Hell, if video games have taught me anything people with unchecked rage would probably do themselves in before they got to anyone else.

^The only real rule is how the zombies can be killed. Traditional zombies are already dead and can only be 'killed' by taking off the head or damaging the brain... in 28 Days Later they are still living/breathing humans, so they can be killed in any way that a human can be killed. I guess since they are still alive they could be "cured" too since it is just a virus. 2/2/2011 3:04:23 PM |

"Destroy the brain" is the only functional difference, and I don't think it's a big enough one to warrant him having a shit-fit about it being a "medical horror/drama," which isn't even a thing. 2/2/2011 4:06:41 PM |

^ I agree.
28 Days Later is most definitely a zombie film. Variation in zombie myth exists the same as it does within vampire myth. Stop trying to rename genres.
Zombies fact variations: Become one from a bite. Become one from dying and coming back to life. Become one some sort of man made virus. etc.
Vampire fact variations: Some vampires remain the same age forever. (Dracula, Anne Rice books, etc) Some vampires age. (Let the right one in [+others i can't think of off the top of my head]) Some vampires are pale. Some are are black, do steroids and kill their fellow blood drinkers. (Blade himself) Some are killed by sunlight. Some are glitter and crave cock when they expose themselves to sunlight. (anything written in the Twilight books) 2/2/2011 4:23:14 PM |

yeah, 28 Days is definitely a zombie movie imo simply because they're infected with something and then become very different. Driven to kill "non-infected" people. I'm curious as to what Danny Boyle says.
^ vampires didn't age in Let the Right One In, at least not in either of the movie versions (maybe in the book?).

To be a ZOMBIE, you have to die and be reanimated. This is what happens in TWD, albeit they never say why. Might be a virus, might not. But they die as a human.
In 28 Days Later, they were just infected by a rage virus. They didn't die first. And when they did die, they did not reanimate. Zombies are dead people. Rage virus victims are just infected with a sickness, but they are still living breathing humans. 2/3/2011 1:29:17 PM |

This is a nice little pissing contest we have going on here...
So what about resident evil "zombies"?
From the resident evil wiki:
Quote : | "Should the human host be alive at the time of t-virus infection, all higher brain functions are destroyed. This leaves only the cerebellum to govern behaviour. This leaves the infected host with a very animalistic behaviour. As the virus spreads, it damages the hypothalamus. This produces a massive flood of neurotransmitters, enzymes, and hormones such as norepinephrine and dopamine. These effects, combined with the painful symptoms of the infection, induce a psychotic rage, persistent hunger, and increased aggressiveness in those infected.
Should the human host be dead at the time of infection, only enough energy is produced to power the lower brain functions. These functions are responsible for the most primal instincts, such as walking and eating.
In either case, their late-stage appearance and behaviour are characteristics of their name-sake, a zombie.
Should a late-stage human host be rendered unconscious, the body will lay in a dormant phase appearing to be dead. In actuality the host is rapidly mutating due to the t-virus becoming hyperactive. Within the time frame of an hour, the decayed skeletal and muscular system is reconstructed into a stronger and more durable form. Development can be seen of sharp canine teeth and razor claws, fresh blood seeps into remaining skin giving it a reddish hue, advances in decomposition, and intact eyes become a bright white. " |
As far as I'm concerned, there is no "official" definition for "zombie" seeing as it has been bastardised and re-invented countless times. I think all of us would pretty much recognise a zombie apocalypse if we saw one though, and 28 days later is close enough for me.
And quit using the Z word2/3/2011 1:50:55 PM |

As far as I'm concerned, if what once was human is now no longer able to control themselves to the point where they mindlessly act violent towards other living things as a result of something highly contagious, they are a zombie -- living or dead. If it really bothers you that much that people call the baddies in 28 Days Later zombies then maybe you shouldn't be so sensitive. 2/3/2011 2:03:16 PM |

It's been awhile since I've seen 28 Days Later, but did they state somewhere in the movie that the infected were still "living humans?" I always assumed that something along the lines of the Resident Evil Wiki article happened (ie the virus killed out all higher brain function) and that they were considered dead/undead.
Either way, would you really have enjoyed the movie any more if they somehow explained that they had all died before they reanimated? 2/3/2011 3:05:07 PM |
