I literally cannot think of a more horrible indictment of this country than if this festering turd of an administration is able to sell war with Iran.

-Most of us, including even quite a few pro-trump people, know that this administration is full of liars
-They are using nearly the exact same playbook as GWB. The arguments are almost the same (this will be an easy war to win, fake evidence/intelligence, etc)
-exact same newspapers are unquestioningly running the exact same propoganda
-Its only been 15 fucking years. Its amazing how short the average persons memory is
-You don't have to be some hippie to realize that the Iraq war wasted epic numbers of lives and money, and has gained the US almost nothing. Its turned into a 15 year lost cause.

But none of that matters, Bolton, Pompeo, and Trump are still gonna take us right up to the edge (and I pray to god no further) because this country is a god damn dumpster fire.

US released a video of Iran removing an unexploded limpet mine as evidence that Iran is responsible for the attack.

I can't understand any motive for Tehran to do this, what sense does it make for Iran to attack a Japanese flagged ship, one of their trading partners, while Shinzo Abe is in Iran? how would that benefit iran? I understand that there is conflict between the IRGC and Rouhani, but an attack while Abe is meeting with Khamenei seems like it would undermine Khamenei and not Rouhani.

Thoughts? I could maybe see an argument for someone like Saudi Arabia wanting to instigate things, but am having trouble understanding why Iran would want to.

Spitballing:

Fucking up the global oil supply does two things for Iran

-Higher oil prices, even by a few dollars, will help them get their budget under control. Iranian debt has gone from like 10% of GDP to more like 50% of GDP in just the last 5 years. Oil revenues make up like 80% of their national budget.

-more volatility in oil prices puts the rest of the oil consuming world on notice, if you sanction us again there's a chance its gonna hurt your economy too.


All that being said, I too, do not believe a god damn word Pompeo says (for multiple reasons). As you pointed out, there are plenty of amoral bad actors in that region that have just as many reasons to do this shit.

Yes, but:

-Iran is still selling on "grey markets." (I have no idea how much Oil is actually sold this way. Iran suggests its significant)
-China, while officially complying with US sanctions, is allegedly still buying from Iran (conflicting reports here, believe what you want).
-You shouldn't dismiss the possibility that Iran has made the judgement that trying to re-enter global markets and lifting sanctions just isn't going to be possible with irrational, bad-faith leaders running the US. Does anyone think there is actually something Iran could do/negotiate that would appease Trump, Bolton, or Pompeo??? Normalizing relations with someone that has an almost religious fervor to start a war with you just isn't gonna be possible and I think Iran gets that, now.


But again, I think the case for responsibility for these tanker bombings/drone strikes/mine attacks is probably stronger for other bad actors in the region.
